Commentator just said they time from 'the 5th wheel over the line'. Surely it's the 5th bike?

    Yeah, 9th wheel surely! :D
Er no. Even though Lichtblick's original comment was possibly a 'joke' - it wasn't a good one. Your comment I'm afraid is just wrong.

The riders usually spread out across the road - so ninth wheel could actually be the rear wheel of the fourth finisher in the team (or various other combinations). Time, as has been said, is taken from the fifth front wheel.

    Top Pedantry that man!

Timed to perfection from Sky. Quick enough to only lose a second, slow enough to not have to wear yellow.
    Does seem just about perfect.

Hmmm, do you think they eased a little on the run in? Hard to tell. Difficult politically as I guess Eddy would have loved to wear yellow but not a good time time for the team to take it.

I'd presume Sky are bloody minded and hard nosed enough not to bother defending it too zealously though?

Fifth rear wheel surely as that's where the transponders are?
Well on a normal road stage it's the front wheel that stops the clock... as evidence by just about every photo finish you've ever seen.

Yes but you couldn't use a light-beam camera/timer to cut when the 5th rider crosses the line on a TTT!? - it would surely have to be 5th transponder across...

Most fun discussion in a TTT ever. [/geek]

I reckon Sky probably posted the best time they possibly could have done. An extra couple of seconds here could make all the difference in Paris and if it all goes wrong later than a TTT stage win and EBH in yellow could turn out to be a consolation prize. Sure they wouldn't give that up on purpose

thats amazing I love it when they do awsome rides with broken bones, it must release some kind of painkiller. that stage a few years ago Pau to Bayonne which was won with livingstone who had a cracked shoulder was amazing too.

The audio change? That was the "race radio" feed or whatever it's supposed to be.

Kirby in tears as the voice on the mic feed's English was awful yet he managed to convey what was happening better than Kirby ... Genius!
