    From The Guardian:
Several athletes have been suspended since the turn of 2016 after testing positive for the dug. Abebe Aregawi, the 2013 women’s 1,500m world champion, has been provisionally suspended after meldonium was found in an A sample she provided. Endeshaw Negesse, the 2015 Tokyo marathon champion, was also banned after reportedly testing positive for the same substance. Others include Olga Abramova and Artem Tyschcenko, two Ukrainian biathletes, Eduard Vorganov, a Russian cyclist and Ekaterina Bobrova, a Russian ice dancer.

I guess everyone should have got the message by now, even if they didn't get round to reading WADA updates!

So, no, I don't think it is a 'pretty crap' PED, Rich

Is it so good that you would willfully throw away a multi-million dollar brand on the hope you wouldn't get tested at a Grand Slam.

A lot more are going to be announced. And from what I understand, it will be far from just Russians & ex-Soviet countries athletes. There will be some from the West. Plus some from African countries have already been announced, more to follow.

She's Ethiopian, whatever the change to her passport. Lives & trains in Ethiopia.

Dunno. Who cares. Her excuse is pretty implausible. Maybe they made a mistake in overlooking it becoming banned. Maybe they thought she wouldn't be tested. Maybe they thought she was too big a name to fall. Maybe she took the wrong tablets from her stash.

As an aside, is she really part of the Russian sporting regime? She has been US based since childhood I think, I remember seeing her on TransWorld Sport when she was about 12. Obviously she still competes as a Russian, but is it fair to use her as another stick to beat the Russian sporting authorities?

That's certainly what she's telling the Swedish tax man.

I forgive her. If she wants to seek asylum at my house she is more than welcome. I'm sure my forehand would improve.

Can I ask something Rich? Do you think Lance Armstrong ever took PEDs?

Perhaps other athletes, supported with lavish public funding, maybe protected by a corrupt/incompetent leader, stopped before the testers came? Tennis has ignored match fixing for years and been an olympic sport since '88. Why would Sharapova imagine they'd suddenly care about PEDs?

Perhaps they are just waiting for her to turn up at the local Wetherspoons for a pint of Skol and a bag of pork scratchings before making their move.

That statement makes the big assumption that she hasn't / doesn't use them.
She's a tennis player and tennis has totally ignored it's problems so far.

The Froome testing may have been the tipping point.
I'm now declaring my position that doping talk is boring.
It's boring when based on speculation and even more boring based on fact.

Up until 31st Dec this want on the banned list - it is now and she got caught. The reasons why she took it and whether her entourage should have advised her better are all debatable. However a good proportion on this forum seems to take the view that if you are caught hold your hands up and come back clean (Millar for example) then this is seen as much better than the no remorse dopers that fight tooth and nail overturn a cut and dry test and still count results when they have been expunged (Contador, JTL, Valverde, Vino et al).
IMO - good to see she has accepted strict liability, is prepared to take the ban and go from there - cynics may say this is a ploy to show contrition for a substance that only weeks before wasn't banned with the hope of a shorter ban - however better this than a long drawn out legal fight or the farce where they still compete whilst they fight it then lose the appeal and are banned.

WADA do their website, and email comms etc, and then the NADOs and intl Feds do their comms too (emails to flag up to look at latest lists. websites etc).p - And yes, this includes Russia. It's also covered by various sports media outlets.

Certain Russian tweeters have been tweeting screenshots of the notice posted on the RUSADA website since 30 Sep last year.

As per their practice, WADA gave 3 months notice last Autumn of the change effective 1 Jan

In the case of Sharapova, she admits that last Dec she saw the 'Oi athletes, the list has changed, CLICK HERE' email...and didn't

Next week, WADA wipes multi-millionaires noses for them but get complaints for not using those nice balsam tissues

Yep, and another Russian, shorttracker Elistratov as well. Never heard about this meldonium, but it seems popular.

Amazing that someone who lives her life, by all accounts, to maximise every minute of the day to keep herself in tip-top shape, can overlook something like this.
