Superb. That last 15 minutes was breathtaking

Showed the importance of getting the pacing spot on.

The atmosphere was absolutely superb there today. Guessing there was no more than a 1000 people there. Can only imagine what it will be like in June especially as he gets close to the record...

Dowsett has said he didn't like the plan, which was to match Dennis for 30 minutes and only let him loose for the last 5 minutes. He says he knew he was going to break the record after 30 minutes as he felt good and had to be continually told to slow down.

He certainly seemed fresh after he finished when you look how broken some of the others have been. Must have been slightly frustrating being less than 70m away from breaking 53km though.

    There's an interesting strategic decision.
Do you aim to ride as far as you can in an hour or aim to break the record?

It seems pretty clear the plan was to break the record, but Dowsett seems to think he could have done more. From Cycling Weekly:

"We had a plan, which I didn’t like. That was to equal Rohan Dennis’s record up to 45 minutes. I wanted to do more, but I had to have faith in the coaches. I was continually being slowed down to the pace. The idea was that I could be let loose only in the last five minutes. But I knew at ten minutes that I had it in me, so I pressed on."

Was that when he knew he was going to do it?

“No, it was at half-an-hour, when I pulled in front of Rohan’s record, I felt I had a lot left. I knew at that point that I was going to break the record.”

The last ten minutes of the ride, when he “let loose”, sent the crowd into a sustained roar of approval. Riding each lap at over 54 kph by that point, he was edging closer and closer to breaking the 53km barrier. In the end, of course, he didn’t quite get there.

Yeah, that 70m is a bit annoying, because it was in there,” he said.

So would he have another go? “I don’t see why I wouldn’t want to do it again sometime. I enjoyed it today. This is what cycling is about, for me, the noise of the crowd in the last 10 minutes was huge.”

And with a reference to the date of Bradley Wiggins’s planned Hour attempt, he added, “Maybe I’ll have another go after the June 7.”

He picked a bad day for drawing a crowd - there was a few hundred thousand on the roads of Yorkshire.

By the sounds of it he could have gone quite a bit further. I still expect Wiggins to smash it though.

I get the impression Dowsett's attempt will be one of a few, if Wiggo beats it, he'll be back. Great news for cycling, hopefully we could have a Coe / Ovett rivallry!

Really brilliant day at the velodrome watching dowsett atmosphere was really loud and for louder when he started picking up pace and the screen showing he was getting faster, than when the time when to minus it was electric

Not sure there's any chance of an Obree v Boardman style rivalry. More likely that Wiggins will make just one attempt before he switches focus to Rio...and retirement.

Bit of a strange time of day, as well - presumably there's a reason for it, but I would have thought that if you want to draw a crowd you'd make an evening of it?

Great photos! Love the one of him and Phil (His Dad) If Wiggo beats it (And he probably will if he isn't in CBA mode) then I look forward to seeing him have another go. His crash kind of helped him in a way as it gave him time to watch some "How not to" attempts.

It's a shame he couldn't do it at Lee Valley but from what I understand they are a bit of a pain in the a$$.

I sometimes wonder if they actually want to have any racing there, I'm fully accredited now but I have to wait until July before I can do my first race!

Wiggo speaking like he's already got the record in the bag...

.. Ok so his schdule will probably be north of 53km but he's still got to ride the thing before saying he hopes that people are willing to have a crack after his attempt!

the interesting thing after the succession of "that was the worst thing to do ever...never again" attempts, is he actually sounds like he enjoyed it :)

obviously having the TT experience, and his bike setup next to near perfect setup for him helped, but yeah I get the feeling he will be back for another go.
