Went out for my 1st wet ride this afternoon on my new Canyon Nerve XC 7.0. Just finished cleaning it and I spotted this on the downtube just above the BB underneath the brake hose.
5858062016_14e9485f19_z.jpg5858055590_87306b820b_z.jpg

The brake hose has eaten a groove 10mm long and 1 mm deep in the tube. 50p worth of tape there and I would still be planning a ride this weekend.

This has to be a highly stressed area so thats me off the trail till its sorted. If you own a Canyon I would reccomend you go and check your downtube now and get some helicopter tape under the brake hose quick.

Meanwhile I will be kicking myself and saying rude words.

Either way... it's hardly worth worrying about.

Its not a mark its a 1mm deep groove in a frame tube thats probably only 1.5 to 2.0mm thick

Can cause a focus for stress, cracking the frame. Maybe.

Easily solved with some tape. I recommend all frames should be checked for cable rub.

No its still a brilliant bike
whats the imprecations of this hole?

what sonic said not good in the long term the down tube takes a hammering and as its a light frame bet the metal isnt very thick
how long have you been riding her?

2 weeks and a bit done 5 rides about 75 miles so far this was the 1st wet ride only about 10 miles been working a lot recently so not had much chance to get out

They should make frames out of whatever it is that cables are covered with.

Thats an email off to Canyon UK with loads of photos attached see what they say. Surprised Canyon dont tape up that area, everywhere else on the bike comes pretaped by the factory headtube, front of the downtube and stays etc.

My fault really always properly taped bikes before and double checked after the first ride. I suppose I just assumed that as the bike was so well prepped and the literature says its ready to ride I didnt need to do any more to it. The lack of a 10p sized patch of tape could turn out expensive.

Not having much luck with bikes recently probably about time to take up bowls

I don't think a sock under Jay's bed would be left alone long enough to solidify.

streetvw Thats interesting wonder if the factory assembled mine wrong. The way your hose goes looks a lot tidier than over the top of the BB like mine. I will send Canyon a link to your photo.

Same as streetvw's. The pipe runs to the bottom of the down tube, under the BB and is cable-tied to the front gear cable. Then it runs to a clip under the swingarm. It looks as though yours has been routed incorrectly during assembly, stubs. It's also escaped quality control so it's clearly Canyon's responsibility. Let us know how you get on. (The cable-tie to the gear cable is ex-factory, I haven't added anything except dirt).

Thanks Fudgie it definitely looks like mine is assembled wrong.

Reccomend everyone who has a Canyon checks and if it is routed over the BB take some photos then reroute properly like Fudgie and streetvw's brake hoses are routed.

Will let you know how it goes with Canyon they have a good customer service reputation so shouldnt be any problem. Just dont want to ride it till its sorted under warranty.

  • Mine is also the same as StreetVW's. There's a tiny amount of rubbing at the edge of the weld but its only paint. Certainly won't stop me riding when my new brake pads and grips arrive today.

Unlucky stubs I hope you get it sorted.

The last two bikes I've bought have had at least half-a-dozen places where the cables would rub but fortunately I sorted them before riding. It seems an oversight that new bikes can be sold in this condition.

Fudge & co I would be a bit worried about the brake hose being damaged by flying stones  Also looks from the pics that the brake hose could be damaged by the sharp edge/weld area oft the bb/down tube junction
Have seen the damage caused to a Yeti gear cable which runs under the bb, mate ended up hiking for a few miles  It was a demo bike, he did not buy and a lesson was learnt Do not buy bikes where cables run under bb
Another friend has just got a refund from Specialised for a bike where the gear cable had worn through the bb shell due to being fitted too tightly against the bb shell and not having enough clearance to allow the suspension to move without causing said rub :!: :?: :?:

This thread spurred me to check mine (XC 9.0), and I've got exactly the same problem as stubs.

The brake hose runs over the top of the BB rather than underneath as per Fudgie's and street vw - consequently there's a decent sized gouge out of the downtube - virtually the same place. Only done about 100 miles on the bike so far, but it's reasonably deep considering.

Taken photos but can't seem to embed one in this message....

Taped it, but worried now if the damage has been done. Weird how some are routed under, some over - my mate who bought a Canyon after trying mine, has the cable routing under the frame (same as Fudgie and chums).

Stubs - let us know what Canyon say - I've got an email poised, ready to go.

AMcK Get your email off to Canyon straight away. I dont read German but a friend at work is bilingual and she read a few german websites for me. Warranty for Canyon according to quite a few posts doesnt sound the fastest thing on the planet (one fella has been waiting 8 months FFS) so you might as well get in the queue now.

    8 months?

I'm guessing the fact that everyone and their dogs cousin has bought a Canyon lately has probably added to the long delays in sorting out issues.
