Don't reveal all! Got to wait until next week before I get my copy.

Sounds like a lot of riders, managers and officials are going to have plenty to explain or deny.

Surely the smart ones will come out and explain. The dam is very much creaking and about to give way. If enough of them admit it we will probably end up feeling sorry for them all and despising the ones who stay silent or deny.

Without wishing to spoil the denoument of your book, I can exclusively reveal that Tyler gets caught in the end.

I had one of them red bikes but I don't any more. Sad face.

Does anyone know how to get hold of the USA copy here in the UK?

If you have a Kindle I believe there is a way to link it to the .com site rather than the .co.uk site and get US copies of books that way. No idea if it works but I'm sure google will tell you that.

I got it on Kindle from the French Amazon site which has both the American and English versions. I had to change the location of my Kindle to France to be able to download from there.
  • Just order from Amazon.com if you want a paper copy

    Question.

I read in one of the links on here that Tyler Hamilton at various times avoided testers including by hiding in his house and ignoring them (something about looking at his wife to say I'm not clean and both of them hitting the deck). Similarly apparently Lance Armstrong avoided the testers. Would these not count as missed tests?

Regulations now mean 3 missed tests = suspension (eg. Rassmussen). But was the regime different back then?

Talking/writing about the incident when the tester turned up and he and the wife hit the deck, he said that he later modified the whereabouts form. Dont know when the ADAMS website came in so dont know how that would have worked 12-odd years ago.

Can't wait to get my hands on the book...

I have a really weird uneasy feeling, bit of a knot in my stomach actually, that "the sport of professional cycling" is imploding. Just reading all that JV/Danielson/Dekker/JJ/Garmin crap, Meuseeuw's (sic) statement etc etc;the unbelievable Vuelta performances that smack of something fishy still going on; the incredible silence of the UCI... Its all mounting up and its getting too much... It seems like the charade isnt going to go on much more: The dam is about to burst, and in a catastrophic way. What a freaking joke the professional edition of our sport is.

I wouldn't worry about it. Riders and officials have been acting the cnut for over a century now, using whatever means have been available to them. The only difference is that this crisis is more public. In another decade, we'll again be colouring ourselves surprised that people have been cheating for money / fame/ whatever.

Plus ça change and all that.

    Some bits:

New Method # 1: “Doctor Ferrari had invented one in which he diluted Andriol (testosterone) with olive oil. He kept it in little vials and just a few drops were enough to get immediate benefits, without being able to get caught by the doping tests. We always brought them with us. One day I was so empty that I asked Lance to give me some. He took out the droplet administer, he put some drops in my mouth feeding me like a baby bird.”

New Method # 2: “Doctor Fuentes, for me Ufe, said to me in 2004 that he’d bought a new and more sophisticated type of freezer. We called it “Siberia.” It allowed for him to keep in his studio several sacks of blood at a time, thus avoiding that I’d have to make several long trips to Madrid. It cost 50,000 dollars a season plus bonuses for victories (Hamilton had to pay Fuentes).

New Method # 3: “With Ufe we had a code to establish where we would do the transfusions during the race. We’d send a cell text message with numbers like 167 and that would be the hotel room, previously agreed upon, where we’d have met. I was always nervous, because I feared that I’d get caught. So when the door knocked and there was Ufe, I always felt relieved. The Boss: “If you ever complained about the ruthlessness and fatigue of the training workouts, or if you arrived even 5 minutes late, Lance gave you hell. You entered his black list and you were ****ed. That’s how he got Bobby Julich, who he really couldn’t stand, fired from the team. Later he didn’t even have the scruples to fire Kevin Livingston, who was his friend and who had stood close by him during his illness. Kevin had dared to ask him for salary increase and rather than receiving it, Lance had the team budget cut lowering the salaries of Kevin and others to be able to hire three Spaniards. He also asked me to give up my bonus of $ 25,000 and you couldn’t say no. The Spy: “After the Ventoux stage of the 2004 Dauphine Libere (when Hamilton was riding with Team Phonak), I was summoned by the UCI. There was no positive test, but they told me to watch out. I thought that request to come to the UCI headquarters was really strange. But then during a subsequent stage of the Tour that season, Floyd Landis (who was still riding with US Postal) told me that Lance had called Hein Verbruggen (then president of the UCI) telling him to investigate Phonak, because Armstrong thought they were probably using new stuff. It wasn’t true though. I was so ****ing ****ed off because I foresaw a year of humiliation within the cycling world. So one day I confronted Armstrong and told him to “**** off!” That was a big satisfaction.

The Dinner: “In 2011 I was in Aspen with some friends, where Lance owns a house, and we went to dinner at Cache Cache, his favorite place to eat. I had heard that he was out of town, but all of a sudden he arrived and sat at the bar. I became aware of it only when I came back from the bathroom and when I did my stomach tightened up. It was Lance. I was embarrassed to see him, because it was right after the 60 minutes interview. I didn’t know what to say. He came over and exclaimed menacingly: “When you take the witness stand in court, we’re gonna rip you apart! You’re gonna look like a ****ing idiot! We’re going to make your life a living hell!” I told him that if he wanted to talk about it we could step outside. But he just kept shouting insults at me. I went back to our table and we finished our meal, but I was really upset.”
  • Are those extracts? Would people mind not posting any more until after those of us in the UK have had a chance to get our hands on a copy (not out until 12 Sep here).

    Thanks,

Please keep posting the titbits. Not all of us are going to read the book but we like to hear a bit of gossip.

We can't wait for everyone to read it before discussing it.

Maybe the OP or a Mod could add a *SPOILER* warning to the thread title? That would presumably resolve any objections.

They're gunna be spoilers if you discuss the book.

Can't discuss a book without the content.

Reading the Times would mean giving money to that malignant shit Murdoch, so oddly that wasn't a problem. And I like the discussion on the thread, without the gory details being spoiled.

    Edit: have just noticed this:

Thank you for doing this - at least if there are going to be spoilers fair warning seems reasonable. Now avoiding the thread until I've read the book.
Sure, anything else you'd like us all to do while you're at it?? (I can guess what you'll think of as an answer )

    Please enlighten me.

    Andy
  • There are 300 pages in the book. I dont think some tit bits are going to ruin it. I mean, its not exactly Sixth Sense where you're going to spoil it by revealing the ending

If we're going to have a Spoiler thread then there also needs to be a PTP thread. Everyone picks 10 riders - if he's implicated in the book, you get 5 points, but -10 points if he's not.

(and at least if there's a Spoiler thread noone can moan if doping is mentioned!)

When a mate wouldnt come to the pub one night cos he was staying in watching The Usual Suspects, we texted him with the 5 words "Kevin Spacey is Kaiser Soze" (his reply was "If I hadn't seen it already you'd be dead" :) )

    :mrgreen::lol:

I listen to the Kermode and Mayo film review podcasts. They often discuss the issue of spoilers, usually culminating with the phrase "He's dead, she's a man and it's a sledge!"

Unpleasant people like Lance Armstrong dope and nice people like Tyler Hamilton also dope
    Prentice Steffen, L'Equipe 2006

Is this a rough plot summary ?

Yes. And it's also quoted in the book.
