So today's stage kicks off in about an hours time shorter one today at 169kms from Mola di Bari to Margherita di Savoia. Profile is flat so expect it to be an sprinters stage unless we have another pile up in the last 1kms. Though understand that the weather is not meant to be wet like yesterday.

Today is also 2 years since Wouter Weylandt passed away.
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.

Time has passed by so quickly. Thanks for remembering him Dan, he was a great rider.

I love seeing a contested bunch sprint, but for these sort of stages I really wonder what the point is.
Wouldn't it be easier to stick them all on turbos and let them jump on the bikes when they have done 150km?

GCN have done quick flythrough video of todays stage http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... 2Wuawfcb8#!

Suggesting that whilst billed as a sprinters stage is a possibility of side winds as they move up the coast causing some issues, however worth noting that todays stage ends with two laps of 16.3 km in Margherita di Savoia so would expect the sprint trains to keep things under control on the final loop(s)

Why isn't Greipel here? I'm as vexed by this as the absence of Tony Martin. What are these guys aiming at that's more important than the second biggest Grand Tour of the season?

Ah right. Forgot about that one 8) Surely they could compete at their best in both?

Greipel had quite a busy classics campaign so he probably needs a bit of a rest. And he's always done the Tour of Turkey. There's not usually that many sprint stages on offer during the Giro.
And there's not a lot on offer for Martin either, just that one long TT. His energies are better saved for one week races with a major TT.

Ach, it was ever thus. Unless you're Italian, for most riders the Tour is your primary goal for the season. All the riders want to be at their peak at at the Tour, and clearly Greipel thinks the Giro might compromise his winning chances at the Tour. Not sure if Greipel's ridden the Giro since 2010, doesnt seem to have the affinity for him that it has for Cav. Goss usually rides it too. No doubt the Gorilla will pop up at an SSR this month - the mighty Bayern Rundfahrt might be calling...

That's exactly what puzzles me. Greipel would be hot favourite for at least one stage win. Martin, a hotter favourite for the TT, and would make a big difference to the OPQS CavTrain. Why are the sponsors happy enough to give up the chance of worldwide exposure in favour of the Turkish market or wins in the Dauphine? Nuts.

The only times he's done the Giro is when he knew he would miss the Tour (2008) or expected to miss it until his hearing got postponed (2011). Similarly he's only ever done the Vuelta when he's missed the Tour. Given his own way he'd only ever have done the Tour.

They are so sure it's going to be a sprint that nobody could be bothered to get into the break!

FWIW there was a break prior to the 2 Aussies getting away but the peloton brought it back. But safe to say that as the stage has been described as pancake flat or fried egg with a little bum in the middle guess the sprinters teams are not that worried and will try to get it under control and all back together for lead out duties.

If they could manage to avoid a crash in the last 2km it'd be much appreciated

Ah, once again Rai experiencing technical difficulties going live. I wonder whether they'll end up in breach of contract with the RCS?

Has got a 90 degree left just before the finish so who knows if they can keep the rubber on the road today
