So looks like Astana doing the pace setting role, but looks like Sky might be giving them a run for their money
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.

Doping is more acceptable than wearing those.

I'd have to be pumped full of mind-altering drugs to wear them

I thought I was pumped full of mind altering drugs when I saw them.

I wouldn't like to to be looking at them while pumped full of mind altering drugs

This is going to be a battle of trains. Sky's much derided tactics of last year are going to be adopted by Kazakstan Railways, if they are up to it. Blanco will try the same thing but without success.

Sky have no need to sit on the front and set the pace when Astana are going to do it for them. Why waste energy at this stage when you can shelter behind the opposition. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens on the final climb. Should be exciting - Nibali ought to bury Wiggins today.

From now on up the road is little more than a car's width.

Agree they should just sit in line behind them & make them do the work & burn out their own guys. Put the pressure on the leaders jersey & make the have to decide what to do rather than go to the front & give them an easy ride.

Sky on the front now, setting the pace. Astana behind them. Break down to 7'35". 62 kms to go.

Love these narrow climbs. Looks like Sky is stringing it out. We better see some GC action later.

Ha, great screengrab. Liking the others also.

Based on what? OK, Nibs seems to have stepped up this year and there are question marks over Wiggo's form, but when did Nibs ever put him to the sword in the mountains? One stage in 2009 he made a little time, then recently in Trentino (a lot to do with Wiggo mechanical), on the other hand look at Nibs getting dropped in Vuelta 2011 and Tour last year (including on the steeper stuff).

Presumably because they wanted to ensure they were at the head of the bunch going into the foot of this climb

Based on nothing really Mat, other than today has some incredibly steep sections which I don't think Wiggins is that good at. I want Wiggins to win, but I don't have him down as being a great high mountains rider but then I could be completely wrong.

Sounds like an OK idea, but the roads aren't that tight that they couldn't get past Astana if they wanted to if they were in their wheels making them do the work.

Bradders is looking good - maybe sky want to be on the front for the 2km descent in the middle?

He was the best climber in the mountains in the Tour last year (ok maybe Froome was stronger but we don't know that).. and he's been saying that his climbing form is better than ever coming into the Giro.

Wiggins & 5 Sky controlling the front on the narrow road.

@dnlbenson I can see Nibali extending his lead over Wiggins today but he won't lose Evans & Scarponi will be looking to take some time back
@dnlbenson Nibali might grab seconds on rivals, but expect Wiggins to surprise and go toe to toe with Vincenzo
@dnlbenson Sky need to utilise Henao & Uran to weaken Nibali. If they can isolate him they have options to attack.

Whats new? Cadel never seems to get much in the way of support when it comes to the mountains.

    Nibali puncture.

Or chain issues. Bad place for it.

You could be right, but Nibali seems to have suddenly developed a rep as unquestionably being a better climber which I'm not sure I get. Kerrison keeps saying what great form Wiggins has but I'm not convinced. Today should tell us a lot.

Also if they sit behind astana then astana can control the pace to something they are happy with. This way it's risky but if the sky train can carry this they can possibly shell half of nibali's team. That was the idea last year as everyone in that train could produce the sort of constant power that Sky knew other teams would struggle with.

Hmm Sky continue to set a high tempo. Wonder if Nibali has something to say about that. Depends how long it takes for him to get back. Sky are good at making friends.
