His brother is in Pokey for drugs. Perhaps it refers to his childhood sweetheart but that is just a scandalous unwarranted unevidenced inconsiderate suggestion on my part.

Of course it's difficult to know what goes on behind closed doors, but Mark and Peta seem really happy together. I doubt it's that, but who knows?

I wonder more if he is lamenting the end of HTC?

Possibly but the demise of HTC seems to recent for that and the tenor of his tweet suggests that it is something that he has/had some control over. Having said that perhaps the fate of the team did lie in his hands?

    No, just Cav.
Although I could take on Bernie Eisel as well.

Blimey Iain we keep agreeing on things! Unheard of!.
I was having an interesting chat with someone yesterday and we both said that the rider Sky should be concentrating on is Thomas and not Wiggins or Cavendish. Although I said I have high hopes for Uran who I have been following for some years (being a bit of a Caisse/Movistar tifosa).

I think they are concentrating on a small number of riders. Cav and Wiggins to a point are great figureheads to take the pressure of being so while they develop other riders. it seems wiggins has his head straight now and cav being there will provide wins galore.

I think long term they are working on EBH, Thomas, Kennaugh, Uran etc as being the main prospects, EBH of course is already making a mark. I think Swift is in the balance, being given chances to proove they can develop him further.

However thomas has consistantly said next year he wants to concentrate on olympics where as Wiggins has mentioned doing the vuelta and worlds TT this year as a way of testing going all out at a Grand Tour (TdF next year) followed by performing at a world class TT. He intends to try and win this years worlds TT and the vuelta he indicated will be runat full gas so he can test the theory of TdF followed by olympics and still being in contention for the win.

There seems to be a strange idea that where Sky are involved they can only concentrate on one rider.

In their 2 years can anyone name a rider that hasn't been able to target the races that most suit them? Personally I hoped he would sign elsewhere, but Cav clashes with nobody on the Sky roster. EBH shouldn't, and isn't trying to be a bunch sprinter; Thomas will be leading out for whoever the sprinter is; and Sky showed this year that even with Wiggins in great form there's room for the likes of Knees, Flecha, and EBH at the Tour.

When I first started following people on twitter, there was something voyeuristic about the experience. Clearly, people tweet only what they want others to read, and yet, and yet.........

    over 148,000 people follow Mark
almost 23,000 follow Peta Todd, his girlfriend

And from their tweets, I now know far more about them than I would otherwise have thought that I wanted to know.

I could, of course, stop following people on twitter. But would that help in any way? Anything that stands out I would find out by other means anyway, either through cycling news, bikeradar or the comic.

For what it's worth, I know from twitter that they're on the Isle of Man with Peta's 5 year old son, who is adored by Mark.

I suspect that this is a family problem that should just be quietly left to the family, yet the couple have tweeted and left a riddle for people like myself, (who have greatly admired Mark since 2006, and who wish him well) but who have no business whatsoever knowing that there may be private heartache or turmoil in the Cavendish or Todd family.

It's a funny old world the 21st century.

Announced during the Tour (I think) shortly after Thomas had said a few teams had approached him (clever contract negotiating I think)

@petatodd- Have been thinking of a pretty awesome lady and her family ALL day. Sending love their way in abundance.

They both stopped tweeting for a week straight after the Tour, which Cav then attributed to
"Ok Tweeps, I'm back. Sorry for a week of silence, but sometimes I have to dedicate 100% to my family. Quality time with @petatodd #priceless"

and as he doesn't usually have any problem tweeting whilst he's having quality time with Peta, I'm deducing that someone in his family, possibly his mother, is ill. If that is the case, then I wish her well. The poor women must have been through the mill with her younger son, and her oldest finds it hard to get time back home with her through his work.

I hope I'm wrong, but, like I said, you get to know too much about people you follow on twitter, and when they do want privacy, but let slip a couple of comments, it's so easy to put 2+2 together. Because you feel that you now know them through twitter when, of course, we don't.
  • what's with all this reading-between-the-lines speculation about his private life? Leave it. Maybe his explanation is what it says, he just wanted a bit of time with family. Maybe it's not. If he wants the world to know, he'll say. Saying that his mother might be ill based on no facts whatsoever is well worthy of that horrible red top rag, The S*n.

I know you mean well, but it seems a bit mis-placed on this occasion

Cav sent a tweet which basically invited people to engage in this kind of speculation - see above. Tusher's probably wrong, but she knows that. That's OK though - she's not charging millions of people to read it and and pretending to be right. She's just doing exactly what she's supposed to when her sporting hero tweets her an invitation to speculate about what has recently gone wrong in his private life.

To be fair on Tusher, if Cav didn't want people to speculate, then he shouldn't be tweeting enigmaticly all over the internet. His own fault if people get the wrong end of the stick, if its a private issue, keep it private rather than advertise it to the world via social networking.

Seems a funny view of 'private life' if you invite 150,000 stalkers to speculate on it. Somehow I'm more comfortable with the clear aims of the Sun, profit and influence, making money out of BS seems more straight forward than some sort of fake emotional attachment.

    I agree.

Both Twitter and Facebook status are opportunities for enigmatic attention seeking. The tweeter/booker wants you to know there is a problem but doesn't want to say so their comment is usually cloaked in a Keatsian navel gazing manner i.e "the sun is shining but the sky is blue, just like me"

It's all bollox really but the upside is that (in some cases) it has taught people to explore the power and meaning of the written word.
