Definitley not an upgrade I'm going to be buying :?

In other news, what time will Froome be likely to be finishing? Before 5? They could at least have set the last few off between 5-6 so I could watch on the train

What's the 'science' behind the conventional wisdom that top climbers should be unable to compete with TT specialists?

Obviously going uphill steep enough for long enough, W/Kg is the dominant factor. On a flat TT, raw power and aerodynamics dominate. What stops the raw power of the climber being close to that of the TT specialists? (With time gaps down to technique). Martin weighs, according to team sites, 6Kg more than Froome. Is it as simple as the extra 6Kg of presumably mainly muscle provide enough power benefit to triumph on the flat, but not enough to overcome the weight tax going uphill?

You could also include the fact that all bikes weigh the same, so a bike is proportionally less weight for larger riders.

I think some power comes from upper body strength which is clearly not as useful going uphill.

    TJ going decently...

Dropped back quite a bit at second check - not the first rider to do this in the last half hour or so (see also Gilbert). I wonder if the wind is having the opposite effect to what was suggested earlier?

Tis interesting that. Slight incline between timecheck 1 & 2, could be a factor?

Weather reports suggest a north easterly, which as suggested should be favourable to the latter part of the course...

Due out at 3:54. Add slightly less than 40 minutes to that, and he should be finishing shortly after 4:30.

 Just before we cut to the break, Porte clocked 62kph on the 'speed check' thing at the side of the road!

Here's a similar question - why are some rouleurs great time triallists and others not? Why is Cancellara one of the greatest we have seen, but Boonen rarely achieves anything against the clock (the occasional prologue aside)? He's big, powerful, has been known to attack from range (P-R 2012) - is it a matter of aerodynamics / willingness to focus on the discipline?

Cav's Team manager just been on saying a spectator has thrown a cup of urine at Cav in the closing KM's of the TT.

And no Sven Nys-esque dismount to calmly remonstrate with the culprit?

Titchy Richie's necklace doesn't look very aero.

Perhaps him being so small negates any marginal gains from the necklace.

Ah thanks, misheard 7 and 7th on the Dutch commentary.

Anyway he's up to 4th now. Negative split?

The way Contador moves up and down the saddle on his TT bike it'd be like sitting on a belt sander
