Why would it be about the timing? They might cancel the points, but timing? doesn't make sense

He could claim that they would have caught Chavanel if they hadnt waited so Chavanel should not gain time?

It was just speculation on his part. Why does it make sense to cancel the points? Hushovd probably doesn't agree.

Could this give Chavanel the platform for a Top10 final GC position? Time will tell obviously but his previous results aren't bad.

What was the time gap? He's not that bad - he finished 20th last year - but i dont think a few minutes advantage now will make much difference.

Can we take it that the riders will effectively neutralise the entire stage tomorrow given the odds that there will be some crashes.

I think I prefer the Springtime Spartacus - the one with the batteries.

WTF, the AG2R rider just took advantage at the last minute to grab 2nd place. Yeah, real impressive.

Maybe he felt Cancellara was over-reacting... who made him king?

Isn't another unwritten rule that the yellow Jersey has a say on the tempo of the day?

Only when it's a well known rider, apparently. Do you think they would have listened to Tony Martin or some random French guy?

Well, the race judges actually. :) He'd talked to them and they must have told him to neutralize the finish.

What a load of cr@p. Why should I spend 3 hours watching this when the riders don't bother to compete the finish. Total, utter rubbish. I may watch the highlight of future stages but certainly no more live stuff.

a serious case of small cogs

Hushovd and McEwen made sure they were fairly high up (7th and 4th) just in case.

Personally I think it's all nonsense. They should just get on with it. This waiting nonsense - they wait for the Schlecks, but not Vande Velde. Where do you draw the line?

Yes, it needs to be a respected (or feared) rider to dictate the terms.

Those who stayed upright, especially Hushovd and other sprinters who distanced Cav, Ciolek and Petacchi, a good chance for Green might go missing.

Sure, but they clearly came to some agreement with him and it is their final say.

So am I awarding PTP points or what? No-one picked Chavanel and he was the only person who bothered to race today.

Can someone explain WTF is going on?

If it's neutralized - is that just for the points? Does it mean that guys like VdV who came in 10 minutes late will not lose that time or they will?

Looks like you should ask Fabian about that one...

Farrar just came in 19 min behind. If they don't neutralize the times, he's out.

Well - if the finish was neutral - not really fair to award points?

1 Sylvain Chavanel (Fra) Quick Step 4:40:48
2 Maxime Bouet (Fra) AG2R La Mondiale 0:03:56
3 Fabian Wegmann (Ger) Team Milram
4 Robbie McEwen (Aus) Team Katusha
5 Christian Knees (Ger) Team Milram
6 Jurgen Roelandts (Bel) Omega Pharma-Lotto
7 Thor Hushovd (Nor) Cervelo Test Team
8 Linus Gerdemann (Ger) Team Milram
9 Matthieu Ladagnous (Fra) Française des Jeux
10 Bernhard Eisel (Aut) Team HTC - Columbia

Those of us that picked Hushovd say yes!

But more seriously let's see if the stage gets an official result or not. If it is recognised by ASO, then hopefully the PTP jury will agree too.

What would the elimiation time be? They do sometimes look the other way if people have crashed, although he could lose points.

Please, everyone always blasts LA for this, but Hinault did this long before Lance and Anquetil was doing it way back when too.

In cases like this when a lot of riders come in way behind, they just dock them points rather than boot them from the race, especially when there are exigent circumstances. They did it in the Giro.

I think they're gonna give chavanel his time and yellow, and everyone else the same time as the cancellara group.

the stage results are truncated at letour.fr, but the GC is already showing on the web and on tv, consistent with that

EDIT - letour.fr just changed. today's time gaps now reflecting real life. sorry about that.

I think the issue stems from the motorcycle that also crashed when the Lampre rider went down.

Some riders are saying that held them up??

I take it there was a crash that led to all of this? If so, why was this crash different than any other?

Points have been neutralized too. Chavanel keeps his - now in green.

I see Lance crashed. I wonder if this is the crash we were waiting for that will put him out of the race overnight 8)
