I've progressed no further than setting the turbo up and staring at it.

Well I set mine up in the shed today

I think that's enough for one day. Don't want to 'overtrain'.

And that can lead to injury. You're right to be cautious.

That's good going. Time to get my backside in gear, me thinks.

Just did 1hr20 while watching the 2010 Tour of Flanders vid and ramping up the gears whenever I saw them doing a climb. Made for a decent tempo workout. Still another kilo to go to get back to pre-xmas weight, bah. Wife is trying to sabotage my efforts with giant meals and leaving crisps in the house...My personal kryptonite.

Maybe it's the novelty (I've not even had the thing a month) but I find it quite nice to just pedal away even with no music/visuals.

Finally off the mark: 1 hour 11 mins. For those who are interested:

    Warm-up for 10 mins
2 x 20 mins (with 5 mins recovery in between efforts)
    5 mins recovery
    3 x 1 min sprint-ish efforts with 1 min between efforts
    6 mins warm down

I sort of made it up aa I went along.

@Zachariah - was the same when I started. Boredom set in quite quickly last year, so hoping the iPod will make things more interesting.

More sprint intervals - Did the Heavy Train and stopped after two sets (I thought that was the end! Then the timer carried on and I called it a day). Basically it's three Tabata sets with 5mins rest. I was slumped over the handlebars at the end of set two. This is one of those things I'm hoping to come back to once I have achieved Amazing Levels Of Fitnesstm and complete easily.

Got my new TT setup on Saturday. Stuck it outside on the patio in the end as it was nice out. Did an hour session rather than head to RP (that's a weird kind of laziness). No real structure, but I'll make some plans. Can't log mileage though. Going to aim for evening sessions, good to be able to use it outside during the dark evenings, avoids the overheating issues! Need to raise the front wheel as well.

Here's how things looked on Sat:

Hows that rear tyre? I made the mistake of leaving a Conti Ultra on and the turbo melted it!

I've only done 1 hour so far and it seems fine. Prob is I'm using that bike for commuting at the mo so no way am I gonna faff about changing tyres all the time.

Hey Il Prinicpe it looks like we have the same turbo (Elite Crono Mag). What resistance do you use? Do you change it much or use gears? I find the little remote gizmo won't fasten on to my handlebars so I tend to leave it on one setting each workout and use the gears.

And maddeningly, my new wireless computer (O-Synce Macro Free) won't work with the sensor on the rear wheel. How can those things be so short range?

I try to use the resistance rather than the gears, makes it easier to be consistent. But I only got it at the weekend so am feeling my way into it at the mo! I only have a Garmin Edge and usually rely on the GPS to calc speed/distance etc as it get swapped between 3 bikes.

Believe me it'll melt. You'll see a shiny line appear down the middle and it'll start be tacky to touch.

I bought a Conti turbo tyre and the difference is huge

Not to discount your advice, but I've used the same turbo as IP has for several sessions including sprints, and have not noticed any tyre wear yet. Tyres are brand new Conti Sports. The elastogel roller of the turbo is sold as being kinder to tyres than metal ones. And I'm no lightweight at 83kg.

Good to hear. Should point out that I'm using a Conti 'Force' tyre and not a Sport or Ultra. The Force is 24mm and supposed to be hard wearing...

I'm using my never ending supply of old tyres from the "bad" year 2009

Managed 60 mins this afternoon, back of the net!!!

20 minutes on the rollers just now. Just a steady effort but I'm a sweaty mess.

Now I'm nicely warmed up it's time to SCR

First night on the turbo. A bit of faffing about adjusting stuff then 20 mins of steady riding. First thing I've learnt is that my pedalling technique is awful

Also I might invest in a cheapo HRM. Any suggestions?

I wouldn't buy a Timex again - had lots of problems with receiver in the chest strap thingy.

120min session with R2 for the ears and the Amstel Gold race 2001 for the eyes (laptop isn't loud enough to compete with turbo). Nice session with a little bit of everything thrown in as the mood took me (the unstructured nature of the training will come back to haunt me come race day). Weighed myself after the post-ride shower for an ego-boosting 81kg, my lowest for years...It'll be back up tomorrow though, my weight seems to swing up and down by at least 2kg every few days.

    Nice work.

Managed a steady 30 mins this morning. Was aiming for more, but body refused to get out of bed.

Tonights top tip - don't wear your watch when on the turbo. You'll just look at it constantly and wonder how time can pass so slowly, also your watch will smell
