  • I just saw an ad for the first time this lunchtime just before the Tour de France coverage started on ITV4.

looked a bit Gadget Show/Top Gear -esque. But I wasn't watching too closely as I was trying to avoid seeing/hearing Francis smashin' something again

Won't be long before some Commuter writes to broadcasting standards and gets it taken off the air then

"There was a girl in the traile for it.

Now theres a new one "Girls in Trailers" thread.

If Rob Hayles is in it then you can expect it to be very monotonous and boring.

It'll be 60% "commuter style", 30% fat MTBers and 10% high end road bikes a-la Gadget Show.

And it will be aimed at fair weather weekend warriors.

Bit like Top Gear, for bikes, I reckon.

    In a word, it'll be sh*t.

I seem to remember someone else did one a few years back (might have been ITV, but could just have easily been BBC or someone like Sky). I do remember it being complete crap that got cancelled very swiftly, if I'm not dreaming it entirely.

I recall this but no more than that. Maybe that's a good thing?

+1. A few years ago cycling couldn't have dreamt of it's current popularity. And the more people do it the more likely we are to get better road design and facilities. I see far more riders on the road these days.

    from somewhere I found this

"Broadcast Mondays 8pm, repeated Saturdays 5:30pm in HD. The Cycle Show is a light hearted chat show with pedal power themed features, where cycling and celebrities come together to take each other on at the Roller Sprint Challenge. From 'how to' and technical features to riding adventures and interviews with cycling legends, The Cycle Show looks at the lifestyle and fashion as well as the sport."

I think I'll let others watch it for me - it does sound a bit gadget-show-esque (i.e. appealing to exactly no audience). Tbh it's a lot easier to make an entertaining program with cars - and only one show has got that right in recent history, and even then only briefly.

What cycle show what you do? Personally, I'd say the best formula to ape would be Motorworld - I can see how interesting contrasting the cultures in China, Inda, Portland, NYC, London, Copenhagen, etc. would be. Alternatively, a half-hour look at Victoria Pendletone would suffice :D

edit: something else that will make it crap, I've only just realised but it is quite obvious. How badly does it bode for your show when the most imaginative name you can come up with is 'the [subject we are covering] show'?

If the Gadget Show appeals to "exactly no audience" then why has it been on our screens for years and pull in viewing figures of around 1 million?

Whilst I welcome a bike magazine programme I do wonder how it can keep fresh week in, week out.

I'll watch it, might be a bit rubbish but you gotta start somewhere.

Thing is, it's not really aimed at the likes of us. It's on ITV and it's probably aimed at the 'man in the street'. If it raises the awareness of cycling, if it gets a few people out of their cars and on a bike or even gets them to think about bikes for a bit then that's great.

Would be good if they did an article on 'Road Tax'

Well I'll definitely give it a shot, just hope Halfords isn't sponsoring it with those awful sponsorship ads.

I guess it saves a lot of time if you can make you're mind up about something, without actually seeing it.

There's a half hour long TV programme, on peak time viewing, on a near terrestrial channel, dedicated to cycling.

Get over yourselves chaps, 5 years ago you were probably all moaning that nobody took cycling seriously.

    They aren't! It's Chain Reaction.
It’s being produced by Century TV, who put together the Tour of Britain and, since 2006, The Halfords Tour Series for ITV4, and is sponsored by Chain Reaction Cycles.

    More like Top Gear apparently.
The Cycle Show is presented by Graham Little with support from former pro Rob Hayles and designer Anna Glowinski, will focus on the latest news, Top Gear-style challenges and technical features.

I'll give it a go, but I don't expect anything much from a half hour show minus 5-10 mins for adverts.

    Possible running order:

    1. Which bike should I get?

    2. What's your average speed?

    3. What's your average speed on a dual carriageway?

    4. Cycle shorts - pants or no pants?

    5. Etc.

I thought the Box Hill feature was OK, The commuting 'safety' feature dire but Gary Fisher was pretty cool.

I recorded it and tried to watch it, but gave up pretty quickly. It's a shame because I admire the idea, but think the execution was awful: far too much on the dedication and sacrifices of Tour riders, Graeme Obree needs subtitles, and if heard Nigel Mansell (of whom I had no idea was involved in cycling until much later) say awesome one more time I was going to throw myself on my multi-tool. Problem is they're going to try to please everyone, and in doing so will please no-one. And I thought the Box Hill feature was a stinker: no actual explanation of strategy, a badly voiced over commentary and poorly directed and shot. Am I just being really grumpy? Probably, but I won't be watching again.

Wasn't great was it? Obree is a true cycling legend but he really isn't a great TV guest whilst Mansell was as devoid of personality as ever and Gary Fisher didn't seem to know what was going on! It seemed that Wiggins win and the amount of time they spent on then condensed all the rest of the show - the safe riding section was particularly squeezed when it could have been genuinely useful to new cyclists. Add to that yet another London 'cycling cafe' full of poncy folk thinking they are cool walking around in cycling jerseys and casquettes (I saw the Rapha cafe on news coverage the previous day which was the same but I expected it there). Is this a London thing that they think it's cool to turn up looking like that? I had previously assumed it was just a cycle commuter and American thing to do!!

Very much agree with all of this.

I don't think it was just Obree's accent, but a combination of things, including his mannerisms.

Not all of us down south are as poncy as that lot in the background.

I rolled in this morning in a bit of a grumpy frame of mind and stuck this in our Rants thread. Still think it was dire.

The Cycle Show (ITV4 last nigth).

Juvenile puerile execrably crap attempt at being 'exciting', 'fun', 'with it', 'edgey'. A p!ss poor Top Gear impersonation that aimed low and missed by going even lower. If this had gone out on CBeebies it still would have under-estimated its audience.

Just how moronic do the producers & presenters think the average cyclist is? Wayne Hemmingway (let's crowbar a cycling Name into the show lads) appears in a piece on safety with his helmet on looking for all the world like a leprechaun after a night out and takes 2 minutes to help inform us that helmet & gloves are good, and that we should look around.

Rob Hales - how to ride up a hill. And down it again. No - you don't say. The odd looking bloke who's name I missed ends up on some kind of treadmill challenge. And the whole background atmos of having a noisy excited fun crowd in the background was so utterly bad as to be utterly bad. I hope next week's is better.

just watched it on itv player thingy. Nothing special and everything was too short but it's a new programme and it'll get better - good on them for at least trying.

And the cafe they filmed it in was 'look mum no hands!' on old street - a cafe dedicated to cycling. What the f*ck is there not to like? A CAFE DEDICATED TO CYCLING. Get over yourselves, people can wear what they want - you've been doing it for years!!

    moanyrant over ;)
  • First show, room for improvement, but let's not write it off yet. It has promise. Ok, some of the stuff (the safety bit) is going to be dull for seasoned cyclists, but if you can get through that (Sky+ the show and forward through the bits you think won't be of interest to you), other stuff will be interesting.

No idea why they had that mountain bike chap on there as he didn't seem to say anything? Rob Hayles needs to try and get a bit of life in his voice, he's so dull (same on Eurosport TdF coverage), but can actually provide some really good insight. Shame they didn't get Ned Boulting involved in some way. With Pendleton about to retire, maybe they could offer her the role of "eye candy" with the bonus that she understands cycling.

Let's not forget that they need to appeal to a wider audience than just bike nerds and there will inevitably be stuff of limited interest. I'm really looking forward to the Alpe d'Huez downhill segment next week.

I was in this cafe just last week, it's a cool hangout, but I did comment on Twitter about the percentage of the audience wearing casquettes in last night's show, I was embarrassed for them. Is this a London thing?
