I'm not sure you re right really. Putin needs to keep his people happy and a lot of that is revitalising the patriotism that has led dormant inside a lot of Russians since the fall of the Soviet Union. Syria/Ukraine/attacks on gay rights etc. bangs the drum for mother russia and diverts people attention from the reality that the economy has gone down the pan, the Ruble has halved in value and that the supermarket shelves are somewhat more empty than they were 2 years ago.

Surely Russia's just going to do what they always do when they're caught doing something wrong (e.g., Syria, Crimea) and brazenly deny everything regardless of how obviously guilty they are.
It's called the Shaggy Strategem:

Syria as in the country Parliament said we can't bomb so Cameron went ahead and did it anyway by embedding our pilots in another air force?0 -

The very same, although I'm not sure how that's germane to this discussion."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

And a lot of that is bolstered by Russia winning large on the big stage - look, we are better, stronger, faster than the corrupt and weak West - and on Russia getting all these huge global sporting events to host which are platforms for Putin to puff off his might and greatness, and give the prols happy0 -
true- but then unless they are shut out of Rio (which I just don't see happening), that won't be affected. Especially as it's only athletics that it looks like being banned. They can still win all the Judo, boxing, shooting, weightlifting etc etcWe're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

Judo, you say?

From the WADA press report.
"In the meantime, all samples for the Moscow Antidoping Center will now be transported securely, promptly and with a demonstrable chain of custody to an alternative WADA-accredited laboratory."
Presumably the one in Finland.
Does this mean that an external agency is going to be allowed in to take the blood samples themselves because without that, it's pointless?seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
I seem to remember some complaints about WADA testers experiencing delays in getting visas approved and using this as alleged proof of state colluded doping within other countries. Cant remember where i saw it so might be baseless. Though as not every country has a lab, it would suggest some countries have multinational testers and this approach could be used for Russia.0

Given how difficult it seems to catch dopers (in any sport), and the outsized rewards at the top level, the risk/reward balance quickly tips in favour of doping. The higher the pay, the sooner people come to that conclusion.
(Let's think of it this way, if you're paying your players £200m a year, spending £10m on a high class doping regime is trump change)
It's not like it's exclusive to sport either. Plenty of corporations go through the same thought process, then the worst of the offenders get caught (VW, UBS, etc), they throw their hands up and say 'but everyone was doing it' and they're probably right.
After all, it's only a scandal when it hits the press....
Re: VW from personal/professional experience not everyone was doing it and the shock within the industry is genuine.
Don't want to derail the thread, but there aren't many cars around that give off similar levels of measured emissions in their tests and in the real world...0 -

Yeah, but there's a difference between having a special piece of software to defeat the testing equipment and engineering your car to perform better in the test environment. As one example it's been well know for years that manufacturers game the fuel efficiency tests (using legal means), and higher MPG = higher emissions.
It's like the difference between a school encouraging their kids to cheat in their exams compared to aiming all of the teaching at passing exams (which is a common complaint).0 -

The complaint within the industry is that the testing (more for petrol than diesel) is not remotely representative of real world driving conditions, so you end up in an insane situation as described where engineers have to compromise to make a car that performs well in the real world and still gets high rating for emissions.
A lot of manufacturers are in the process of getting out of diesel in the next 5 years or so precisely because it is getting more and more difficult to make a car comply to emissions standards as well as deliver the efficiency and performance that the customer demands at a price they're willing to pay.
From my own experience, the amount of interminable meetings I've sat through to shave 10g of a part or work out if the overall cost of changing the shape ever so slightly of 4 or 5 parts will effect the aerodynamics enough to show a demonstrable impact on MPG tell me that my employer isn't gaming the system. Because just doctoring the ECUs would be much, much simpler and an Audi A3 weighs lots more than any car of simila size."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

I'm on page 154 of the WADA report.
Its fair to say that it's a little bit more professional than CIRC. I've not yet seen a between 20% and 80% are doping 'finding', although it is still a little unclear at this stage whether it's 99% or 100%.
And it appears to be all sports, not just athletics.0 -
Does this mean that cycling won't be seen in such a bad light or are all sportsmen dopers guilty until (impossibly) proved otherwise?
well all Ill note is that the Beebs website chief sports writers article and look who they went and put centre stage on an article about drugs in athletics... http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/347679620 -

Would be one potential explication for why Arsenal tend to have more injuries than is typical for a premier league team.0

Either that is tongue in cheek or you're saying that they are the only clean team in the PL.
Someone has been cutting the stuff Jose Mourinho gets. It can be the only explanation.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
Bear in mind all the stories of Arsene using Cortisone as a regular medication when he first arrived in England.
He has often spoken about elevated blood levels in players that have transferred in.0 -
