there is better riding to be had up there0

Couple of pics....
This one is from last Tuesday, went for a ride with Tom.. He's got a Nerve AM. Did a bit of the Twrch XC then jumped on the DH.
Makes you realise the actual difference between a 150mm AM bike and a 180mm FR bike lol.
Cheesy pic and post ride clean from Sunday.
Got round some of the Twrch and stumbled across a lass on a supermarket special Reebok FS picking herself out of a tree/bush.... She was struggling a bit so I did the good thing and waited up before most of the descents so she knew what was coming lol.
Unsurprisingly, the Reebok was actually heavier than my Canyon (or at least felt it!).
Also jumped on a couple of uplifts, hopefully The Mighty Ray Gun got me in a snap lol.0 -
Looking good! Saw quite a few of these out in morzine, you getting on well with yours now then after the changes?0
-
Yeah, the stem has made a big difference, was considering wider bars, but the 45mm stem and 750mm bar combo is pretty nice... no offset bushings anymore, they're filed in the bin!
Weight is well over the back end now and steering is quicker.
Its got a long wheelbase so its really stable over fast stuff, but I used to get chucked towards the front when braking on steep stuff and it turned like a barge lol.
Wish I'd had a full uplift booked on the Sunday, felt like I was on it! Couple of lads on big DH rigs had to get out the way0 -
I know what you mean, got a 70mm stem on the slayer for XC, makes steering a bit interesting on the descents though... Got a 40mm stem but I bang my knees on it when I'm climbing. Need to get something in the middle really.0
-
Luckily I don't bang my knees, actually easier to climb as I like to stand up and get over the front end lol!
I've still got the 65mm Havoc somewhere, might keep it, but the 45mm feels nice.0 -
really nice bike!Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail

Back to dual ring thanks to a SLX crankset purchase from here...
Feels nice to have a few more gears!0 -

I love the feel and crispness of the Saint rear mech and shifters. I have them on my hardtail, love the look of them too!
They just feel solid.0 -

So, decided last night that the softer spring is going in for XC/AM duties and might change back to stiff for DH.
Was watching the fork over a fast bumpy trail and it was hardly moving!0 -
Erm, that should really be the other way around. Soft spring for downhill, firmer for XC.0
-
nope. Big hits on the DH, need the extra firmness.... its great when there is big stuff, but over lighter xc/am its hard to work the fork.
Plus, I weigh more with all my DH kit on compared to my trail kit.0 -
You're supposed to have more sag (IE softer spring) when riding downhill, as it makes the bike more compliant over small bumps, and firmer for XC for pedalling efficiency. You don't need pedalling efficiency when riding DH.0
-
Sag is fine when I got my DH gear on with the firm spring.
Sag isn't fine when I have my trail kit on.
I'm pretty much bang between the 2 coil weights depending on what I'm wearing/riding.0 -
How much gear do you wear when you're riding downhill??? :? If anything I weigh less because I don't have a backpack full of tools and water on me.0

+1 - the lid is only marginally heavier than xc and I dont have 2 litres of water on my back and tools. I wear the knee pads whatever and the elbow pads are pretty light. For DH I like my bike plush and a little wallowy at the back, little stiffer at the front. But I wouldnt ride my Big Hit for any sort of xc in any case!Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0 -
See I prefer it stiffer for DH. Maybe I ride the bike harder when on the DH, I know on xc rides I'm not really trying cuz I'm fucked from getting it UP the trail haha.
Gonna try the softer spring for a while and see how it goes...0 -
Yeah I would try the softer spring... I think you're just making things harder for yourself. You should have about 35-40% sag for riding downhill, for the regular joe. I think you can only really get away with running a firmer setup if you're really pinning it.0

Canyon riders go huge you know!0
-
lighter spring and decent tyres transformed the Canyon back to what I'm used to on the DH today!
Took a while to set up the forks and rear shock to match, but its pretty quick now. Seems i've lost more weight than I thought, sag is about spot on with the lighter spring!
Will upload vids asap, but I'm fucked... typing is killing my fingers!
Once the Rocklobster is up and running, I'm hoping to at least 1 upift a month!0 -
-
Hate to say I told you so, but...
Nah, glad you're still enjoying it dude.0 -
hehe.. Tis good! The best this is that it took literally less than 5 mins to change. Love how simple these forks are!
Annoyingly though, the rear is dropping away really easy now on tables and drops and I can't figure out how to stop it.
It might just be the different charachteristic that the softer fork gives and i'm still jumping like its stiffer, I dunno. But its annoying as hell!0 -
Aye, That's one reason I really rate rockshox forks (though I'm sure marzocchi and fox are similarly simple on the coil side). It does only take five minutes to do.
Could be something to do with your rebound on the shock? Do you mean like the back ends tends to kick you a bit funny when you're going over jumps?0 -
Yeah played about a bit, when dropping or jumping, the rear of the bike now seems to hang a bit an drop 1st before the front so its harder to land level, I'm hitting the rear wheel 1st.
I think I got it sorted on my last few runs and its more me getting used to it again, I've upped the rear rebound slightly so its not just dropping away... don't want to give it too much mind as don't want a pogo!0 -
I'd have said your rebound needs to be slower if anything. But yeah, just have a play. It could just be technique as well, having gotten used to how the bike handled before.0
