    The Oude Kwaremont

Is that the longish, not so steep, not the nicest of cobbles climb?

I think it was the first cobble climb when I did the sportive in 2010. Was a bit of a shock to the system, having never climbed on cobbles before and with well over 100k already in the legs. I think I cried a little.

Yeah, it's a sh!tfight to get there, it's steeper at the bottom, but it goes on for a long time. Flattens out at the top but with some hefty cobbles. Can expect someone like Cancellara who's followed up the first half to 'attack' or make a considerable gap in the second half.

Museeuw last night called the Oude Kwaremont the 'Cancellara berg'.

    Oh dear.

Edit: and Museeuw's ridden the new route (well, the last bit) 15 times apparently.

Has the Cipollini stunt got him thinking then?
  • I was fretting about being able to see this as I had it in my head it was on Saturday, when I'm having my sky system replaced with a Virgin package. Now I've got Sunday catered for. Hurrah!

Greipel out of Flanders to "preserve him" for the Scheldeprijs. (Possibly because Cav is now demoted to the reserve list for next Wednesday as the new baby's arrival is imminent)

Considering what a crap classics season Cav has had (KBK excepted) Griepel really hasn't managed to capitalise yet has he.

This is true. I think the tipping point might have been when Greipel attacked on a climb in KBK to drop Cav and only 8 guys could stay on his wheel. Including Cav.

Mind you, the season so far hasn't exactly been filled with big-bunch gallops.

True, he certainly couldn't have done anything at MSR, but the way that E3 and GW panned out he could have done something if he'd the legs and positioned himself right in the bunch.

Speaking of which, where is Rick this morning? He must have tired himself out with his flurry of posting yesterday, poor mite.

    Something like that.

Had an interview this morning and just finished a nice ride in the sun :).

My buzz has been slightly dulled because on closer inspection of the course, tactics excluded, I can't see past Cancellara.

It's looking so well poised. Cancellara, Boonen and Chavanel all look 100%. Devolder will definitely have a go somewhere. Pozzato, Breschel and Terpstra not looking bad as outsiders with form. Can Sagan last in a race like this? Some capable teams who have flown under the radar a bit: Sky (EBH, Flecha); BMC (v Avermaet, Ballan); Garmin (Vanmarcke, Haussler).

Head says it'll be between the first three. Heart says one or two of the outsiders will get in the mix as well. I'd love to see a Tommeke or Chavanel victory though.

I'd love to see Boonen win as well, but I just can't see past Spartacus.

I agree with Tusher.....basically. Hope I can stay awake after my MTB marathon that morning, it will need to be a good one!

  • Do you know what, I'm so sick of this. When did this thread start? 1st December! Bored with it all now. Rick dribbling on about the route. Will this rider win or that. What's the best preparation. What's the weather going to be like. Where's the best place to watch. What snacks should I eat during the coverage. Is there enough TV coverage. What will Mark Cavendish be doing on Sunday. Just utterly, totally bored with it all...

Ahh, just kiddin'. It's gonna be great!

    :D

(although Roubaix will be better, obviously...)

Forget about Boonen or Cancellara, more importantly, will 'Ronde Boy' make an appearance?

Gilbert did 170km on the route yesterday (150km on his own after dropping his teammates) and says the last three loops are "fierce"

    http://www.sporza.be/cm/sporza/wielrenn ... ng_Gilbert

I think Sunday could be as much about recovery as power. I think Chinny will really suffer from the lack of support in the last 60km, if the performance of Radioshack Nissan so far this spring is anything to go by. QS will probably aim to keep pulling rabbits out of the hat with the aim to force Chinny to continally chase and hopefully break him down.

So does that mean his teammates on did a 20km ride? Don't rate their chances on Sunday.

You may have inadvertently stumbled upon the reason that BMC have been pants this season. Or alternatively as Pip disappeared off into the distance, (to a multi-lingual chorus of "Who does he think he is?. Knob!"), the lads just turned back in search of beer and frites.

He was doing such a long ride because he'd dropped his 2011 form somewhere on the road and was trying to find it again.
