What the hell can go wrong with a BB after 60 miles?

Hi, I think you'll find that it is a standard 68mm BSA bottom bracket that currently has a square taper BB fitted. Fitting a 105 groupset will pose little problem and will improve the bike considerably.

I'm not sure what you mean by what else you need go buy as a groupset has all the components including chainset, drivetrains, brakes and levers.

Will I need any special tools to install or remove the BB?

And thanks, I thought it would be possible to swap.
  • If it's the 2014 CX with the square taper BB then you need a crank puller, a splined bottom bracket tool for square taper BBs and a hollowtech 2 bottom bracket tool. You can get all in a cheap tool kit like IceToolz or you could get Park Tools which are the best. I have used both and they both get the job done except the Park Tools will do the task many times over. Check YouTube for videos on how to do everything. I taught myself everything from experience and the internet so this shouldn't be an issue if you have some coordination.

FINALLY picking my 2013 CX up tonight.

Quite happy with the deal i ended up with.

£719.99 less 10% Discount, less another 10% discount (British Cycling), plus £50 of free accessories.

Not gonna argue with that price !

So you got the cx team for £579.00 when it retails for £899.00, that is a huge bargain, I got mine for £810.00, but should cost me less as I got it through cycle to work.

    Yup!

Partly due to it not being the current model (i requested a 2013 model), and partly due to it being a 'display' model (mint condition though), less the discounts.

    HAPPY BUNNY!

Got 20% off mine using the discounted vouchers by 10% and another 10 from the bc card. 2014 cx team.

Mine had to go back as the little cam adjuster on the right side gear lever was missing causing the leaver to throw forwards and to the left of the brake lever.

If you put the bike into one of the middle cogs at the back, when you look down at the chain line, the bottom of the jockey wheel cage is bending outwards a bit. I've see this on the demo bike in the shop as well. Why is this, is this normal?

Can anyone else have a look at theirs and let me know if it's the same?

So having sent the cx team back for a new rh shifter, the paddle adjust cam was missing, the bb now is creaking like mad! I've only done about 50 miles on and off road, anyone else had bb problems?

Pretty sure I need to replace the BB5's on my CX team (current model). Was in Kielder this weekend and the brakes just don't cut it off road - so much so that I crashed unfortunately :-(

Are those who've changed brakes still of the opinion the BB7's are the best replacement or has anyone tried the TRP Hy/Rd?

I have changed the BB5 brakes to BB7 about 18months ago, that was worth it just for the ease of setting them up, I was forever having to adjust the BB5's. Braking power was about the same. I have replaced the front BB7 for a TRP HyRd. Very easy to set up and now I shouldn't have to adjust it again until the pads wear out due to the hydraulic pad centering. Braking power at the front has increased with less force required on the levers also, also very good modulation. I have always favored the interrupter levers for the big downhill sections because they generate more power for less effort, but with the HyRd fitted I know feel they could finally be removed as the shifter braking is very much improved.

Thanks tincaman - that's the same setup I've been considering, just the cost that's a little offputting as I'd quite like some wheels and tyres too!

I have put a BB7 on the front and it is loads better but the consensus from those I have spoken to is that the TRPs are better as fit and forget but not much better for modulation or braking (or certainly not so much that it is worth the exorbitant price). Also good luck finding the TRPs in stock. BB7s are fine really.

Put BB7 front and rear on mine. They are much better than the BB5, bigger pads for more contact with the disc plus easier to adjust. They can stop my 19stones when flying down steep Welsh hills so no lack of stopping power. Can't speak for the TRPs but I don't feel any need to upgrade.

The time has come - Halfords have admitted that I have a dodgy BB and the frame is shot and they are will to give me a new CX in replacement - this years not the 2012 that i have

Question: Im 5,11 (182cm) and currently have a large but often wished I'd gone smaller and got a Medium, Im comfy on the large but sat on a friends medium and liked the feel - I commute most days on canal towpaths and road (30 miles) and do CX through the winter- whats your thoughts???? Med or Large?

I'm 5ft 11" and ride a medium. My inside leg is 31"-32" so fairly normal upper lower body proportions. Perfect size for me. Remember the CX has a longer top tube than average. The bike I race on is a 55cm and the medium Boardman is fairly similar to that.

Have a word with the staff as there are still a few 2012 models around.

Poole have one, Gosport have one, Grennock have one and Ashton (Manchester) have one.

If you have good staff in the local they will arrange for it to be transferred.

My 2012/13 CX came with the correct front wheel, but the rear wheel is off the current model.

The staff at my local are shipping another bike to store to get me the correct wheel (Ritchey OCR), or have given me the choice of a set of 2014 wheels. Which is the better option?

I also ditched the BB5's and put some TRP Spyre's on there. Very easy to set up. Got one of our field staff to call and collect 2 sets from Merlin for me as they were passing and ended up being given the Spyre SLC's (Carbon) set for the price of the standard set - someone is going to get there ear chewed at Merlin i think!

Finally fitted the BB7 Sl's I got a few months ago (absolute bargain from Pro's closet in the US via Ebay) nice and simple to set up and much improved feel (but have removed interuptor brakes and used Shimano BC9000 cables, so I would expect to see a big improvement even with BB5's) still not as good as the hydro brakes on the hybrid but they look promising, will wait until fully bedded in before passing judgement.

Really pleased with the CX so far. Got a 107 mile jaunt next weekend so we will see how I feel after that.

    Re brakes.
Most of you/us compare the BB7 after swapping from the BB5.
I have BB5 on the CX and BB7 on the Planet X and can happily say they BB7 are so much better and are worth upgrading to when I get round to it if you can't find the TRP.

    LOVING this bike.

The fact that i don't have to stick to the roads if i don't feel like it is great. Speed wise, even with the OEM tyres on there my speeds are not far off my old road speeds, and faster downhill due to the superb brakes (TRP Spyre SLC's)

Not got round to putting the gator skins on yet as Halfords are still trying to source me a Ritchey Wheel

Suicide levers came off at weekend, and re-cabled the brakes, which made a huge difference as well.

Just need the legs to improve now as its been a while!

    No problem,

If you're near Stalybridge, feel free to pop over for a test ride of a 'large', or depending where in Derbyshire you are i may end up passing on one of my rides.

BTW, i know the Ashton branch has a 2013 Large CX in stock. Halfords CS were a bit eager and sourced two for me. The one in Ashton is a Large 2012/2013 model, but has the Mavic Wheelset on from the 2014 model. Pricing on it is approx £700 less discounts for it being a display model, plus BC discounts and whatever you can haggle from them.

Well my chain broke as I was riding at the weekend, probably my fault as I took the chain of a few months ago to clean it and may have not but it back 100%. Anyway today I got new chain this time a sram one only £14.00 and came with 2 power links, looking at the old chain it was 112 link long these sram ones are 114 new, I checked the sram one at 114 links and it seems OK at this length, i.e. small front and back and the chain isn't drooping and touching the jockey wheel, not sure if the original chain was to short or I have put this one on slightly to big, anyway if it shifts bad will take a link off.

Yeah rear mech is wifli, the SRAM 1030 chain came with 114 links. my other bike has shimano and for some reason they come with 116 links, so I think I removed 4 links, but the biggest cog at rear is 30.
