you reckon that's all? I changed from a Deore to XT cassette on the 'hopper and remember thinking at the time how much lighter it seemed. Weighed the 11-34 XT that went on the Votec and it came in at 313g (dunno how much the Deore is - also an 11-34 - it's on the Sanp now)

The Torque looked good though - before you destroyed it!

  • Ahh well thats good to know! I just plucked a number out of the air tbh lol!
Will be ordering my ti spring this afternoon which should lose about half a lb.

Its actually nearly back together lol... just I need to route the brake under the pivot so can't put it back together until then :(

I have the same fork on the Votec - when I have the compression set correctly (for the correct SAG) which is only 2-3 clicks off minimum, I get what sounds/feels like a topping out (?) knock when I lift the front end. If I dial in another 3-4 clicks of compression this stops but then I'm obviously not riding at the correct SAG. Rebound doesn't seem to effect this either. Is it service time or is this normal for this fork?

  • Hmm... not too sure, dont think mine knocks but I can somethimes hear the spring rattling around.
I did have an issue with the retaining bolt at the bottom of the leg, if thats not done up then the internals will knock around a bit, worth checking!

But a service is so easy on the Domain, can be done easily in 45 mins!

bought them used and the guy said he'd 'just had them serviced by TFTuned' they do have a sticker on them but who knows when they could've been done. Hmmm..maybe I'll buy a seal kit and give them a once over. Will check that retaining bolt. Cheers

(I'm off, gotta date with a mountain  )

Full service on Domains including damper service is really easy.
Domains do make a little noise, a steel spring inside a steel tube will never be silent. If the top out is harsh try another click of rebound. Also the compression adjustment isn't the right way to set sag. You need to set that using the right weight spring and preload spacers. The compression adjuster controls the speed that the fork compresses. I was told by TF that the compression adjuster on Domains is a little crude and needs to be set at or near minimum unless you are just huckung off cliffs.
They are the most bombproof forks.
  • Yeah I agree, set the sag using the spring and then dial the compression. I only use about 5 clicks of compression damping, any more and it starts to get a bit harsh on smaller repetitive hits.
But yup, bombproof and do exactly what they say on the tin!

One of the best forks I have had. My Boxxers start getting a bit rough if I don't service them every few months, much more high maintenance than my old Domains.

...funnily enough I rode today with 4-5 clicks of compression and they felt super plush - as usual - but no topping out knocking at all. I'd also speeded up the rebound by a couple of clicks - so not sure which of these helped, maybe the combination of both? Will do some more experimenting. But I'm well impressed with the fork - especially for £150

  • Finally I have the big girl back. Soooo happy!

The rear pivots are now butter smooth, just hope I haven't put anything in wrong lol!
Indexed the gears just before it started pissing it down, so its 1st outing will be an uplift at BPW tomorrow morning.

    So, things done:
    - Headset fixed under warranty by Works Components (who have been utterly superb about the whole thing), all damaged bits replaced and all refitted. I'm 100% sure the LBS fucked up the install last time. I put it in myself this time (found my headset press in the shed thank fark) and it feels so much smoother than it did before. No idea what they had done.
    - Rear brake cable changed. It had a kink in it so really needed doing. Took it to a different LBS as I didn't have time, but wish I'd done it myself as I think I got well and truly shafted on the price
    - All pivot bearings removed and replaced.
    - Everything has been cleaned (with a toothbrush for some bits!) and lubed accordingly.
    - New XT cassette and chain fitted.
    - New gear cable inner and outer front and back.

Ti spring is on order from http://www.ti-springs.com and I'm still in 2 minds about a new set of wheels. The superstars may weigh 2200g, but they're bloody bombproof!

Bring on tomorrow, I just hope its not too wet

    Nice pic
  • Cheers!

Had my 1st few runs on Enter the Dragon this weekend (only ridden Dai Hard last time), really really fun track with nothing very technical apart from the pro-line (which I didn't hit of course!). Only problem was the water/mud and how cut up the lower section was, one of the landings was into about 2 inches of mud and just stopped you dead.
Can't wait to ride it next summer!

Enter the dragon is just about having the balls to hold speed in to the jumps. Get the ones before the tables right and it's all good.
Have you done Zut Alores and the finsh jumps? They are fun!
  • I don't think I rode it this time, but did last time. Veeerrry fun!
I like Deep Navigation down at the lower bit. The rocks give the suspension a good workout, tis the only bit of trail I've managed to destroy a mech hanger on.

I know I'm only 25mins away, but have only been twice since it opened so still finding my way around the place and keep getting lost. I'm just not really a huuuge fan of the "Bike Park" idea....yet.

I'm mostly not a fan of booking uplifts two months in advance.
  • Another BPW trip and another photo.
    BPW16112013copy_zpsc5dec939.jpg

Was showing a noob around so taking it quite easy, but was the 1st time I'd done the climb which isn't actually that bad, just very very boring.
Biggest issue is that my front mech screwed up in the morning so I had to bodge a single ring to be able to ride. 36T up front and a 39lb+ bikes was tough on the climbs, but I loved it!

So much so, I've ordered a 34T Works Components chainring and will be converting it fully once it arrives.

I was watching a few youtube vids of BPW last night (mainly the blue runs). I'm definitely gonna have a weekend down there after winter (know someone who lives not too far away and can stay at their house). Sixtapod into Willy Waver looks damn good fun.
  • Yeah tis good fun... but I'm bored of it now

After a few trips, its become really monotonous so I'll be going back to some off piste stuff on the Canyon and Afan/Cwmcarn on the Spesh as they're much more fun.
Not saying I won't be back (I would say I'd be back if the weather is bad,as man made stuff usually stands up pretty well, but BWP is shocking in the wet!), but I doubt it'll be anytime soon!

Is your mech clutch? Do you need a chain device if your're using a narrow wide chain ring?
  • No clutch, tis a 9sp Saint. I'm just running a bottom roller as a chain device to keep the chain taught, but I reckon I could lose a few links and get rid of the guide and be fine.

Didn't drop the chain once at Cwmcarn on the weekend.
  • Pic from todays ride. Took a sheep/farmers track up to the last descent of the new Cafall trail then headed over the the last descent of the Twrch. Great day out, bike still superb!

No uplift, just a ride up and down. About 12.5km in the end I think.

    Nice bike!

How long did it take you to ride up to the top of BPW?
  • Took about 40 mins bottom to top according to Strava.

I did 1 full climb to the top, rode a top section of trail, rode back to the top and did a full run.
Total ride time was just over an hour so bugger all reward for all the effort going up.

BPW was completely dead though. 1st dry weekend too!

Thing is, BPW is rubbish if youre not on an uplift. The climb is uninspiring/boring and the descents arent good enough to want to go back up. Plus its £5 for a day, cant pay for a few hours.

Plus with the new trails at Cwmcarn and Afan with cheaper parking and similar facilities, locals dont seem as bothered about BPW anymore.
Cwmcarn was packed this weekend by all accounts!

That was my worry.. By the time you get up it's not redeemed by the downs..

If I went I'd like to get 3 runs in but I think I'd have lost interest by the prospect of a third climb up
And I really can't be bothered to book an uplift months in advance and pay a fair bit.. Even if the downs are really good, and they do look it

I'm really temped to try Afan and Cwmcarn, can you ride them both fine on your burly Canyon? Because my Transition isn't the lightest machine
