Yeah it's rare that you can get a decent run there as there's often a queue of traffic towards the end - not to mention the buses as you say. And since creating that segment I've been stopped at one of the sets of lights every time! Occasionally though a quick run is the most sensible option, if I can I'll get into primary position on the outside lane to avoid being close to the buses, and if I'm occupying the lane it's only fair to those behind me to give it some welly.0

Yeah, that was me. I was frustrated at not having my segment recorded. Missed lots of segments on the plod in this morning but bizarrely hit several new ones that I thought would've been on there and put poor times in on them. My phone's GPS is pretty pants and goes haywire around tall buildings, recording me at 60mph somewhere parallel to Millbank but about 100m further east, ie smack bang in the middle of the river.
There're some sections on my commute that I just don't bother with as they're dangerous. Millbank Sprint (East) is a poor segment, involving crossing the pretty lethal roundabout by Lambeth Bridge then the section up towards PS which has several ped crossings/zebras/taxis/buses and an awful road surface. Even when it's clear I find it hard to maintain any speed into the roundabout because cars and peds appear from nowhere."Mummy Mummy, when will I grow up?"

Flying start on the Jamaica Road sprint spoiled by iights going red & Tower Bridge too full of traffic
In other news, KOM'd the Col du Molesworth last night but that is a tricky bit of road with the amount of traffic & I had to back off at the end when a bus moved out and blocked the gap...
Likewise on Evelyn St, also got slightly held up by a car turning left on to Canal Approach. Currently 6th but there's more to come there.
Went in via Blackheath, so had a go on the Lee Road climb - got held up by the temporary traffic lights and came in 9th, but again room for improvement.
Tower Bridge busy as you said (isn't it always at that time?) and wasn't aware of the Jamaica sprint segments, will check it out!0 -
I run a PowerTap to commute on - it's the bulk of my training, may as well do it properly :-)
That is pretty cool - new on me. Gonna set that up later.0 -
THe new Segment Explorer is pretty handy for this.
I can see 2 segments:
Millbank South but this is a little messed up as the altitude is apparently at over 200 feet, climbing to 250 and then back down. :?:
Millbank Sprint (Southbound) which ends about 20m to late.
JZed, if there's another, let me know or I'll create a SCR Millbank South segment.FCN3: Titanium Qoroz.0 -
Wrath Rob, that's my bloody Android for you Tried editing it to fix the altitude but while I can change the start/end point, I can't fix the height. Still it seems to pick people up?"Mummy Mummy, when will I grow up?"

Right, SCR Millbank Sprint - South has now been created. Starts just after the zebra crossing and finishes opposite the Morpeth. Altitude is still FUBARd but I don't think that's an issue. Monday's SCRIT session is now showing as my fastest time so I think the issues have been resolved.FCN3: Titanium Qoroz.0 -

A couple of my segments this morning were nigh on motorbike speed, maybe Doug's just really fast?0

Cheers Ron, looks like a much more logical start/end given the junction at that end. I was considering suggesting the 'peth as an end point but thought that may be a little too short but I guess it does have a special significance for us :-)
Now you can play I-Spy the Strava riders on a Friday evening by spotting the riders who come tanking along then sit-up shortly after they pass the pub :-D0 -

If he is a cyclist then he's an extremely fast one. Take a look at the speed profile on this

36mph up East hill - not a chance in hell. 44mph on the incline up Wandsworth Road after Queenstown road
Time to google the bloke as if he can hit these speeds he'll race.0 -

You've only done that to remove me from the segment as I was kicking your behinds. Three rides down there, none picked up."Mummy Mummy, when will I grow up?"

You need a garmin - all your times are invalid as your phone is inaccurate and therefore the time stamps for start and finish of segements is not verifiable. I'll exclude you from the tables until garmin is present. :twisted:0 -
To be honest the whole thing is a bit screwy with short segments. Look at the fastest from Ed Francis on the old Millbank South : http://app.strava.com/segments/763139 - he doesn't even approach his 'average' speed through the segment. That being said I'm sure with a decent tailwind and no/favourable traffic someone could hold 34mph through there."Mummy Mummy, when will I grow up?"
"Don't be silly son, you're a bloke, you'll never grow up"0 -
Looking at his segment it is cut slightly short - it doesn;t start at the roundabout or finish at the lights. So it times in between his start and finsih and then decides he rode the whole distance?0

Its not about the legs...
Seriously, legs felt leaden this morning. Had a fairly clear start so hit it at reasonable speed, I then blew up half way along, before the set of lights in the middle in fact, just got through those on amber so thought I may as well keep going but was back in the saddle, then saw lights at the end at green so put in a final burst. Pretty patchy form, but getting a clean run makes the world of difference. Had the exact same thing on London Bridge northbound as well.0 -
JonGinge wrote:I don't doubt that Ed is capable of that time, though
He is - but Keyser does have a point though - he averages plus 30 when his speed hardly hits 30.
There are a few similar results on Col du Chutney (including one of my own http://app.strava.com/rides/1996275#32868703 although mine isn't too far off)- one at 60mph beacuse of gps jumps.0 -

This level of inaccuracy just isn't acceptable! What we need is a London wide network of the electric timing mats like they use on sportives ;-) Everyone can then get a nice discrete tag to put on their bikes and hey presto accurate timing figures without people being accused of jumping in the Thames or beating the speed of sound through BF's
I'm sure if we put a good case to TFL and mentioned "smoothing traffic flow" they'd buy in.......0 -
Interestingly there is a network of pressure pads under some of the main arterial roads (A501, A1, A11 etc) which sense buses passing over. I'm not sure if they can identify each bus but are used to work out average speeds over those segments. Maybe they could be adapted?1997 Gary Fisher Big Sur

Rubbish ride home, hold-up after hold-up, but did get a nice clean run at Brookmill, including an all-important green at the start. Gave it beans, but only came up 4th on the leaderboard - a whopping 12 secs off JamesFree's time. I reckon I can squeeze out a few more secs if I really don't leave anything in the tank, but top spot is well out of reach methinks. I wasn't using the bottom cog as atm when I do it falls off, but tbh I'm not sure it'd actually make much difference.0

Left 5mins late so took the short route in. Couldn't really be arsed. That changed the moment I got going
Weather lovely. Cold but not too cold. Traffic light.
Scooter duly drafted at 28 and then passed at 30. Twice. Reached Blackfriars and a gent in a truck pulled up along side and told me I'd kept up with him all the way from Clapham and was entertained by the scooter scalpage 8) 8)
Gotta be a 20+ moving ave. Will find out when I get home. Still grinning.
Well for all the bluster it was a 19mph moving average (I don't get that - it was 18.5 overall) and only a 2nd place Stockwell to Oval. A certain Flying Bogey has the KOM by a second, though in my defence it looks like he had a rolling start and a green light at the end where I had a standing start and a red light to slow for :evil:0 -

Ah, I see I'm currently sitting in third here... My time was with a relatively slow rolling start, a red at the end and if I remember correctly I got stuck behind a bus at the pinch point shortly before oval. Can definitely do better!Ribble Audax - FCN 5
