Very surprised by that, you'd think that somebody would want to sponsor this race given the popularity of the men's ToB.
This is a bit more upbeat, but I think it has to be taken with a pinch of salt - "we have communicated with ASO" could mean just about anything...

Its hardly the biggest race in the world yet the ToB is still sponsored top to bottom. Yet someone tries to create a womens equivalent of the TdF (in stature, apparently) and they can't find 500, 000...
Somehow I doubt the "London one day Classic" that is being mooted would struggle much, do you? We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

You mean this year's London-Surrey Classic? Think Prudential have committed to sponsoring through to 20160 -

We're used to the old problem of womens sport not getting equal coverage on TV and media, so gets pittance in terms of investment and sponsorship deals...
... but the Women's Tour has ITV4 already signed up, so its a good opportunity for sponsors.
Perhaps they need some big names and teams to state that they will be riding it, and to be involved in the promotion? Edit. But I suppose there are fewer 'household names' in the UK, outside of the track/Wiggle0 -

well if they reckon you can be title sponsor for a UCI continental team for a whole year for 100k (and we know even those are struggling to find the money) asking presumably similar groups or types of companies to come up with 5 times the amount of cash for just one race, Im not that surprised they havent found anyone to cover it yet.0 -

Erk, maybe a rubbish UCI Conti team with no paid riders. A good UCI Conti team should have over 10 times that amount for a year.
But yes I agree you'd have to be loopy to put half a mil in for just one race, and a women's one too which means a fraction of the exposure
Very true. In addition, the cost of association with a property (rights fee) may be £500k, but the "cost" to the sponsoring company will be significantly more. If you pay a rights fee and sit back and wait for the benefits to flow, as with an advert, invariably they don't. The sponsorship needs to be leveraged ( using additional marketing media to exploit the commercial potential of the acquired rights) and activating it ( promotion aimed at the engagement, involvement, or participation of the sponsorship audience). This is often cited as anything from 1-3 times the rights fee.
Finally, the assumption that if a company sponsors a male cycle team or event it would also gain benefit from a female team or event is not a given. There are a broad variety of media available other than sponsorship and hundreds if not thousands of properties available. Some of these may be a significantly better fit in terms of delivering on brand communications objectives.0 -
They should go to these guys for sponsorship:

On the list of chairmen, there are some 70 firms on there. £7k a head for major blue chips to advertise and highlight a laudable campaign AND support some of the best women riders out there in an unfair environment for them.

I agree, from a personal perspective the women's equivalent of the Tour or Giro in terms of being one of the biggest couple of races of the year would be a bigger draw than a relatively unimportant men's race.
I guess it's back to the well worn argument, are you watching the pinnacle of the sport at the top end of women's cycling or is it as some on here have argued just the equivalent of a 2nd cat male race.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0 -
Is female tennis the equivalent of Men's county tennis? Is female golf? The story of how female tennis gained in popularity is a really good one - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_Slims_Circuithttp://www.georgesfoundation.org

Yeah, I know she is talented, but that was a minute outside of the World's qualifying time this year. AND she's doing a PHD, racing part time (and presumably splashing around in the water as well as she does "long" triathlons)... I'm impressed anyway.http://www.georgesfoundation.org

Very sad. How come women's Tri doesn't (appear) to have this issue. Surely there's more women roadies. Or maybe there isn't0 -

Reckon that to be the case ie there's more women roadies. Whilst there is sponsorship in tri I don't think it does much towards paying the light bills but gives them equipment/prize money0 -

They use the same venue on the same weekend as the men. That's the only way I can see things working in women's road cycling as well.0 -

True. Elite womens tri comps are generally part of the same event as the mens - see the ITU World Tri series. Sponsorship spreads across the events and covers elite men, elite women, juniors, all the age-range classifications etc.0 -

...and even if they were not held at the same venue the demands on sponsors would be less than for road racing as there are fewer events across a season (which only last one day anyway) and fewer professional athletes/teams needing funding. Triathlon (both genders) has quite a small pro top end and an extensive amateur age group profile.0 -

but the issue isnt necessarily the sponsors, well not all of them, obviously some probably dont get it, but the amounts involved seem pretty steep, do Tri races get half a million quid per race sponsorship, and arguably its nearly 1million in total with the individual stage inputs on top but lets stick with 500k for now, do road races normally cost that much to sponsor ?
and even if you were a sponsor with half a million pounds burning a hole in your pocket, and wanted to get into womens cycling, well there are other options that might give you a better return or longer exposure and do more for the same amount of money0 -
