So how many of us fell off on this outing? I know of at least 5 that came off some more than once, I for one came a cropper on the north shore near the first cafe (thanks for the warning Paul but just a bit too late :) ) but all in all a bloody good day out thanks again to all who arranged this outing.
Now where's the Radox Oooo! my aching legs

Hi jono if you ever fancy meeting up for a ride then let me know but give it a week for my legs and shoulder's a rest

Hi Mick will have to meet up for some rides we're going to try and get to Gisburn within the next few weeks, will let you know about that when it's arranged.
I now know what Baz Luhrmann was on about now in his Sunscreen song Look after your knees, you'll miss them when there gone

Would anyone mind giving me a bit of technical help. I decided to give the bike a proper clean today and took the chain off, cleaned it and the mech and have replaced it using an sram power link. My question is how do you set the chain so that it's engaged correctly if that makes sense?

Once this is done I can watch the videos!

    Cheers

Dan........When you say 'set the chain' are you reffering to adjustment so it rides each cog properly without trying to slip to another gear ?

No, simply positioning it right once in place. What gear it should be in and how far back the rear deralier should be pulled whilst keeping the chain tensioned at the top ...

No, simply positioning it right once in place. What gear it should be in and how far back the rear deralier should be pulled whilst keeping the chain tensioned at the top ...

Ok....if you have a normal deurailier i.e....the spring tension pulls the deurailier towards the smallest cog....(which i suspect you have then the chain will have to be put on the smallest cog)...the deuraileur when free will automatically line up with this cog when there is no chain fitted....at which point you then fit the cable back on making sure any play in cable is taken out......i'm presuming at this point that you haven't moved the position of the high and low adj screws on deuraileur body when you clean it all....when youv'e fitted cable you can then put chain back on.

You will then have to adjust the tension on the cable with barrel adjuster (found where cable enters deurailier body) to get the gears to change properly without slipping.

I have given you a link below that descibes this process....look under INDEX SHIFTING.

I hope this is ok for you bud, this link is an informative guide to the complete process of sorting the rear deurailier out......any probs give me a shout....i will be on the forum 2night.

Yes, that would be far simpler but judging by the expression on your face up the hills I think gears are worth a bit of complexity!

I haven't adjsuted anything. I just want the chain position to be right. Does it matter which ring the front deurailier is on? Am I right in that I put it on the smallest ring such the deurailier is just left at it's resting position and the top of the chain has no slack?

if youve not adjusted anything, just put the chain back on and turn the pedals as though riding. the chain will then put itself on to the correct rings

    Refer to image above

+1 for doing the ride on the single speed. I think I used every gear I had.

Is it the same chain ? As long as its the same length all I do is stick it on any of the rings give it a few spins and hey presto.

when fitting chain on put it on the middle chainring at front....if you have to adj the cable tension with barrel adjuster then put chain on largest front chainring.

When riding, if using the smallest front chainring the rear largest 4-5 cogs should be used only,.....if using largest front chainring only the smallest 4-5 cogs should be used......only when using front middle chainring can you use all of the rear gears.

I might be overcomplicating it or not explaining myself properly or just being stupid or all three!

What I've done now is put rear on smallest cog then take off front then whilst pulled top such that there's no slack and positioned around front smallest cog maintaing tension at top thereby letting the rear deurailier spring back as far as possible. Hopefully this is right but if not, please let me know.

It's changing gear fine so no adjustment should be necessary.

dan, have a look at this

    http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/article/w ... bike-23582

really good info, although i would always set high/low adjusters with the chain on but the cables loose. i would put the bike up on a stand and turn the pedals with your right hand whilst moving the mechs in and out with your left hand ( look out your finger tips)!
this way you can make sure the chain goes to the top and bottom gears but no further ( ie into the wheel or off into the frame) . once this is set, turn the barrel adjuster on the gear levers out a couple of turns from fully in then tighten the cable. this gives you fine tuning adjustment. new cables will need a half turn outwards maybe after a couple of rides to compensate for cable stretch.

remember, once high/low adjustments have been made they shouldn't need touching again, small adjustments to gears if they are rattling ( not sitting on the sprocket correctly) normally only need a small 1/4, 1/2 turn of the barrel adjuster ( either way) on the gear lever whilst you are riding.

long winded, but hope this helps

No worries it was only for the families amusement anyway.... As for riding out in the Chilterns I'm out pretty much every weekend and a couple or three nights during the week always glad of a bit of company... check your PM ;o)

This is answering a question I didn't ask but will be helpful as I think the cable has probably stretched a bit as the chain did get jammed against the frame a couple of times and was rattling. I've only done three proper rides on the bike and there were minor problems on the second and a bit worse this time so that makes sense.
