hatbeard wrote:turnerjohn are you commuting yet? if so what's your route and what do you ride it on? there's a lot of us out and about during rush hour so odd's are you'll cross paths sooner or later (unless it's dhope as he never seems to see anyone )
Hi Hatbeard ah well am north of the river (only just) do London City airport, DLR route to Canary Wharf ....my routes far more fun then the rather tame (and flat) CS3 lol. See the odd bod about but not many...maybe its my speed...or the time of day (8ish). Will try to make the pub though...be good to meet up with fellow bike commuters0 -
OK - can't be bothered reading all of this, but up for a local beer and will probably be doing a Kent 50 miler this weekend, most likely Saturday leaving about 8ish - here's the route:
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/69217970
A little lumpy but no major hills, unless we take a minor detour up Titsey Hill/White Lane - agony and too difficult when it's wet, but might punish myself if it's dry.
Headhuunter, it's basically the route we attempted last year, but I know where I'm going now, have sorted the Garmin and managed to get the legs going properly - looking to average about 16.5, last ride before the Spring Onion the week after.
Drop me a PM if anyone's up for it.0 -
Wow - just noticed the venue used to be the Paradise Club - I used to go there many years ago when it was one of the only places open late you could get into, and I was a little less clean living than I am now. Passed by it since and it looks OK.
Hatbeard - I'll warn you now about Headhuunter (and Mat Hammond) - they are pretty quick, those annoying types who seem to stroll up hills on the big ring while I'm spinning and cramping up.0 -
oh I know I'm all mouth and no trousers I can't even walk at the moment as I've fubared my calf muscles running last saturday(!)
but i'll be sure to remember to not accept any drunken wagers on a race up shooters hill after the pub.Hat + Beard0 -

I think we have the makings of a plan here...0 -
@turnerjohn you're more than welcome to come and explore south of the river and have a few pints, I would do some investigation on the route there and back beforehand though as getting across the river by bike is tricky in these neck of the woods especially by chucking out time. maybe some of the others will know the best way.
unless you just hop on the dlr and pedestrian it in which case you'll have no issuesHat + Beard0 -

Can't do Sat but if your plans change to Sunday let me know. Otherwise I'll be doing similar Sunday am.

As you can see I average a much more sedate 15mph though so you would probably set me a good target.0 -
I may do, will let you know.0

Still, the descent on the Welling side has to be the best in SE London - it's smooth, straight, fast and, miracle, there are no lights at the bottom. The only bad part of it is that you end up in Welling. Isn't there a silly commuter downhill racing thread yet?0 -
I used to live a five minute walk from the Royal Albert. Sadly that girlfriend got dumped, and I moved to Crystal Palace. The 10th's out for me - I'll be cycling from Greenwich to Chingford for work that evening - but if there's a repeat gathering I'll do my best to be there. There's a nice-looking lass behind the counter and a good choice of proper beer....0

@turnerjohn.... It is a bloody nightmare for travelling from your direction at the moment since they shut the foot tunnel at Greenwich. Your only option if you don't want to use the riverboats is the STHSCR (TM) via Tower Bridge. The only shortcut then is the Rotherhithe which is not recommended without a gas mask.
I'd be there but it would mean Liverpool st to the pub, back over Tower Bridge to Canary Wharf to play indoor cricket at 9pm and then the reverse to get back to Lewisham. If only that bloody foot tunnel was open......0 -
What is the address of the pub? I am getting confused as to whether its called the Prince Albert or Royal Albert..
Will see if i can make next Thurs..0 -

Should be open again from tomorrow. Lift broken but easy enough to sling the bike over your shoulder and trot down the stairs.0 -

Their twitter feed says it is a possibility it would reopen... Just wondering if that is for the whole night or just until 9pm like it has been all year. I rang the number on the website but got a message to ring the call centre who just gave the 1st number again to ring. Can't say I am surprised, they haven't seemed to know what they are doing there for the past year.....0 -

These are the latest twitters that the council has twattered:
# We will Tweet to confirm when the tunnel has re-opened on Friday and once again we would like to apologise for the ongoing disruption. about 19 hours ago via web
# Really sorry but we have just been told the Greenwich foot tunnel will remain closed until Friday - when both sets of stairs will be opened
I'm not sure what hours it's going to be open even then but there were a couple of notices posted up at the south tunnel entrance and they seem to be more accurate than Greenwich council's twittery. I'll have a look to see if there's any news over the weekend.
Last Sunday morning the nearest river crossing east of the Rotherhithe tunnel was getting a lift under the Dartford tunnel from the highways people - both foot tunnels out, ferry shut until 11:30. It turned a 20-odd mile trip to Rainham into 50 miles.0 -
To be fair though, no one in their right mind wants to go to rainham

I do believe Cafewanda is going to join us....and for anyone that I know this may be the last occasion to socialise as I'm escaping from London very soon0

Oy can confirm that oy'll be there. Assuming I don't get lost as I'll be coming from Tooley Street, should I bring a book? I should get there by 6pm*
*given my sense of direction it could end up being later :oops:0 -

That's just what I was thinking. I can't think of a Prince Albert in Deptford, only the now-rebranded Greenwich one on Royal Hill.0 -

Yep. Cycled over there 2 weeks ago to look at a car. Grim.
If you guys go to the Herne Tavern any time, as suggested earlier, I'm up for that. It's about 1/2 mile from me, run by a friend and there's loads of space out the back to safely stash bikes. Food's good too. 8)0 -
