I would have thought that the 6 different settings are for the different levels if you adjust the resistance using the handlebar lever (looks like this is an optional extra for the Magneto)0

January 196, March 209, May 217. Maybe May was just a blinder but would have expected to have caught/surpassed that by now. No changes in kit (PM and turbo) and mindful of freshness. Thought I'd be pushing 230 by now
Dont take this as gospel as I am not a coach, but if you are riding majorly at endurance pace you will not really be raising threshold levels - you do need sequenced sessions at threshold and above to achieve higher tolerances. The benefit of what you have been doing is the ability to ride longer and hopefully stronger.
If you dont race/compete and therefore need to go into the 'red' as racing demands are not charitable, I'd forget FTP.. even though that contrary to a lot of people's thinking.0 -

Yep that's what I thought, But the Cyclops Magneto is a little unique in Magnetic trainers in that it has variable resistance like a fluid trainer, and not set by a remote lever! I m pretty happy with Beta Mag3, figures and feel seem comparable to last years on the Fluid Pro. And I would imagine 3 is mid range for resistance settings if using a remote lever for a standard magnetic trainer.0 -
Hi everyone, first post in this thread. Bit of a background on me: been cycling on and off for 4 years, bit of a fair weather cyclist so always gave up in winter and lost whatever fitness I had built up over the summer. My goal is to start racing some local crits and maybe road races next season (maybe the year after depending how this winter goes). So I've just set up the "winter training room", bought myself a smart trainer and signed up to Trainerroad. I did the 20 minute FTP test on Tuesday and got an FTP of 232. My question is which base plan should I start, there's so many! I have plenty of time to train so high volume isn't an issue, so really which would be the most beneficial regarding my goal?
Thanks in advance.0 -
Does anyone know if the new TrainerRoad beta software has launched yet? The DCRainmaker article from Interbike suggested the end of Sept, but I've not heard anything as yet.
I'm excited about the Android app development too, hopefully it's not going to be too long!0 -

Not that I know of, I've signed up to be notified when it is released so hoping that comes through soon!0 -

Traditional Base seems ideal for you https://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/plans/base0 -

Thank you! I'll be starting that this coming week. Another quick question should I do another FTP test after finishing base before I start the build phase? Or is already accounted for with the first work out usually being an 8 or 20 minute test?0 -
I'm a complete newbie when it comes to TrainerRoad, but I have a quick question when it comes to recording sessions with a Garmin. I've got my Garmin Fenix 3 set up to record all of my sensor data i.e. speed, cadence, heart rate and virtual power as relayed back from TrainerRoad running on the PC. All good so far!
Is it possible to download a plan of a TrainerRoad workout onto my Garmin, so that it takes laps at the appropriate time-points? So say I'm doing a basic 2x 20 min interval workout, the workout plan will tell the Garmin to mark a lap at the end of the prescribed warm-up period, at the end of the first 20 min interval, at the end of the rest period, end of the second 20 min interval etc etc.
I've used running plans from Garmin Connect before and this functionality makes it super-easy to analyse after the event, because you just have to look at the stats for each lap that corresponds to an interval. I'm aware that I can download the files of completed activities from my TrainerRoad account that probably has these lap markers in the correct places, but I'd like to keep using the Garmin to record my workouts for several reasons, chiefly because I trust it's calorie burn metrics and like the VO2 max calculations.
Hope that makes sense and thanks in advance for any help!0 -
If you use the Trainer Road app rather than your Garmin to do the logging of ride then it will do laps.
e.g. https://www.strava.com/activities/398291255/laps0 -
Yes, that's the functionality that I'm looking for but as I mentioned, I'm hoping that there's someway to get the Garmin to do that so that I can keep getting the calorie burn/VO2 max metrics that it supplies.
When I was using one of the running "Training Plans" on Garmin Connect, you could put the scheduled workouts onto your calendar, sync it to the watch and then every day, there'd be a pop up notification on the watch telling you that you have such-and-such workout today. I thought that was quite a cool feature, is there anyway to replicate this with the training plans on TrainerRoad, or even just on a workout-by-workout basis? I could manually recreate all of the workouts on my TrainerRoad plan over in Garmin Connect's "Workout" creator, but this would be a massive ball-ache.0 -
First ride on TR last night and have to say what a great bit of software it is. Was expecting it to be fairly basic but it's really smooth and very polished.
It was a night of firsts: first ride on new Cascade Fluid Pro turbo and first ride with 18" Industrial fan. Turbo looks to be a steal at £150, really impressed and the fan was a revelation after last winter on the turbo without.
20 minute test wasn't as bad as I was expecting, I'm not sure if that's because I'm used to 2x20 from last winter (without a fan) or if I didn't fully exert myself. Think I probably had a little left in me but still fairly happy with FTP of 226. https://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/2411078-20-Minute-Test
Must add, need a new HR strap as it's falling apart and the signal kept dropping out.
Looking forward to the winter training now!0 -

Out of interest which fan did you get? I had a rubbish one last year and have been meaning to get round to sorting out a new one?

This one. http://www.screwfix.com/p/fe45-h1-18-high-velocity-floor-fan-220-240v/54056
Last year I'd climb off the bike drenched from head to toe in sweat, last 2 sessions with the fan I've climbed off and only been a little clammy - and that was on the lowest setting.0 -
Is that the fan drying the sweat then?0
-
You have to sweat before it dries. I'm not sweating as much, as I'm kept much cooler. Heart rate isn't going through the roof either.0
-
Was wondering about these a wee bit ago, what's the noise like ?0
-
Not too bad on the lowest setting - about the same level as my fluid turbo trainer. Haven't tried the other 2 higher settings, but haven't needed to. With both turbo and fan going you could still hold a conversation, but probably need to turn the tv up a few clicks.0

That's the purpose of sweat, to evaporate and keep you cool, but of course if you're cool in the first place you don't sweat as much.0 -

I think you have answered your own question in the question0 -

Might be best asking TR that directly - they are very helpful.0 -
Apologies if this has been asked a million times before (I did look), but has anyone any thoughts about how you can combine trainerroad's plans with a few actual rides?
I usually can fit in one long ride at the weekend, but may not be able to do that AND a decent stint on the turbo, so do I just replace the weekend workout?0 -
That's what I do, stick as close to the plan as possible and generally miss the weekend sessions for actual rides on the road...VO2 Max - 79 ml/kg/min
W/kg - 4.90 -

I'd say the most important part would be to try and fit the rides within the structure of the plan. For example, try and do the outdoor workouts on days when you have an indoor workout scheduled, and try and hit similar zones in that outdoor workout to what is being prescribed for that days workout. Here's a good article on the subject written by Coach Chad: Outdoor Workout Substitutions0 -
Potentially a bit of a daft question, but it is related to trainerroad. Is there anyway I can mute or lower the volume of the warning beeps at the start and end of intervals? I use my laptop hooked up to a tv with a HDMI cable (no aerial in the "training room") so all the volume comes from the tv. I have to have the volume quite high to hear over the turbo then the beeps scare me half to death as they're much loader than the film / show I'm trying to watch!0
-
Is it a Mac or PC? The Windows version certainly has a setting for beep volume in there if you dig around.0

The OSX version has the beep volume adjust as well, under the profile tab.0 -
So here is my proposed set up:
Trainer Road - Wahoo Kickr - Garmin 810 with HRM and Cadence
If i'm using my windows laptop will everything connect via an Ant+ stick?
If I use my iPad the just the Kickr will connect via Bluetooth?
Do you still use your Garmin when going via iPad - how does the power connect to the Garmin?0 -

Consider the Tacx Neo instead, similar price, better productIf I use my iPad the just the Kickr will connect via Bluetooth?
Yes.Do you still use your Garmin when going via iPad - how does the power connect to the Garmin?
You can still use your Garmin if you want, connecting via ANT+ but since all the data you need is on your iPad there's no particular reason to do that.0 -

To answer your Windows question, yes, everything will connect by ANT+.
Obviously a Garmin only receives ANT+, so if you're using your iPad you can't have virtual power broadcast back to the Garmin unless you're using an ANT+ dongle. I find the Garmin useful as a configurable display (e.g. fields showing lap power, zones etc) seeing as this isn't possible in the TR workout screen.
For this reason I'd use your laptop rather than the iPad.0
