Chap sitting next to me has just recommended "The Killing" (Danish version, not the American remake). Anyone watched the first series?0

Veronese68 wrote:There was something about Homeland in one of the Sunday papers. Described it as the new 24. I think it said it was starting on C4 this month.
The terrorism angle is the only thing that really links 24 and Homeland. They're quite different really.0 -

Halfway through the first book. I imagine that the series is quite, erm, saucy?
Erm, yes. Boobs aplenty.
ha that is an understatement! not one to watch with the parents!0 -

Recently on the playlist and heartily recommened, both HBO:
Boardwalk Empire - fantastic viewing
Carnivale - pretty surreal...
As an aside, last night we watched Downfall. Wow - very, very intense. The scene with the kids and cyanide is almost unwatchable as a parent.0 -
The Thick of It starts again tonight. Can't wait to see their take on the coalition"Mummy Mummy, when will I grow up?"

If you watched & enjoyed season one, season two starts on Sept 30th (U.S.) & will be rebroadcast on Channel 4 a week later.
(Fills the time I have to wait for the conclusion of Breaking Bad quite neatly).Location: ciderspace0 -
I think the only box set I have is Californication Series 1 (the best) - I adored that programme and very original too.
My son (bizarrely, given all the treatment he's been through) has all of the House box sets. I love the characters in both of the series - they don't give a stuff but it's also dysfunctional.ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -
House Season 7 on its way from Amazon. We got pretty hooked on it. TV equivalent of Vicaden0

We Seem to be talking about TV box sets.
- Earth Story
- Pennies from Heaven
- I Claudius
- Porridge
Earth Story
Earth Story is in a league far beyond anything presented by pop presenters such as Iain Stewart or Brian Cox.
It explores both how the Earth works, and how our understanding of how the Earth works has evolved over the last two centuries.
The presenter, Aubrey Manning - a specialist in animal behaviour - has his own questions, but he lets the experts tell their own - compelling - stories.
Stories, which have sometimes changed paradigms [sic, Kuhn sense] within Geology.
"Oh No! That looks just like continental drift!" referring to a discovery that could overturn fifty years of geological dogma, and expose the scientists involved to scorn and ridicule.
Earth Story travels from James Hutton's (eightenth century) realisation of the "Abyss of Time", to contemporary maps of the mantle convection currents that drive the motion of the Continents.
It travels from the floor of Earth's oceans to Mars and Venus.
We discover that not only do geological events affect life, but for the last 3.5 billion years, life itself has transformed the geological dynamics of our planet.
If you ever, ever, consider buying any science series, you should buy this.
Pennies from Heaven
"I want to... I know it sounds daft Eileen, but I want to live in a world where the songs is..."
"Where the songs come true."
Dennis Potter got darker after that. I love The Singing Detective, but Blackeyes is too dark and too misogynistic for me.
I Claudius
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I,_Claudiu ... _series%29
"Go in peace. I was thinking about killing you, but I've changed my mind."
"As for being half-witted: well, what can I say, except that I have survived to middle age with half my wits, while thousands have died with all of theirs intact. Evidently, quality of wits is more important than quantity."
Perhaps we may still discover Claudius' own histories of his own times - for he was a historian, as well as an emperor.
Porridge.
Probably needs no introduction.
A Couple of Film Box Sets:
- Stanley Kubrick Collection
- "The Definitive Ealing Studios Collection" "16 Disc Collectors edition"
Kubrick
Kubrick didn't do crap films. Here we have Lolita, Dr Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyessy, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut.
"Gentlemen! You can't fight in here. This is the War Room!"
"Open the pod bay doors, HAL."
"I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that."
"Enjoying that are you my darlin'? Bit cold and pointless isn't it my lovely? What's happened to yours my little sister? "
Ealing Comedies.
Aaah. The gentle humour. I've seen The Titfield Thunderbolt about ten times more than any other film. Cos the kids liked it. And we've never got bored with it.
Among others, we have here: Kind Hearts and Coronets, Passport to Pimlico, The Lavender Hill Mob, The Ladykillers, Whiskey Galore.0 -

Season 2 can be slow going, there's lots of character development which isn't to everyone's taste but you can't have a full on gore fest every episode, it would be ruinously expensive. Season 3 (Part 1) has just finished on FX (Sky & Virgin) and it's freaking awesome, commentards would seem to agree generally.

i watched ep.2&3 of s.1 last night. Got to say I find it pretty scary. I'm a real wuss with horror genre and even after watching some giraffes having a fight afterwards it took me ages to get to sleep.0

Finished season 1 of The Shield.
Really enjoyed it. Good gritty action and some excellently dated outfits. Is it worth pushing on to season 2?
Got season 1 of The Killing next.
Then season 1 of Californication.
Then the mini-series of Battlestar Galactica.
I love having kids.0 -

Push all the way through The Shield. I've got them all and it's brilliant.
Mrs A watched it when it was broadcast but for some reason I didn't get into it. I picked it up at season 4 and had to buy the rest to catch up.Mud - Genesis Vapour CCX

Was it worth it? Oh yes! It just keeps building and building. I imagine that watching an episode on it's own would be entertaining enough but when you know all the back story, it is superb.None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.0 -
1. Star Trek: Enterprise. watched all 4 seasons while recoveing from surgery years ago
