Aggresive Hardtail Thread!

Finally took my meta out to do some proper riding and boy it is good to be back on a hardtail i'm not really sure why but i think it is the rawness of riding, no rear suspension to help so you feel everything and when you're thundering down a hill you're always on the edge. The x-fusion velvet forks are excellent.

Steel can be either springy or stiff, just like any other material. It's all down to how you use it. As for it being outdated, steel has progressed on massively in the last couple of years. It has gotten stronger, there has been air hardening steel, even stainless steel tubing coming on to the market for cycle frames. I suspect that you don't see much of it around because it is easier and cheaper to mass produce a hardtail frame from aluminium in the far east.0 -

Maybe the best looking alu frame and top spec for their price!!!
What ever the fork you have, will fit with the appropriate headset.
I'd go Bird too. Had mine since the end of the summer and it's great. Great service from Ben and the boys and girls too.0 -
@petridet right choice binning the tektro brakes, had them on my ghost (different model though) and sucked. Weak, leaky, and only gave you the chance twice, then nothing
@RevellRider, well it is outdated as not many mass produce steel frames for mtbing, I meant marketing wise outdated. We all know a good bike is about the whole and one factor doesn't guarantee a winner.
Bad 29ers
Bad carbon frames
Unrideable alu frames
and harsh steel rides,
Well you get the point....“I am a humanist, which means, in part, that I have tried to behave decently without expectations of rewards or punishments after I am dead.”

why? because you own one?“I am a humanist, which means, in part, that I have tried to behave decently without expectations of rewards or punishments after I am dead.”

This isn't the most aggressive hardtail, but it's mine  so far it's had a new set of forks Rockshox Reba RL twin air (due to bending the top brace). new wheel set, new chain & rear cassette, Rockshox dropper seat post, currently tubeless, spd's
I've looked at buying a FS but I don't think I really need one, This year I'm going to replace the BB, go 1x10 or 1x11 with a wide rear cassette. and may update the master brake coupled with a rear gear shifter.I'm not a racer, but I like to churn out 2-3hr rides,
I love Cannock and Llandegla cycle parks.
Cube Acid 2010
Upgraded RockShox Reba RL Forks, twin air.
Updrade RockShox dropper seat post.
Went tubeless DIY style using a 20" BMX tube. Lasting well.0 -

My finished Shan - well, almost.
Need to change the grips for something more co-ordinated; trim down the dropper seatpost cable, and switch the Easton wheels over to my Stans Arch Ex which arrived after the initial build.

SLX brakes 203/160
Arch ex on hope pro 2 with Hans dampf tubeless
Finished today and as yet unridden. I've only ever had a 120mm rockshox recon prior to this so should be interesting. I'll see how I feel at 130mm for most riding with 160 as an option for big lake district descents, but the fork can be adjusted to somewhere in between if necessary.
Planned upgrades include new, lighter bar/stem once I've know what riding position I want. New crankset as ruktion cranks and bb weigh a ton. New saddle as the scoop is pretty hard. Reverb eventually.0 -

Sorry about the crappy Iphone image.
Here my Dirty Bird Zero. Now with Zee Brakes, XT cranks, New saddle (how do you boys live with Charge Saddles) superstar Silicone grips which I love! Forks set up properly now its an absolute rocket ship both up and down hill. Next up I have a zee rear mech which i will fit with a Rad-R cage. Maybe some slightly narrower bars the Atlas 780's feel to wide for me.

glasuni03 wrote:Thanks for that. I will have a look at the Bird Zero. What size of frame? Are they big made for sizing? I have already bought the Rockshox Revelation RL 150mm and would this fork be compatible?
Looks like the Bird's are getting more and more popular.....here's mine;
I ordered it with the Revelation forks as shown but had a few issues with a blown seal. Ben was great at sorting this out for me and it's now upgraded to Pike on the front.....I'm loving it . Mine's a medium and just right for me at 5'8".
Mark0 -
Mines a medium at 5'9. It feels a little short as i am very long in the body. I actually wish i had ordered a large. I have plenty of seat post out on the medium. I will take some better pics of mine when I finish it off. Few more tweeks needed0
-
Three's a charm!
Another medium at 5'9. If it were my all year bike then I would have gone up to a large but I preferring the smaller sizing for chucking about in the Winter conditions. I often forget there is no rear travel throwing it downhill at times as it goes so well.Bird Aeris : Trek Remedy 9.9 29er : Trek Procaliber 9.8 SL0 -
Realised a few months ago that I basically had a whole bike's worth of spares, so figured it'd be silly not to have an extra bike. You know, for emergencies and such. Ended up with an old Mmmbop frame, which I'm actually quite pleased with. The old Pike is being treated to some fancier dual-flow internals, and I just picked up a -2 degree headset from Works' seconds sale too. No real plan for it, just wanted to play about with something resembling the geo of a BTR Ranger.

The Sov is still here and well-loved. Not much updated apart from a Hope TRex, F20 pedals and a taco bash. This was last week (the Mmmbop pic is actually only 2 days later):
