  • Top end can decline rapidly, 3 weeks off training is a long time in terms of wishing to maintain peak power.. it dont happen, buddy.

We aren't talking about someone who is at top end or peak fitness here! This is base fitness. Trainerroad suggest you go back by the amount of time you have missed, which puts me at week 3 of the base 1 plan. Even then I am nowhere near these figures. My first FTP test was done after 6wks of relative inactivity so I'm struggling to see what has happened. I'm going to give it the weekend and then retest, and just accept whatever FTP I get and crack on (assuming I haven't come down with the cold!
  • You are not alone, my situation is a mirror image to yours. I'm doing a week of random sessions with the belief that i need to get my body back into the focus of training. So far they have been pretty manageable. I have a retest planned for next week.

When I've got a window open and a sufferfest video in the 'video area' of the screen with the data below and in 'video view' it seems to fit the window when the trianerroad window covers about 2/3 of the screen but when I it the little square to expand the view of the window across the whole screen the video doesn't seen to stretch with the screen.
    Any tips?

Completed Sweet Spot Base 1 before Christmas, had 2 weeks off (3 inc. the plan recovery week?) from the trainer but before the break completed SF Angels at 100% :D . Did a few fun/casual rides over the break but nothing tough, all felt really good. Then didn't hold back on festivities over Crimbo and now think they have come back to bite me :(

    Just had a second attempt at an FTP test ready for Base 2. I just can't maintain anything like what I was before, and nowhere near my Base 1 8min test; I'm prob 15%-20% down. Quads are burning and empty. I can't see any difference with my setup and 'run down tests' are ok. Heart rate is similar to previous test. So, either;

    i) I am fighting off the stinking cold that my other half is generously spluttering around the house, even though I feel completely fine, and should give myself a week off and not worry.
ii) The excessive food, booze and break has taken its toll and get my fat ar5e back on, accept my lower FTP and get working on it.

I think 'i' must be it as I just can't see my FTP dropping so much, any little extra weight shouldn't count for much on a trainer. Any thoughts? Anybody in a similar position after a Christmas excess-fest?

My experience is almost mirroring yours. Completed SSB but through illness and injury December and late November was one week on, one off. There's no way if I tested now I'd hit the FTP I took in October and the couple of sufferfest videos I've done since the New Year have been at 85%.

I'm tempted to start the base all over again, but retain my FTP score.

So about to start week 7 of the High Volume General Build plan and have to say I have found it great. Have pretty much stuck to the letter for each of the workouts with the exception of week 4 which was a rest week. Rather than doing the prescribed short endurance rides I took advantage of the pleasant weather and put some decent road miles in, with only a few of them being endurance or lower.

Anyway back to my point, week 7 has started and I'm really feeling it. Still think I can do the work but think its going to be harder than usual and my body is starting to ache... pretty much everywhere :D . Week 8 is a rest week, should I swap the two weeks round or try and power through?

Don't know if it matters any but I have a race a week on Saturday so would ideally like to hit this relatively fresh but with some decent work in the legs in the build up.

Sounds like the aspect ratio of your computer setting is not compatible with the video. Do you have a widescreen?

no just a standard Laptop 13"
  • A TR tech I was messaging with said the beta version is not far away from being full release and is pretty much the finished product.

That is dissapointing - I also dont see the interval details in TR after a Sufferfest interval. It normally pops up and shows your ahr and target FTP compared with actual FTP etc.

To be honest the only thing I have noticed with the Beta is that it saves the workout much quicker than it used to do, which is great. I dont see much else of real benefit though.

    It's not Beta anymore.

I've been out twice in 3 months, due to a new baby, gutting and refitting the kitchen and dining room (and working full time at the same time) then being ill before Christmas.

I got on the turbo and bloody hell, I have no power at all. I went out a couple of weeks ago and did a 37 mile loop that I can normally do around 2.05, it took me 2.25 and I was nearly 3mph slower!

I've treated myself to a new Garmin 520 and some Rapha shoes to get me motivated to get back into shape!

My ANT+ dongle arrived yesterday and signed up for Trainer Road. I'll just play with a few workouts until I pick a plan and get started properly.

My question is, how does Strava integration work? I connected TR with Strava before I did the ride and expected to see the workout pop up in Strava afterwards, but it wasn't there. Do I have to do something else?

    Cheers

  • Already done more time on the turbo this month than I did during the whole of last year. Did one of those workouts last night that looks a lot easier on the screen than it turns out to be in practice.

The last three intervals were tough but that final minute of the last one had me literally gasping for air. All good fun though.

As long as you've authorised with Strava it should appear as long as you've synced. Can you see the ride on the TrainerRoad website under the career tab?

Yes I can see the ride on my Career Tab.
  • I'd remove the authorisation and try again. These things aren't flawless, every now and again when my Garmin uploads to Connect it doesn't always sync with Strava.

Is the synchronisation one or two way? I just did my first Zwift ride which auto synched to my Strava but it didn't synch from Strava to Trainer road

One way. You can't sync a ride into TrainerRoad that you haven't done on TrainerRoad.

I'm guessing a few other people will have kicked off training plans in the new year, how is everyone getting along?!

I came straight back from about 6 weeks off over Christmas and New Year's (parties, travelling, family, blah blah blah) FTP tested at a very disappointing 185W, but feel the last two and a half weeks has done a lot to restore some of my missing strength and fitness. I'm now in week 3 of Sweet Spot Base (Mid-Volume, combined with plenty of swimming and running) and found Ericsson last night pretty easy so thinking about bumping my FTP up 5 or 10W and see how it goes.

Is anyone else on this plan and how did you find Ericsson in terms of RPE compared to say Mount Field or Monitor in the last couple of weeks?

I've not got to Ericsson yet.. a week behind you but attempting the sweet spot high volume plan. It's making me do more time than I normally would on there.
Looking at it I don't think it should be neither easy nor hard. Just an average workout.
The over-under intervals coming up may be more difficult. So you could play with the FTP or wait it out a few more sessions.

Yeah, looking at the numbers (%FTP for the intervals, overall TSS and IF) it doesn't seem as though it should have been any easier or harder than the two that I mentioned, but I found it pretty easy.

I've bumped my FTP up to 190 (+2.7%) and I'll see how Carson goes this evening.

I did the entire Sweet Spot Base low volume plan last January- March, in hindsight I made the mistake of bumping up workout intensity when they felt too easy. I suffered for it when moving to the General Build plan as the fatigue was real, soon realised that I had overreached myself and didn't finish. Spent a lot of the actual summer unable to face much cycling which spoiled it somewhat.

It's important to remember that the plans get progressively harder, the painful ones are coming, no need to reach for it when doing base training.

This time around I'm currently in week 4 of Sweet Spot base 2, knowing what's coming I'm not changing a thing. This week's threshold work is very challenging but achievable which I think is how it should be.
  • Hi everyone. I've just purchased my first smart trainer to use with trainerroad and pc. I noticed on the trainerroad site there is no mention of video card requirements. What sort of video card would you say would suffice? Thanks in advance.

Bog standard I imagine, if others can clarify? I run it on a terrible notebook.

I don't know why I thought trainerroad was similar to zwift so required a decent video card. Am I right in assuming there's no virtual cycling in trainerroad?

Correct, no virtual cycling. Just a couple of static blue blocks, timer, heart rate, cadence, power readouts and a slow moving yellow line.

You can embed video into the workouts (like Sufferfest) but I've never used this feature.

I did this and it now works fine. Ta.

If you think your FTP isn't right, you should do another test. The whole point is to have the workouts calibrated to your current FTP, so don't guess it!

  • I like Zwift but Trainerroad is where it is at for getting fit.
So I recreated some of the TrainerRoad workouts with the Zwift workout creator. I have to say it works quite well. I'm on week 3 of the general build and when you are doing the 130% FTP intervals it does help to have someone to focus on to pull you through. Even if it is just an avatar!

As long as you still have a TrainerRoad subscription.. I know that some folk have used one of the MRC to ZWO convertors to wholesale convert TR workouts for Zwift, and then distribute them - which is not on, not even close and basically theft. There was a thread about this on slowtwitch (and probably elsewhere) and unsurprisingly Nate was not very happy. Not saying you would, sounds like you just want have some background for your interval sessions (and it does work well), but thought i'd mention it in case anyone scans the thread and gets to thinking about anything more...
