only seen 1 show and was very confused and not by the mediocre reporting on bikes no one wants, and events that have already happened......

They do the interview in what can be described as a cafe

when he starts the interview, the "stand ins" sitting chatting are not listening to the presenter

but they turn round and clap / cheer when the guests name is announced

so are they eve-dropping on the cosy chat the guest and presenter are having, or are they meant to look like they are in a cafe not noticing the camera crew and steve pete, chris boardman ect..... but then following the runners instructions to applaud

the bike cafe talk is a nice feel but they try to pull it both ways... I blame the producer

We're unfortunately restricted by ITV broadcast regulations and the quality of video used.

The entire final episode of 'House' was shot on a Canon 5DII. What are you saying: that ITV demand better or worse than a prime-time US TV show?

Quote fail and reading the post fail. He was referring to youtube videos, of which many are recorded on camera phones and uploaded at 240p. These obviously wouldn't be suitable for features on an HD TV channel. And most people in Youtube land don't have several 5D MkIIs knocking around.
All the above is just advice .. you can do whatever the f*ck you wana do!

Describing it as a cafe would be a good start as that is exactly what it is

Rob Hayles needs a shot of adrenaline or two. His interview(struggling to call it that) was snore-worthy.

Put a bit of excitement into it ffs!

Fifth episode and only now is there a review of an actual bike.

    No gear testing/comparisons.

Very little workshop type content (unless you count changing a tube in CRC)

Nothing about nutrition (inc energy bars/gels/drinks)

    Nothing about sportives

    Nothing about racing

Nothing about touring or cycling holiday destinations

There's been plenty about pro racing - no amateur racing though (except the Brompton world champs). They did review folding bikes earlier on. The Stelvio thing was really a promo for Alpine cycling holidays. They covered the Ride with Brad sportive. Seriously, if ever there was a thread to confirm cyclists as a "negative community" its this one - moan moan, f***ing moan.

No, he needs putting out of his misery. Miserable bleeder. Hats off to his palmares and all that but who wants to listen to a boring expert who just can't seem to be fagged with the whole thing? I get the impression that he lost his zip for the sport some time ago but hasn't figured out how to do anything else yet.

    Hi all,

I look after the online side of things for TCS, book most of the guests and generally help out a bit. Other than the contracted days I work on the show, I am in not an employee of the production company (Century TV), Chain Reaction Cycles nor ITV. So my opinions are just based on my personal observations on the project and I could walk away from the show immediately if I wanted to.

I try and keep an eye on forum threads, this one was off my radar (no pun intended) though. I am sure there are a lot of excellent ideas and suggestions in here, however they seem to be lost amongst personal insults against people on the show and it makes it hard to look for the constructive ideas.

I will say this though, the show has always encouraged constructive feedback through Twitter and FB, those who chose to communicate in such a way will always have their views considered seriously and we will have a 2 way conversation with them.

The show is very much still finding its feet and there a lot of things the production team wanted to do with the show, which they haven't been able to due to logistical reasons. Just to get the show on TV was a huge achievement as, like it or not, TV broadcasters are nervous of putting cycling on TV as, believe it or not, cyclists tend to be a negative community.

This show was planned for 2013, but was pushed through a year early as ITV felt it was the best time as they (at the time) anticipated Wiggins' TdF success and that it was the right moment. Effectively this series has had a 6 week planning period for an 8 week run, which just ins't conducive to producing the show that was planned. Established shows with similar formats have 4 months to plan an upcoming series of a similar length, this with episode budgets which are bigger than our entire series.

If the ratings and support for the show are good, then we hope a bigger budget will follow and obviously a much longer planning period for a second series.

If you have genuine ideas for improvements (most of which we should have identified ourselves anyway) please let me know as I'll be popping back here, but if you want to insult people please keep it out of the public domain because it doesn't help us improve the show and certainly doesn't encourage broadcasters to put more cycling on TV when they already consider it a risk.

    Cheers,

    Stu

If this is the case you need to sack the show's researchers.

  • Based on the updates from stu with the planning and budget issues they have had to make do with I think it was Ok to watch , easy viewing but obviously in need of some energy put in to the show and some more enthusiasm.

I would like to see - hill climb of the week feature similar to the stelvio article maybe one here one abroad.

Local ride - work round the country with a cake stop thrown in and a garmin type link to it ?

How about an r'undercover' sportive rider with feedback from it?

Local racing feature working round the country , link it to the ride above.

How about a workshop feature from LBS mixed in with trip round the country ?

Just some suggestions that done well I would watch when you throw in some guest's that are TV friendly and know there stuff but come across well , if they don't then thats must be the job of the presenter to get the best out of them ?

Good Luck and hoping for a new improved series as if we can't get a decent cycling programme now we never will.

Anyone else got any more would like to see's?

Lol .. have you read this thread?

    :lol::lol:

I thought "negative commuinty" was some sort of advertising/media term for a demographic or something!

Didn't realise he just meant we're all a bunch of moany tw*ts! :D
  • A lot better this week, in particular thought the climbing of the stelvio with kristian house was excellent, and the bike review segment wasn't too bad either. More of these features and less of the other stuff please!

Ok. I watched this week's last night.

Riding the pass? Good. Multi-bike test rides? Good, but skimmed over too much detail. The mountain wheelchair? Worth a mention in passing but looked to me like a solution to a problem yet to exist.

I think the biggest issue with the show is that they spend too long talking about bikes with people who for whatever reason are unable to articulate their enthusiasm to any great degree, with the honourable exception of Ned. It needs more action, more excitement about it, more gadgets. Heck who doesn't like gadgets? Women mainly; so accept that instead of trying to do a BBC multi-inclusivity approach, sort out who you're trying to attract and attract them.

Take the road test - 8 bikes (was it?) yet no real detail about any of them; it was good but not great and needed more, not a close look at the g/sets and what tyres they're running but something more like TG would do with some enthusiastic panning & praising. Some of the bikes had electric gears. How about dwelling on this or do it as a separate feature? The whole question of electric gears generates a lot of opinion (we had a 15 page thread on Commuting about them) and there are plenty who don't see the benefit or maybe even don't know what electric gears are. Set up a for & against Di2 to explain it then, giving the programme a bit of that fake drama with a who will prevail?

It all needs livening up a bit, and bit less emphasis on sitting around talking about bikes by people who probably love bikes & biking but don't convey that well enough.

BTW I like Rob Hales as he is; he's excused boots on this criticism - he's got a good under-stated approach. Keep him on. Anna? Not being personal but I reckon the show would do well to do what TG after its first series; drop the third man, replace with someone better at it. I still reckon that same person - one James May - would be ideal for the prog. Dream world obviously, but he's my nomination to replace the lovely but not quite got it Anna.
  • Nice to read that someone involved in the show is listening.

I thought this week's show was the best so far, so am cautiously optimistic about the future.

General comment on the series - the guests need to be given a bit of context. Even a 60 second montage showing who they are / what they have achieved. Otherwise, its just another cycling bloke to many people.

^ This is absolutely spot on! I guess it costs to get hold of and show footage, but at least it gives you an idea of who the person being interviewed is. The Atherton lad: I know he's an amazing mountain biker (he is right?), but without any clips to show us how amazing he is he's just some dull, bored lad on a couch.

As for Rob Hayles: separated at birth?

Not so. TG is presented by three very affable & fun presenters

Apparently James May is exactly as nice as you'd imagine - LiT from the Commuter pages met him, said he was lovely

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Watched it with my wife, she liked the Stelvio bit but her comment on the road bike group testy; "this is sooo boring, how do they find anything to talk about? They all look practically the same!" Have to say, I was inclined to agree, there is really no need for that kind of feature to be on TV, far better suited to a magazine. General comment on the series - the guests need to be given a bit of context. Even a 60 second montage showing who they are / what they have achieved. Otherwise, its just another cycling bloke to many people. All in all though, I found it passed half an hour / an hour quite nicely, definitely had its moments and good luck for the next series.

+1. Stelvio feature - great scenery and a pro on hand to help us realise just how much stronger those guys are - pretty much guaranteed good telly. Climb of the week/pub of the week feature would be great.

Mountain trike was quite cool - the show needs off the wall stuff far more than it needs a test of several almost identical machines. This part should have been extended to do it justice, maybe as others have suggested some sort of silly race would be in order.

I'd love to see the instead of Dave Yate's workshop of Brompton's factory, come to think of it. Obviously there are confidentiality issues but seeing how this stuff is built as much as possible would be cool.

The last episode was a big improvement. For all the negativity, there are a lot of good suggestions on this thread. Keep it up.
  • In general I liked it.

Obviously it was no Top Gear, but it probably had a 1/5 of Top Gear's budget.

THe first three episodes were a bit awkward and low-rent, with alot of pieces that didn't really interest me that much, the last 3/4/5 episodes were much better though as things clicked in to place more. Loved having the Olympians on (Dani Rose and Lizzie Armitstead) and hearing their views on things.

Also a special mention for the last episode, thought it was awesome. Loved the Stelvio feature with Kristian House and seeing an 'average guy' in the presenter Graham Little climb the Stelvio, showing that anyone can do it if they train and believe.

I also thought the cycling shop/restaurant venue was a bit jarring, don't really know why, but it just felt wrong...think it would be better to be in a proper cycle workshop somewhere with an audience around the presenters/guests as in Top Gear too.

Overall though I was impressed that a show that had little planning, and a small budget managed to keep me pretty entertained/informed on a week-to-week basis, hoping it returns for a second series as 1 cycle show is better than no cycle show.

Agree with most of this, didn't mind the coffee shop at all.
