The big LIGHTS thread 2011-2014

Wow - this thread is so much more manageable now it is rerstarted!
Talk me out of just going with this UK ebay supplier and getting 2 of these - 1 for the bars, and 1 head mounted. Recons lasts 3 hours.: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CREE-XML-XM-L ... 33&afsrc=1
What benefits would say 3 torches have over this set up? eg 2 for the bars 1 for the head. Can't see much difference in price when batteries, charger and mounts are bought......0 -
I need to retract that recommendation, the seller is located in china and has hardly any feedback. I'd be very surprised if it ships in under 3 weeks.0
-
I'd agree, only downside is probably maintenance. The packaged lights are harder to fix if they go wrong. But it will produce more light and run for longer + you don't have the annoying strobe and SOS modes.
XM-L seems to work best in a small head (from a beam perspective). The beam comes out fairly narrow, so needs a small head to reflect. It doesn't seem to touch the sides so to speak in the larger heads.
I'd be tempted to go with a lens rather than a diffuser.0 -

This lens you talk of - where would I find one?
I also note that ebay seller has limited feedback but it does say items based in London. I have asked them a direst question so shall wait and see.
I have priced a DX shopping cart for 3 510 lumen torches and all the associated equip and it id roughly £60 so very little in it. But the mention of the complete ebay kits being a bit too focussed in their beam is making me think one of them and a couple of torches may be a better bet.......0 -
I have ordered one of these to see what it does.

Just a trivia question. How did the batteries get their names eg 18650 , 16340 ,10440 etc (i do know the answer)kendoddsdadsdogsdead0

because of its dimension ?0

If somebody wants to put together a UK only set up then I would be happy to add it to the FAQ.0
-
UK bases suppliers for all the kit needed ie torches, cells etc.0

As said in my earlier post I asked this ebay supplier if his product was really UK dispatched. He said it was and would be with me in 3-5 business days.
He does however mention in his description that he is a long standing trader, but seems to have only 3 feedbacks starting in October this year.......
I am considering having a bash anyway using paypal as this light is only £5 more expensive than straight from hong Kong via snail mail.
I shall see how the spot/spread of the ligh is then decide whether to back up using another one of them with possibly the wide angled lens or go the torch route and head mount....
Just need to mull over the options.0 -
Hmmm, he says 1-2 business days, then 5-7, then this:We are an experienced Shen Zhen based internet seller who has been successfully selling in eBay for many years.
andThe returning shipping cost will be your expenses by Registered Airmail.
andA small parcel would be less likely imposed taxes or duties by customs. Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility.
Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding/buying.0 -
Which is why I pulled my recommendation.
By the time you have faffed about your light will have arrived from HK
Sticky UK SELLER. Charger0 -
^^^^^ yes I spotted that too. PayPal is protected though isn't it? Perhaps I should just take the longer hong kong postal option.0
-
Last time I got stung by an ebay scammer it took ebay 2 months to refund me.
The reality is your item will probably arrive late by the time you dispute and you wont get a refund.
Spotted this on ebay 2 XPE 1 XM-L - micky mouse magic shine type light for 30 quid.

Here is my Deal Extreme shopping cart. I would be glad on peoples thoughts as I plan to order tomorrow and although I think I have plucked out all the best advice I would hate to place my order and have someone go "oh, you should have got....". The idea is to have a bar mounted magic shine type complete kit with a torch mounted to helmet. I will then have a spare torch for either the bars or to place 2 on the helmet. Spare batteries for each. I would hope this provides a monster amount of light that could be used over a 2+ hour ride. Any reason not to pull the trigger or change my order? Total cost £78.63.
1 x 1200 lumen complete light kit: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/t6-waterpr ... -set-82510
2 x 510 lumen torch: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/ultrafire- ... 8650-55241
2 x pairs of 18650 battery: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/trustfire- ... -blue-5790
1 x charger: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/digital-li ... arger-6105
1 x plug adapter: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/universal- ... -plug-2709
1 x plastic battery case for storage: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/ultrafire- ... pack-26310
2 x handle bar mounts: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/universal- ... -8mm-15342
With a bit of luck I will be going out on a night ride in a few weeks - if a bit scared on my own till I convince friends to invest :oops:0 -
i have taken some pictures of the torches i have received but not sure how to load up pictures. if somebody could pm me their email address perhaps they could post my findings with 2 different XLM lights and also a different lens in.

this is the mount i use
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/universal- ... able-15642
no clamps to spring open, all screw mounted.
NIL1121, RE PICS,
have you uploaded them to some where like flickr or photo bucket first ?
I find photo bucket easiest , just click on the img code then paste it in to your message0 -
ordered 2 of these on thursday and arrived today
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110724230442? ... 1497.l26490 -
ok, never used photobucket but will try first thing tomorrow morning as its my bedtime
have to get up at 4am each morning.0 -
first picture is this one which took 3 days to be delivered from UK
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110724230442? ... 99&afsrc=1
and looks like this http://i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m54 ... de510L.jpg
second picture is one of these with lense as it comes and took 3 weeks for delivery
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170692029675? ... 43&afsrc=1
and looks like this http://i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m54 ... 61200L.jpg
i then purchased one of these from the USA but only took 3 days to come and put it on the CREE LAMP 1200 LUM and you get either of the following pictures depending on the angle you put the lense in
http://i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m54 ... Dlens2.jpg
http://i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m54 ... Dlens1.jpg
the pictures dont really show how much light the torches/lamps give out (which is far greater than shown) but hope it helps0
