  • Thanks for the reassurance, guys!

As a pretty fair-weather cyclists, I'm considering doing more rides indoors this winter.

Another quick question before i buy an ANT+ dongle and sign up for trainer road.

I want to use the power from stages and use the sufferfest videos I already have but with the data on the screen through trainer road but do I need to be connected to wifi when using trainer road as the turbo is set up in the garage with no wifi connection?

Yep, you don't need wifi to use TR, you only need it to load the workouts and to upload your rides after you complete them. I do the majority of my workouts without wifi while I'm traveling, and just hit a Starbucks whenever I can to upload all of my workouts.

    3 new Sufferfests
DAYT TBTITWP TGTTOS quickly matched up to their TR profiles, this is how the weekend pans out.
  • Did TGTTOS today - pretty tough workout. The new beta TR does not yet allow you to drop videos in so I had to use the original version. I will do the other 2 new ones over the next 2 days
  • Does the new Windows beta software currently support Trainer Relay (i.e. retransmitting of Virtual Power data)?

I've been trying to use it on my old netbook, but can't tell if (1) I just can't find the setting for it (2) the option just isn't there or (3) it's somewhere off the screen that I can't see due to my abysmally poor resolution.

It'd be nice if the minimum window dimensions could be a bit smaller, I can't rescale it small enough for my crappy 1024 * 600 display! Same goes for the stats pane at the top of an activity, it'd be cool if the minimum height for that was a bit smaller too, I can't seem to re-scale it at all.

Unfortunately there is no TrainerRelay in the new Beta quite yet, but it's on our list :)

I'll pass along your window size feedback. Thanks!
  • Ok, that's cool, so long as it's not an issue at my end.

Thanks for the update, keep up the good work!

Well, this thread has been going for almost as long as I've been a subscriber to TR.
I have decided to hang up the TR cleats on workout number 888.
It's a good enough number to stop on. I thought.
It's been a good app to work with but things move on.
I now have a full library of Sufferfests... since I have been buying those since 2010 and a recent addition of a Garmin 520.
On the turbo , I ride to %ftp and switch intensities as per the Sufferfest vids... using my phone for video play.
Manhandling the laptop about when you havent got a permanent home for the turbo was always a pain.

Pity you didnt get the Android app out at same time as IOS... I've got fed of waiting, I'm afraid.

Sorry to hear that :( It was a tough decision to make regarding which platform to do first, but we're still just too small to be able to tackle development across multiple platforms at once. The choice came down to which platform the majority of our current users are on, which happens to be iOS. We're also heavily focused on quality over quantity, so rather than having our limited development team crank out apps, we want to perfect each platform we build for to make sure our users spend all of their time with us training and getting faster, not trying to sift through bugs.

Android is our primary focus this current training season. While we don't have an ETA on it just yet, we want all Android users to know we hear you and it's in the works :)

I would still give TR a good rep... but almost forgot to add that this blasted thing has made my turbo work a little less frequent this winter..
    rjKnFpK.jpg
that was nearly 3 months back... it is a little dirtier .. with 6 more lights on it but more or less still in one piece after daily commuter /evening road training torment on Uk roads... I even put garmin vectors on it when a decent road mileage beckons and I know it wont get nicked.
  • Sorry if this a stupid question but I can't for the life of me work this out. I have just started using Trainerroad and have the Windows beta program. I am wanting to know how I "subscribe" to a training plan. It seems that it should be obvious that when I start a plan the program prompts me with my next work out when I next log in. Currently I am navigating my way through the menus to find my next workout. It's not the end of the world, it just seems like it should quicker and simpler. Am I missing something or expecting too much?

Bumping this as I'd also like to know if this is possible to do.

You can "subscribe" to a plan. Click the filter button (top arrow) to show the sidebar if not already showing, then choose your plan.

    TR1.jpg

The entire plan will be listed in the correct order each time you open TR.

Here I've chosen "Sweet Spot Base - Low Volume 1":

    TR3.jpg

You can hit the filter button again to hide the sidebar. Once you've completed a workout it turns green. Hit the "view online" link and it takes you directly to the TR plan webpage with detailed information.

When I open up TR I see this:
    TR5.jpg

I'm in the final week of Sweet Spot Base 1. Having just completed Palisade (green), my next workouts are Black (Tuesday & Thursday), finishing off with Brasstown on Saturday (inverted order).

One last tip, when starting a new plan be sure to use the "Highlight rides after" calendar. Set the date to the first day you'll start the plan. Reason being some workouts are duplicated and may already be highlighted green before you've done then (within the current plan schedule), which can be confusing.

Example, I'll soon be going into Sweet Spot Base - Low Volume 2 but here you can see some rides are already green as I did them earlier this year:

    TR6.jpg

Reset the calendar date and everything is back in order:

  • Thanks for that Freeza, your effort is much appreciated

I don't have the same screen that you are showing, I'm guessing you are using the old program as I believe I'm on the most up to date one. I will have a look if those options are available to me, If not maybe I can get the same program you have from somewhere.

The beta version, missed that in your post. I guess that's what beta testing is all about, finding any issues and reporting back to the devs.

The version I use is the latest full release, still available on their site.

    * I've just had a look at the TR beta page, Training Plan selection is listed as an upcoming feature. Looks like you're out of luck until they add it.

Many thanks Freeza and much apreciated
  • I've just signed up to TR this week and have done my first few sessions. I'm doing it on rollers which is making it interesting. I did the 8 minute FTP test but came out quite low but not sure I did it properly as I was conscious of not crashing as I got tired.

I'm picking and choosing what workouts to do rather than doing a specific plan. All the plan workouts have long sessions in and 60 minutes is the max I fancy on rollers. my ability to stay upright decreases exponentially the longer I am on them!

I was tending to do shorter 20-30 minute sessions in the morning before work so I will look at a few of the TR workouts that enable me to do this and then pick a few of the longer ones to do in the evenings.

Anyone else using rollers? Have any good tips or recommendations for workouts?

I also use rollers. Unless your some kind of bike ninja with mad skillz I'd suggest a credible FTP test just isn't going to happen on free rollers. If you put in a proper effort you will crash from tiredness.

I use a fork stand when doing FTP tests and the power specific workouts like over/unders for exactly this reason. Save riding the rollers free for the longer low power aerobic/endurance sessions. If you do use a fork stand be aware that your FTP figure will be based on the bike setup you used for the test.

When I switch to free rollers I have to drop the workout intensity anywhere between 6-10% as the increased resistance of the front wheel is very noticeable

A TR tech I was messaging with said the beta version is not far away from being full release and is pretty much the finished product.

    Hi Guys,
I'm looking for a turbo trainer to specifically use Trainerroad.....what would be my best option.I can't afford a wahoo kickr....Could you point me in the best direction?
  • Hi Guys,

Next best option would be a Kickr Snap. I've just bought one and it should be arriving tomorrow. I bought it from the Apple store as their price is less than elsewhere. I've been using a Cyclops Fluid 2 dumb trainer with Trainerroad and that has worked very well. I just want to step it up a notch and use a smart trainer. The problem with dumb trainers like the Fluid 2 when using on Trainerroad is you often work a bit harder than you need to. e.g. the target power is 200w. On a dumb trainer it's hard to be precise and to maintain 200watts you often end up in the range of say 205 - 215 watts and you're constantly watching your power.

You need to decide whether you want a smart trainer or a dumb trainer. For dumb trainers the Kurt Kinetic and Cycleops Fluid 2 are highly regarded. Lower priced Smart Trainers include the Tacx Vortex.

    Hope this helps.
  • I have had my Kickr Snap for just over a month now and have to say I've been very pleased with it. Used to have an Elite Elasto before hand which was fine, but having a "smart" trainer really makes a difference for me. First time I've tried riding with some sort of Power output and it is a different ball game. Before I could ease up on the gears, now it just keeps asking for the same power - ouch. The Kickr seems to be working seemessly with TR so happy so far...

For Trainer road I can't see why you would need anything more than a Tacx smart trainer. I have the Bushido smart and it works perfectly and is very quiet. Looking at the specs of the Vortex if I was buying again i'd save a couple of £00 and get that instead.

I've had the Tacx Vortex Smart for about a month now. The ANT+ dongle thing works fine for the most part. But there was an issue with unexpected increases in resistance that created big power 'spikes'; only happened during a recovery bit when the resistance was quite low.

I sent an email to TR support. Here was part of the response "It looks like we have other users experiencing similar power spike issues, it's currently present on most trainers using the ANT+ F-EC profile. We do have developers working on our FE-C connection, it's something we've had to revisit. To put it bluntly, it's not working as it should. Rest assured we are actively working on it, and are aware of the issues users are experiencing."

However, I have since updated the firmware on the unit and it is now working flawlessly -- just assuming these two are related. After doing mostly Sufferfest videos I am now going to start sweet spot base - low volume I.

I would recommend the Tacx Vortex Smart.

    Tacx Vortex Smart - £250 - can't go wrong. http://www.wiggle.co.uk/tacx-vortex-smart-trainer/
  • Completed Sweet Spot Base 1 before Christmas, had 2 weeks off (3 inc. the plan recovery week?) from the trainer but before the break completed SF Angels at 100% :D . Did a few fun/casual rides over the break but nothing tough, all felt really good. Then didn't hold back on festivities over Crimbo and now think they have come back to bite me :(

    Just had a second attempt at an FTP test ready for Base 2. I just can't maintain anything like what I was before, and nowhere near my Base 1 8min test; I'm prob 15%-20% down. Quads are burning and empty. I can't see any difference with my setup and 'run down tests' are ok. Heart rate is similar to previous test. So, either;

    i) I am fighting off the stinking cold that my other half is generously spluttering around the house, even though I feel completely fine, and should give myself a week off and not worry.
ii) The excessive food, booze and break has taken its toll and get my fat ar5e back on, accept my lower FTP and get working on it.

I think 'i' must be it as I just can't see my FTP dropping so much, any little extra weight shouldn't count for much on a trainer. Any thoughts? Anybody in a similar position after a Christmas excess-fest?

Top end can decline rapidly, 3 weeks off training is a long time in terms of wishing to maintain peak power.. it dont happen, buddy.
