edit to add....Pokerface...massive respect fella, but does it really bother you that much? You know you earned the jersey.....why do you care what anyone else thinks?

Naw. I don't mind that much. If people out there want to wear the jersey and emulate me then who am I to complain!? 8)
  • ha ha indeed.....

Why can't we have a little bit of etiqeute ?
You make an effort to dress appropriately at a funeral unless told otherwise. Youb wouldn't turn up at a top game shoot in the Man U shirt. You wouldn't take your gran out in an obscene T shirt.
Its called respect for those you are with.
If you wish to show your support for a team or person , fair enough although I reckon it's best at an event and thus I would not wear team kit if not a member. Then again I reckon all those who wear footy strip or daft as well.
Each to your own but surely as adults we should be a touch above pretending and who care if you are a fan. Wear a WC shirt at a Cav event but surely we can rise above that schoolboy behaviuor on the roads.
Having said all that finding kit thats bright and attractive that isn't team kit is impossible. I love the lok of some kit but you cannot buy it.
Maybe old kit is ok, dunno there.
As to suggesting the Op's club is miserable, well just maybe they have a dress code, just like night club. I suspect, from the info provided that the individual in the WC kit isn't really a club person anyway. He doesn't seem to want to fit in.

We used to get this when I played ice hockey and people would turn up to training in the number 99 jersey. Some may know what I mean. It usually led to a great deal of bullying and eventually the wearer stopped using it.

In the case of the WC jersey, yeh it's a but bad that he wears it but at the end of the day at least we went cycling specific kit. What conversation would we be having if he'd turned up in a football shirt. End of the day he's gonna get to the point thus invoking n+1 which includes kit as well as bikes IMO, He'll stop wearing it eventually.

As for club kit, is there a rule saying he has to wear it?

Ah, see I solved that problem by moving to Holland, One day I ll move to the Alps and buy a green one

Matt, it's a sport club, not a private members club. That someone want to turn up and pay membership fees should be all the respect the club needs. Take him out on a ride and tear his legs off - but be prepared for him to tear yours off too!

This is nothing but slightly pathetic macho posturing from the OP It does nothing to help cycling. He's a cocky young kid with a lot to learn but he ll learn it in good time. Let's not pretend that we were nt all once cocky young kids too!

Pokerface is exempt, but, dude, you must appreciate that you re in a position most of us will ever be in, that is what makes it so special.

In case it isn't, who cares what anyone wears to ride their bike? It really would not bother me in the slightest. I'd say let him get on with it.

    This.

So many people getting carried away here. My local club dosent wear a team kit, and they wear what they want. We are talking about amatures here, Im pretty sure if someone was to buy a WC kit there not gonna walk about on there club ride like they just won the world championships lmao! They either love the graphics or the history of the jersey.

IF you can buy it you can wear it.

This was gonna be my point - instead of feeling annoyed that people are wearing the jersey, just feel proud that most people can only dream of being WC and want to emulate you 8)

  • Surely, it's actually a good idea for club newbies to be wearing such distinctive kit - that way the existing members can keep an eye out for them in case they not used to group riding, offer them advise and generally be welcoming to them (although not the OP I suspect)!

As a complete tangent, when I was 16 I had a job cooking in a small restaurant (nothing fancy). Mr. 99 and his wife (Janet) actually came in - and I prepared their food. Janet even popped her head into the kitchen to make some special requests.

As someone who grew up in Canada - it was a special day for me.
  • And, so what are "the rules" for wearing national champs attire, or former world/national champs team jersey with the bands around the end of the sleeves...

I have no problem with what people wear on their bike, it's their money after all. Plenty of them out there riding Boardmans with WC stripes on the bike! If a club doesn't have a dress policy then why get het up about it, my only thought on it is why join a club that has a policy of wearing club kit and then moan about it? Surely you should do your research on the club before riding with them, if it doesn't fit with your needs then find another that does. My club gets sponsorship and part of that is the REQUEST that we wear the kit on club rides (obviously when racing as well) which I think is fair enough, especially as we get the club top at half price because of the sponsors. I certainly wouldn't have a go at a rider with WC stripes on, they might be quicker than me anyway (Emma Pooley is a member of our club so she's can wear what she likes!)

On the first ride? Presumably you don't expect people to fork out for kit just to get started?

I think most 'real'cyclists think 'chump' when we see someone wearing inapropriate kit (I find the yellow or polke dot jerseys to be the worst) but the fact that the prevailing seniment here is live and let live and at least they're cycling, is to be applauded. We should be like this with all aspects of cycling!

No, of course not. New riders often ride for at least 6 rides before they are even passed an application form. We even hold open club rides for new riders who might be interested. I have never even heard anyone being asked not to wear other jerseys and it hasn't been brought up at club meetings so a pretty relaxed attitude to it. TBH we get a lot of people joining because they like the club kit anyway.
  • I wouldn't wear a champions jersey or KOTM or Yellow, just 'cos I know some people would see it as I do (a challenge to stomp them into the ground) and I know I'm not good enough to avoid being stomped on. But if others want to it's up to them. (Although I will try to stomp on them, if I think I've got a chance) :D

sorry to ask, but can you please describe a "real cyclist". I have been riding now for 3 years and consider myself an enthusiast, but i also have a yellow jersey that i sometimes wear during the hot summer days......I just want to ensure i'm conforming to the "real cyclists" handbook!

I doubt it - I'd like to think that most 'real' cyclists aren't that feeble minded to care what anyone else wears. It doesn't matter. Everytime I see someone in Astana kit I just think 'cool, I'll scalp Armstrong' - why would I think that the rider is a chump though? I don't know him. All I know is that a) he is a cyclist and b) he probably likes Lance.

God, I worded that wrongly! I was trying to say it's cool to wear what you like, I just think most 'real' (and I put it like that cos i knew I was opening a can of worms!) would draw the line at wearing a yellow jersey or WC jersey. i never said anything about Astana! If it gets bums on bikes, wear what the heck you like IMO.

Last time I checked - I was a real cyclist - and I couldnt care less what other cyclists wear.
Yellow, polka dot, be my guest. I just like to see people actually enjoying themselves on bikes.
    Whatever top they are in.
