Bole nicks points from Hushovd, for Ale J.
Gap now 2 minutes and climbing.
I sense another Shack stage win coming up.
Kloden the best climber in this bunch.

With Hjesdal and Vino I suspect some teams will try to limit their advantage.

I dunno Ryder is no slouch these days and klodi hasn't impressed much

    could be right

not convinced that they are going to stay away just yet

    thor in front group

bole to try and mug him

Oh I'm sure Bole killing himself on these early mountains will seem him well down by the end! Doing a good job for Petacchi there though.

IME, they are doing this so Saxo has to work chasing this at the peloton. But I am no expert so probably wrong :)

Does the team get to stand on the podium in Paris if they win the team classification?

I agree, doubt they will stay away and would take Vino or more likely Ryder who is very good on the steep ones (5th in Eroica, 2nd in Amstel and 7th in Fleche, just this year).

Is tragic really the right word to use here ?

The gap is being held at 2'10". Must mean Saxo are getting that helping hand.
The pace on the 2nd cat, unsurprisingly, has steadied.

tragic is strong but thee is an air of desperate times desperate measures... because of all the back story

but as for team gc...why not take it seriously for the start and make it your goal for paris...

    some french teams do...

    Lead seems limited at 2m30s.

Something's up with Radioshack. To have one rider off the pace can happen but they are all miles of previous levels. Armstrong, Kloeden, Brajkovic, Leipheimer are having a tough time. Popovych too is a shadow of his former self. I wonder what's changed this year? :? :?:

I dunno - I'd say Levi's position on GC at the moment is reasonable, but would agree with all the others.

Anyone else feel that Hushovd has made a conscious decision to perhaps tweak his training / reduce his weight and risk being up there in the bunch sprints in order to pick up the relatively straighforward intermediate points on a day like this? Not a criticism as I think it's a good tactic and would like to see the points jersey be determined more on an all round basis rather than it being just a sprinters competition.

Hmmmmmmmm. Not so easy is it now. Same goes for Dave Z, Hincapie and others. Hope the Feds fry them.

I will say as much when I am in the Pyrenees next week.

I find it hard to fathom why a team would spend so much effort on the team classification yet neglect the KoM jersey? One is significantly more valuable than the other in publicity yet very few teams ever seem to try for the latter.

I was thinking last night how a few extra stages like today with a chain of 2nd and 3rd cat climbs in areas such as the Massive Central, Vosges and Ardennes to replace a coupe of the flat stages could help liven up the race and put a few more riders into GC contention. To keep it all a bit more open I was thinking the race needs the TTT as this means that team selection is crucial and those who pick a lot of mountain domestiques can lose time, a pave section plus maybe 4 of these sorts of days and that this would mean that a rider who maybe doesn't get over the high mountains with the leaders could upset the apple cart a bit and force more agressive racing in the hills. Any thought?

Caisse lost 28s to Shack in the 9k Prologue. So may lose 2-3mins in the 51k TT?
