some average bowling and poor batting IMO well done to sids though

it has silenced some of the boys here at work and i do have a smile on my face today.
I'm not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information
  • Oh well, day 1 goes to the Aussies, not much doubt about that...cricket's a long game, though.

Too early to tell really. The Aussies are 25 - 0, if they lose their first wicket early tomorrow and continue at the same rate then it will be close at the end of the innings. Siddell taking a hatful of wickets must give our bowlers confidence as he is no better than them.
  • haha
not so hard being an Aussie now eh???
Wait and see what happens tommorow.
if its anything like any other ashes series the starting point means a lot... :P
    mmmmmm.......... bikes..................
  • you just knew that was going to happen

not a disaster for England but the Aussies must now have a lot of confidence that they were probably lacking yesterday

we could have done with an early wicket to make the day a bit less Australia's

Strauss and Cook's form will be crucial to this series I think
  • Its a stupid game anyway and I wont be watching the highlights later, harumph  I got an e mail yesterday confirming that our tickets for India and Sri Lanka for Lords next Summer have been granted 8)
  • Must admit I'd probably think it's a stupid game after a performance like that too.
If it was my team batting I mean

  • The great Australian poultry census seems to have started very early this year...

EDIT: this cryptic comment may need explaining to Australians - don't be afraid to ask
  • Can't be much of an Australian census if Australians don't even know what it is.

That's probably because you're all too busy counting your chickens before they hatch.

Anyhow, England played themselves back into the game after lunch but Hussey stalled that by playing excellently. So the Aussies still have the edge but by a smaller margin than yesterday. Right, time for a couple of hours' shut-eye....

It's great that things are so well poised.

As much fun as it was thumping you 5-0 last time, close matches & series are much more exciting.
  • half eleven start tonight isn't it? Think I may have a little kip when I get in and give the all-nighter a go seeing as I've no real plans for tomorrow morning, especially if it snows. Was trying to explain to a work colleague the appeal of 5 day cricket but he didn't really get it.

I think if Aus manage to keep Swann out of the game like yesterday then they've a good chance of winning.

We won "last time", or doesn't that count? :?

When we last won using a Kookaburra ball I didn't have grey hair. Horrible things for a finger spinner.

    That's better

    He he

Come to think of it, tennis balls would have been a massive improvement...
  • Holding a brand spanking new Duke ball is lovely. Looking at the batsman from the end of your run up, smiling and thinking to yourself that he is bang in trouble now. You steam in as fast as you can, you fly through the crease ripping your shoulder apart to ring out every ounce of benefit that a new cherry affords you. Then you see your supposed victim rock onto the back foot and dismiss your wide long hop to the boundary with majestic aplomb. Right, that's f*c$ing it pal you promise as you march back to your mark.

Bet that never happened to you with a kookabura

Playing with a wet Kookaburra is as hazardous as the proverbial soap in the prison showers...and you know what happens when the soap's slipped out of your hand...

EDIT: Mind you, if they don't start pitching the new ball up we might as well go home!
  • well the Wallabies should get flogged tonight by France......sigh.
  • And tonight's question is ''How resilient is this England team?'' Australia have started off by far the better team, but I really think this England team is a long way off being a pushover. (For a change....)
  • Strauss has played some lovely shots for his ton. Cook sticking around is good for a change. Hope they stay in to see off the rest of the lead, knock the wind out of their sails and push on.
  • Well woke up this morning to see that England have actually done alright!!! It seems like the ball is softening very quickly and the wicket it not that good a bowling wicket.
I'm expecting this one to be a draw but, if Aus get some early wickets tonight and England don't get too many more runs, it'll be an Aussie win, don't see England being in the position to win!

you chased leather all day and are now probably hoping for a draw, you'd need to roll us over inside 1.5 sessions to have a chance win it, more likely we will set the target

I am buying my happy retirement card for Ponting now
  • A draw still looks like the most likely result to me. But Strauss' and Cook's answer to Hussey yesterday was superb. England look to have grabbed the game back and the Australians now know this is not a pushover team and they have a real fight on their hands.

+1 stayed up until tea you didn't have us under any pressure all night & dropped the only 2 chances you got. Listen to your fans having a whinge after. Music to the ears. Johnson was quite poor, Captain setting fields with no idea of how to get either man out. Hopefully its knocked at least a bit of the stuffing out of you.
  • What a perfectly ridiculous game cricket is! 5 days of epic reversals of fortune, some unbelievable scores - 517/1 - records tumbling and the net result of all this? A draw.

Though, perhaps it wasn't really a draw because in the end the pitch won...

Next there's Adelaide, isn't it? That's likely to go in favour of whoever wins the toss and if the team that loses the toss forces a draw, they'll take that as a moral victory. We could end up after another 5 days of cricket with a new winner - the coin.

None of which will stop me spending hours of sleepless nights listening to Test match Special, of course.
  • Is the internets in Australia broken or something?
  • They are probably having a day of national mourning. Don't worry, if they actually find someone who can bowl and get us out cheaply again they will soon come flooding back.

Ponting's coming in for some flack in the Sydney Daily Telegraph.

    The new joke:
''Hey Ricky, did you hear the one about Australia taking 20 wickets in a test?''
  • I hope they fix the internets in Ausbo soon so that we can discuss them dropping Johnson for the second test which starts tonight.
