Watch out for the resistance cable catching under the rear tyre and either making a noise or wearing the cable casing away as it crosses over
I put the lever on LH side on mine

My Condor 531 Pro is now officially my winter hack with a new bike on its way. Got some mudguards to put on it, and 25c GP 4 Seasons to go on the wheels.

Although I have a 3rd bike in the wings... a Nigel Dean 531c frame with the old 600EX gear to go on it that came off the Condor, not sure what this will be used for. More likely an "around town" cruising bike.

That's a lovely bike. How old is it? It looks like a recently built bike to me as there is no sign of down tube shifters. I'd really like a steel bike but I'm not sure whether to get an old frame and go retro or get a complete new bike.

The Frame was built 1987 and has downtube shifters, you can see the "STI cable stops" where the down tube shifters used to be.

The group set was from a 1985 Raleigh Road Ace which was too big for me, Shimano 600EX, but more recently I changed alot of components:
    - Wheels are DuraAce hubs (126mm OLN), Mavic Open Pro CD rims, sapim spokes, built up by Harry Rowland
    - FD and RD are Dura Ace
    - Shifters are 8 speed Sora (works with 7 speed cassette)
    - Chainset is Ultegra compact
    - brakes are still 600EX but I have some Ultegra to replace them.
    - Bars and Stem are Ritchey Logic

The old 600EX stuff is going on the Nigel Dean 531c frame as a "run around".

My advise whatever bike you get, is to go with modern shifters, which really needs a 130mm OLN rear hub. My 531 pro frame has 753 rear stays which can't be cold set, hence I had to stay with 126mm OLN hubs. If you get a standard 531 frame you can permanently stretch the rear stays (cold set) and fit modern hubs/group set.

If you want a modern steel bike, you could get a custom made 631 or 853 (depending on budget)? Rourke's are just starting to build my custom 953 frame, which is the best possible steel frame, perhaps the best frame possible!

Thanks for the detailed reply. For an old bike it does look surprisingly new. I think eventually I'd like a brand new, custom built steel winter/light touring bike. I look forward to seeing your new build.

Here's my winter bike. Recently bought it, will replace the reflectors with new lights which are on their way. I love the disk brakes, otherwise it feels like I'm on a rolling death trap with calipers on my road bike riding in the wet.

    This was my winter steed....

Just in the process of selling it. Never used it much as I prefer my Spesh and ended up riding it all the time, so the Revolution Cross sat there never being used!!

Here's mine, built it up last week with a frame from Ebay and a SRAM Apex groupset courtesy of Fudges Cyclestore (thanks guys!). Running super smooth on Michelin Krylion 25mm tyres and with rattle-free SKS mudguards. Rides really well and I think it looks quite smart as well :D

Titus Silk Road Ti rigid 29er - Scott Solace 10 disc - Kinesis Crosslight Pro6 disc - Scott CR1 SL - Pinnacle Arkose X 650b - Pinnacle Arkose singlespeed - Specialized Singlecross...& an Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray 4 string...

What a great looking (and proper winter) bike, I salute your exquisite taste, sir! The Tifosi was top of my shortlist for my recent winter build but I got a great deal on a Kinesis T2 which was equal first with the Tifosi.
  • My 2011 Kinesis TK2 before use! Great frame and forks for the price...

Getting around Bristol on this at the moment. Mainly Campag Mirage/Veloce components, with an Ultegra SL chainset 'cos the bearings hold up well in the winter (no creaking!). Khamsin wheels shod with Vittoria Rubino Pro III 25mm tyres - they just about get on with the crud mudguards. The thing is tank heavy but it's all reliable, well working kit which is what matters to me whether it be winter or summer bike.
