I was riding yesterday wearing my GB TEAM JERSEY with one club. And one of the leaders came from behind and quietly whispered 'this sort of jersey is not expectable'. It’s not until later on I realised he was being serious. When I asked for a reason he simply said...YOU HAVEN'T EARNED THE JERSEY.

How many of us wear England shirt? we are not pretending like we are waiting for a phone call from Fabio for England call up, we are just fans! I really can't understand some...some people need to grow up!

There was a long thread about this which divided between those who felt nobody but those who had "earned or won" them and those who really didn't give a stuff.

Personally I think a shirt is a shirt is a shirt. Cycling seems to be unique in this "earned or won" point of view about shirts from what I can tell.

I hope you're riding an Apollo when you're wearing that.

I don't know if it was expectable or not. But it certainly wasn't acceptable. 8)

Personally - as someone who has 'earned' my national team kit, I prefer that others who haven't, don't wear it. But I ride for a country with ugly kit so it's not usually a problem.
  • It sounds like you have encountered what we call up here a prick. There are many of them around and unfortunately some of them have learned to ride a bike.

In an ideal world they would stick to golf and then they could wander around clubhouses complaining when someone wasn't wearing regulation trousers or had a short which was slightly untucked. I'd suggest that this isn't the club for you because chances are it is riddled with pricks.

find another club...or invest in a German National champions jersey and see how that goes down. The weird thing is that wearing Italian strip would probably be the cause of compliments.

    Damn right.

You wouldn't play football with an FA Cup winners medal that you bought off eBay round you neck.

Different. The England football shirt is purposefully sold for football fans. The England Cap isn't. The GB Jersey is the equivalent of a football 'cap'. You wouldn't wear one...

Cyclists get medals too. He wasn't wearing a medal but a shirt. Besides that, it was a team shirt not a champions shirt and, yes, plenty of people play footy with team shirts on.

    It's very simple.

Pro cycling teams, pro sports teams, etc - WANT you to buy and wear their kit. That is why they sell it.

GB Cycling squad does NOT. That is why they don't sell it publicly.

I'd actually be happy with it - well I'd think of you no differently to somone who wore Cevelo or Sky or something - it's a team jersey not a national champions jersey which is actually won. The team jersey is no more earnt than a Sky Pro team jersey or similar.

National / World Champions jersey - have a quiet word with the individual explain why it's not done.
Team Jersey - At most tease the individual a bit asking about where they raced with the team etc.

What a sad man. Wear what makes you feel good. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a fool. Do you really want to ride with such idiots? This sort of moron makes me sick.
Be proud of yourself and others who wear such colours. Wiggins would want you to wear it. 8)

Next time out the OP should wear a yellow TdF jersey, KoM or green jersey to see what reaction that gets. I suspect the only shirts and shorts that are acceptable are those of the club kit  .

You're still missing the point. ASO (the Tour owners and organizers) sell Yellow, White, Polka Dot and Green jerseys. Again - they WANT you to buy them.

It, very obviously, is not simple enough.

The OP can wear whatever he likes and anybody who thinks differently is wrong.

Some countries want having the jersey to mean something. So that when you see someone riding by wearing it - you know they are the real deal (Bhima - are you paying attention!?). GB is one of these countries. Some countries don't care and sell it publicly.

I ride for Ireland and it's pretty hard to buy the kit if you're not on the team. And the public response you get when riding the Irish roads is a really nice feeling. If every other cyclist was wearing the same kit, it wouldn't be the same.

Of course - at the end of the day - it's (still) a free country and people can wear whatever they want. At least the guy on the club run was told quietly and discretely that the jersey 'wasn't earned'. There are many instances where he would have been sent home to change!

And the club can make whatever rules up they want to... He chose to rode with them, you'd expect him to meet their rules.

No. You're wrong. You have to earn a GB jersey. Anyone who thinks differently is wrong.

We now seem to be at an impass. You think I'm wrong. I know you're wrong. Next you'll be telling me you wear underpants under your bibshorts.

They're happy for foreign vendors to sell it though, apparently, as I've seen it for sale in Germany.

Yup, and I've seen it for sale on Ebay. Doesn't mean it's the real deal.
