  • Here's a question for you mr Phil, have you ever attached panniers/racks to your 456? I've read on this thread that someone managed to do it but it involved empty plastic bottles and tie wraps. (Doesn't sound secure enough to me but it sounded like it worked!) I've seen seatpost mounted packs but I've got a carbon post so don't want to mark it if possible.

Never had them fitted as I always used a rucksack/camelback.

I've got some issues with my seatpost slipping that carbon paste doesn't seem to solve.

Thing is, I never really know how tight I can do up the seatclamp - being carbon on carbon n all.

Should I be worried? Or shall I just crank it up a bit more? It's far from tight as it is....

Snap, I'm looking at my seat clamp as the culprit, going to try a different one

Yeah true. I might try a cheapy super star one. Not keen on spending £20 on a hope one!
  • Plyphon / The_moodster - you chaps using quick release seat clamps or bolted jobbies?

I've never had reliability or confidence in QR seat clamps so switched to a superstar bolt clamp and never looked back, or should I say down :D

Not sure what force you can load on carbon post to carbon tube - best check with On-One boys just in case.

I see super start do a "carbon specific" seat clamp that uses a bolt rather than QR - supposed to spread the load to avoid over tightening. Might give that a go.

Can anyone else chime in? How tight is too tight with a QR collar?

    Cheers.

When using the Hope QR I used to do it quite tight (Superstar alloy post). Didn't have any issues with dropping.

With regards to how tight I used to have the QR 70% open then then nut hand tight then clamp it.

QR, post comes out too much to faff with a bolted jobbie. Thinking about it it's one I dug out of my spares bin, which was rejected from a previous build, so I'm pretty sure it's the culprit.

Bolted here but I run a dropper

    Any good?

I run with recon tk gold at 120mm and find it perfect for xc and the occasional whinlatter trip. I don't do any big drop offs or anything spectacular but find 120 a perfect all rounder. Going downhill I've never bottomed out. Must admit I would love a set of fox talas so I could try switching between 120 and 150 though.

Anybody had a look at on-ones prototype c456 Evo?

Some way off I'd imagine but will be interesting to compare both models.

ran mine with rebas at 120mm and the bike was sound..

now got 150mm 20mm axle for stiffer front end and finding it a bit too lose now??

so maybe ill add some spacers and try 140-130 etc or even go back to 120 ?
i do prefer the 20mm axle after qr fitting though

I've been running mine with a 120 Reba, straight steerer & QR for over a year, done loads of miles mainly XC stuff, I liked it enough to stick with it as even at 120 I find it a little bit "lifty & wandery" on steeper climbs.
I Recently bought a new Rockshox SID 120 with tapered steerer & 15mm maxle light. WOW what a difference so much more direct and solid than the old Reba which I though was pretty good anyway. I now find myself barging through things much faster than before as the fork can take it. The only downside is I'm occasionally hitting things with the rear a bit too hard now & getting more pinch punctures as a result.

I think it's got to come down to what type of riding you're planning but it works fine with a 120 & at 100 it turns into a real sharp steering single track rig.

well i did drop the sektor solo air forks to 120mm today and so glad i did

bike is all good again and goes where i point it!!! "i just cant see why 150mm is so popular as it killed mine handling wise" and i nearly sold the frame as so fed up with its horrid handling ??

    Chainsuck sucks

    chainsuck.jpg

Managed to get away with little damage

    newghettoprotectorandsm.jpg

Did myself a new ghetto tube protector (bit more robust one this time) and I added a couple of strategically placed cable ties on the chainstay, near to the ring, which will hopefully stop the chain from being sucked too far up! (though I'm not convinced.

Chains knackered according to the chain checker so hopefully I'll get away without having to replace cassette and crankset.

New chain on worn chain ring is the absolute worst combo for chain suck so don't even bother fitting one until you've got new cogs, if the chain is 0.75% worn or more you'll likely need a new cassette and maybe even jockey wheels too...yes I have had an expensive month recently!

    http://fagan.co.za/Bikes/Csuck/

Covering the chainstay with zip ties behind the rings does stop damage when it happens but doesn't really stop the chain getting jammed.

I also found certain chain lubes made the chains suck.

Best one I have tried is Muc Off C3, apply it properly and it is fine.

    All good advice, thanks

The chainsuck occurred once and not done it since, and only on the granny ring (which I don't use typically - bloody typical) which is a little worse for wear. The chain has been fine - good gear changes and no slipping etc., but I bought a chain checker and the reading came up as worn/time to replace!!
The middle chain ring looks ok, but as you say, a worn tooth profile is unlikely to work well with a new chain, so yes it's new crankset time. The cassette looks as good as new but is best replacing it also?

Hadnt thought about replacing the derailleur sprockets.

Looking good - glad youre enjoying it.

I've asked a few questions on the c456 Evo - as you can see on that Instagram pic. Looking forward to seeing it develop.

PS - what's with the denim shorts? ;)

I was thinking more George Michael than Patrick Swayze, but as someone who is a little older than 23 yrs of age, I'll have to take your word for it ;D

Thought I'd update this thread and give it a little bump rather than start another of my own.
I started with a Scandal 26er, but always had a niggle about something with more travel up front.

So the Scandal was sold, the wheels and forks donated to my OHs bike and a C456 build began.

Finally got all the bits last week so built it this morning.

18" C456 frame (from the forum classifieds)
    110 - 140mm U Turn Revelations (from classifieds)
Cheapy wheels (from classifieds ages ago)
    Oro K24 brakes
    Easton XC70 carbon bars
    SLX crankset and BB
8 spd XT cassette and shifters
    XTR shadow rear mech
    Deore front mech
    Exotic seat post and stem
    Intense tyres

12.2KG as is and if I like the ride I'll be replacing the brakes and possibly wheels

Nice looking bike that twonks. Good spec and good colour combo. Let me know if you ever upgrade your forks, I'm after some of those!
