Some love for the 456C thread.

New lower, wider bars. Ragley 740mm bars. Rides so well!

My bike from the very beginning of this thread has had a few changes recently. Gone back to 2x9 from 1x9 with an xtr cassette and rings with an e thirteen bash. Had to change the tyres after one of my conti x kings decided to explode so now got a Rocket Ron 2.2 on the rear with a big Hans Dampf 2.4 up front. New saddle from an onone bignose to a charge spoon. And decided to upgrade my forks so the Recon 120mm are up for sale and been replaced with 2012 Revelations 150mm. Love this bike even more now!

  • Really nice that pal, nicest red one ive seen. However what on earth are you doing with that poor mans chain stay protector? Get a proper one, you must have a dozen lying around.

    Weight?

I'd say he doesn't even need a protector with that C-Guide on there.

I was thinking the same as I also have the X0 clutch type rear mech, I will see if there is any chain noise on her maiden voyage, if not I will remove the protector.

Almost 100%, clutch mech + c-guide will make your ride silent!

I'm looking to go 1 x 10 very soon on mine with a clutch mech & a narrow/wide ring. Just need to swallow the 120 odd its going to cost 0_o

  • That's turned out awesome Mr Evil. Rarely see this colour, and it looks wicked. Look after that Kashima coating - don't put any Fork Juice on them (advised of this recently).

Afaik it won't work. Because its a 73mm BB shell the BB adapter takes up the only spacer you'd normally have and the chain line will be totally out. So you need a guide that is a BB mount as standard, any that are ISCG won't fit. I might be wrong but pretty sure that's the case.

I'm really happy with the bike but do wish they made it in 17"..
Its not the lightest build but it was never intended to be.
It Climbs well . well well enough for me ..1x9 and gravity inspired
Excellent on the downs and surprisingly comfortable through the rocky sections like Cain n Abel on the MBR
Not the prettiest of frames they say , but I'm definitely a function over form guy and for the money you really cant beat it .
OMG a fastback! I love my type 3's!

how did you mount the chain guide ??? cheers matey

It would be fine using SIDS or Reba's with a longer stem etc., however, this a slack frame and you'd be better off with something like an On-One Whippet if you're after an XC frame that's light. Course the 456 would give you the option to swop out the forks for bigger travel if you want to hit the harder stuff down the line.

    The choice is yours.…

Sorry looking picture with a flat tyre, was unable to change it as I had cracked my elbow and decided to faceplant the floor at the last Brownbacks race (very silly thing to do)

Few things have changed since that photo including the rims, mainly due to breaking them....

    2012-07-28134459.jpg

Things I have found out about the C456, do not use Bottom Bracket mounting front mechs, 36 tooth front ring on a twin set up is what you can get away with as the 38 is a little to close to the frame.

Some nice bikes on this thread.

hi matey, just wondered why you say not to use a bb mounted mech ?

Hi mate, the bottom bracket/down tube is mahoosive and fouls the bottom bracket mech.

A chain device an be fitted aslong at the metal is straight.

That C456 is no more as some robbing bastard took it late Feb

I've not tried it yet but this is my trial fitting (not cabled up yet, hence the gear) running 100mm Reba RL's

  • Not particularly. What's the problem with it specifically?

Paul.. it was my fault, realised I had a 30.9mm post not a 31.4mm post  sorted with the correct sized post, also gave me an excuse to buy a carbon one too :D

Chose this bike over my Merida to commute to work on this morning, still a few tweeks to make but quick/nimble/comfortable, just what I was after.

All I need now is some time off to get out and enjoy it properly
  • I was thinking it might have been post size but hoped you'd come to the conclusion yourself :)

I used mine for a commute recently and i really enjoyed it. However, getting dirty is what it prefers to do :D

    Enjoy

  • Do many people commute on the carbons? I'm thinking of dropping my talas to 120mm, fitting some shwalbe big apples and giving it a blast, I use the C2C route for the most part of my work commute so it's all tarmaced with no steep climbs atall. I run 11/36 with 32T upfront 10 speed which should he comfortable enough.
  • When the nights become a little lighter I shall be using my 456 for commuting the 35mile round trip on a night shift, I will be doing approx 14 of my 17miles each way off road (including Wharncliffe Woods) 8)
  • Hi all Being interested in a carbon 456 for a while now and finally have the money so just asking any body selling one? Looking for a 20" in black or white with white, black or grey graphics as it a frame swap and majority of my parts are orange. Ive allowed my self £160ish to get one so any one know one for sale? Cheers
  • Keep an eye on the classifieds. £160 is a long shot I'd say but you never now your luck. Worth keeping an eye on pinkbike and eBay too.

20" ? Are you very tall?

Have you considered your current parts might not be portable to a c456 frame?

  • I haVe checked and I should only need a new headset, seatpost and clamp and a shorter stem. And according to onones sizing charts I'm 6ft and a inside leg of 35" and I'm still growing abit so a 18" would be abit small so going for a 20" to last don't to be having to change frames again becauses it too small!
    Cheers
