I'd like to get a trend going again which featured on this site a couple of years ago. With Autumn in the air, and the weather currently rubbish, thoughts turn to putting the so called "good bike" into hibernation and out comes the mudguards, and the bikes which get a lot of mileage and perhaps not so much T.L.C. Its time to get the hack out and starting the routine of "winter miles =summer smiles". If you've made the change over -show us your winter bike!!
I'll get a picture up of my own in the next few days.

  • Here's my first Road bike which Ive had around 3 months or so. I had planned on buying a Trek Madone before the summer was out, but decided to wait and just use the Colnago through the winter. Ive ordered some Crud Roadracer MK2's and im just going to try and keep it as clean as I can and treat myself to a Carbon bike next year.

  • here's my winter clunker...

bought off here a week or two back... it's a 2011 Hongfu FM001 full carbon (Toray T700) frame and fork with Sram Rival groupset, Planet X Model-B wheels, Vitorria Zariffo Pro Slicks, Deda cockpit, 105 SPD's, Crud2 mudguards and a variety of flashing LED lights.

i'm pretty happy with it, although i need more carbon so am hunting out some Deda carbon bars and stem to match the seatpost and some 50mm carbon tubs or clinchers (which you simply HAVE to have on a winter bike... lol).

the only issue I have now is that the bike is so good I'm struggling to justify keeping the £5.5k Cinelli sat in my lounge right now (hence putting it in the classifieds).

  • Heres my new baby, just arrived this weekend and first outing on her today, which was handy seeing as lots of roads were covered in muddy run off water from the fields! :o

I selected the bike using the Ribble special edition route and was rewarded with 10 spd Tiagra instead of 9 spd at no extra cost :D Needless to say I'm a very happy bunny!

Thinking about mudguards though.. but not sure how useful they will be since I try to avoid wet weather.

winter in Qatar - means higher winds - so no aero frames or deep rims because of the side wind effect.

Am I the only person who is worried that half of these lovely "winter" bikes don't actually have mudguards...?

Do you all live in Portugal then,

or, like Miguel, none of your ride "indurain"............. :P

Yeah the standard of some of these "winter" bikes is pretty high. I think I'd end up with a "super hack deep winter" bike too if my "winter" bike was a Cervelo or Colnago.

Some sort of 80's Peugeout frame and fork bought off Ebay for £40, some sort of wheels, cranks and seat that came with the frame, rear wheel converted to singlespeed, BMX chain, chainring and pedals. Bontrager stem with Cannondale bars and Tektro R200 levers using 1" to 1 1/8" threadless conversion. Gearing 40-14. Flat pedals so I can wear work boots and don't have to mess around with clips and overshoes. Going to get some mildly knobbly tyres for when the snow comes. Also now fitted with some mudguards I had lieing around. Build price < £100. A proper winter bike
Thoughts? I almost know you'll all hate it. This is just for communting 20 miles a day, I still use my proper bike on a weekend.

I had to fabricate some brackets on the dropouts and heat up the rear mudguard just above the front derailier clamp and bend the mudguard a bit to give ample clearance for the tyre. With cooler weather im thinking one bottle should do for a two hour ride.
Next job is to smear grease on the brake and gear pivot points to keep the salt off.

    A small collection here.

The Ribble keeps me going for close to 10 months of the year, rain or shine.
    P1080264sm.jpg

The Dawes covers Mid December through to mid Feb - which seems to be when the real drive train wear and tear occurs. Probably about 95% of it. Parts are really cheap for this.
    P1070054.jpg

The Orange P7 covers snow and ice time with a set of Marathon Winters on it.

Lol - half well spotted! I hadn't noticed. So much for making sure the crank was lined up etc etc! However, you are not quite correct. It is my rear brake that is undone
