I've only got 1 box set so it's my favourite.
    Star Wars trilogy on VHS.

Re: The Wire, reading David Simon's books "The Corner" and "Homicide" hugely increased my understanding and enjoyment of the series. In total, there are more than 2,000 pages of text, much capturing actual dialogue that was recycled into the programme. Made some of the slang more understandable for someone that didn't grow up in a Baltimore ghetto

    The Wire
    Sopranos
    West Wing
    Generation Kill
    Band of Brothers
24 (first few seasons, then it gets silly)
    Homeland (season 1 just finished)
    The Shield
    Breaking Bad
    Mad Men
Dexter (gets a bit tired after a few seasons but still good)
    Deadwood
    Battlestar
    Rome
    Forbrydelsen (The Killing, Danish)
    Game of Thrones
    John Adams

Oh dear, for someone that doesn't watch TV I've seen an awful lot.
Also seen the usual Lost, Heroes, House etc which are pretty disposable but entertaining

I can't bring myself to care about Boardwalk; characters don't have any depth for me, unlike The Wire, Sopranos, West Wing, Mad Men. And every time they show someone miserable or dying juxtaposed with 1920's music to reinforce the "and this is the American dream is it?" theme it makes me squirm. We got it, it's not subtle anymore. Sorry, I got lost on the way to the rants thread :D

Can't believe no one has mentioned Justified. Utterly fantastic TV, and perfectly cast.

Also Community. Been working my way through this and it's just brilliant. Short episodes, warm, funny, weird and again perfectly cast - Chevy Chase is in it FFS!

It really is, and repeat viewings pay off. Theres so much detail hidden in the episodes. In one episode they had a whole separate story line happening entirely in the background.

All of the recent series I've enjoyed have been listed, other than Glee, Burn Notice & True Blood, which are somewhat second rate to such. Fans of Damien Lewis may enjoy the sole season of "Life".

Really just posting to remark on lack of love shown so far here for "Spaced".

    The Wire, hands down.
I think The Sopranos is easier to get into, but overall The Wire is better.

Anyone who liked The Wire should check out Homicide: Life on the Street, David Simon's earlier work. I think it's better than The Wire.

Really loved Firefly too, and while I'm on the subject of Joss Whedon, Buffy was actually pretty good as a whole; anyone who's ever suffered the sudden death of someone close might well ...acknowledge... The Body -- the best portrayal of that experience and its utter disbelief and confusion that I've ever, ever seen.

The Sopranos is ok. Keep meaning to get a turbo set up and go through Sopranos, 24, The Wire (again), Homicide, Firefly, Buffy.

It's also the only way to watch TV shows...

I have had Band of Brothers for about 7 years; still haven't ever made it all the way through. I've tried watching it about 4 or 5 times, but it never grabs me, and I get bored a few episodes in. I've never seen The Sopranos, The Wire, or The Shield, and I might be missing out there.

Anyway, if I were to buy a box set today, it'd probably be one of these:

    The Inbetweeners - Series 1-3
The Alan Partridge Complete Box Set
Sharpe - The Complete Series (15 Disc Box Set)
    Boys from the Blackstuff
The New Statesman - The Complete Series Box Set
    Babylon 5
Firefly (although I already have that).

The X-Files season 1 and 2, before it went crap. Buffy & Angel (I only had S1 of each, but my 13-year-old daughter has bought the rest of Buffy and is currently on S3 of Angel).

    Or maybe something else :D

I've seen some of Underbelly, caught a few episodes of the various series when it aired on STV. The uncut version was always on when I came in from MTBing so I usually watched it. Kept forgetting it was on otherwise though so didn't see the full thing.

    It was quite good though.

Half way through Season 3 of Sons of Anarchy and its gone a bit silly... not an episode goes by without at least 3 characters meeting an unfeasibly tragic and gory ending.

Yeah, I'm with Eke. I thought The Wire was so good it basically makes all other TV a let down.

Oh, did no one mention "Weeds" first three series were excellent.

The Walking Dead had the exact opposite problem in season 2....

Underbelly is like the Sopranos with all of the wit and plot taken out, but with more tits.

    Its Australian. For Australian men.
