So it should finish bedding in on the way to school tomorow, or if they don't, i might not be able to stop when i get there, and end up hitting the headteacher, then running him over and killing him. that would be such a shame

I've got my bike back from the lbs now, and the wheels run so well! I'm about half way through bedding them in- they're more powerful than they were before, but i still can't endo at all, and i can only skid if i use two fingers. How long should it take to bed in pads? i've been doing the thing when you accelarate to about 20mph, then brake hard with both brakes, but without locking up the wheels, at least 10 times- should it take this long?

You don't need to be able to endo or skid. Skidding loses your handling of the bike (or shows lack of), and you don't *need* to be able to endo - although it is fun

Brakes are brakes, they're just meant to slow you down, some more than others.

i'm just using that as a measure of how powerful they are- (i don't normally skid), as with the last pads, i could skid or endo easliy. They're still not bedded in, though they are more powerful, and now i can endo again! after i cycled back from school today, i was playing around on a steep grass hill near me, which is about 40 degrees, and has rocks sticking out of it which you can drop off, which is fun. unfortunately, there is a road at the bottom, so you don't want your brakes to fail! i had fun on there, and the brakes are a lot better now. After that i showed off to my neighbours kids and there friends, doing wheelies and stuff- they were like 'wow, how do you do that'

The recons do make a big difference jadamson - they're amazing- so much better uphill and downhill.
I looked on the decathlon website, and couldn't see an 8.0, Wappygixer.

Its not out yet but will be available in a few weeks time.
New models have started to come in for this year and so far looks promising with a few design changes for the better.

    Ok thanks wappygixer, that's intersting

does getting the pads wet help them bed in faster?

May be your discs are contaminated and need cleaning.
I had a 5XC come into the workshop today with the brakes not performing.I cleaned the pads up and then cleaned the discs. Now they work perfectly.
Also what replacement pads did you buy?

they're not contaminated. they just weren't as powerful as my last pads, i've contaminated pads before, then you have no power. they're fine now, bedded in properly after my ride today.

I have a bit of spare money now, so what do you think i should upgrade?
    Charge spoon

i thought you were saving any money you got towards your next bike?

i'd go for the Spoon though :) Just ordered one myself for the Hardrock, that along with the Thomson Elite Layback i have on order should go nicely :)

Is your current saddle comfy? If yes, why change it?

charge spoon is now ordered :D i'll post new pics when it's arrived and i've fitted it - probably wednesday
and i've ordered a 4 pack of superstar organic pads, so next time my pads wear out i'll have spares, and won't have to go and waste £20 on them at the lbs
i'll get wellgo b-54's in about a month, then i'll only upgrade what brakes or wears out.

charge spoon hasn't arrived, but i've got new pictures anyway, before and after cleaning, and i've got a few problems i need to sort out - what i think could be a crack in the frame (see this thread: http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... t=12690683 ) the non drive side bb cup looks loose (if that's what it's called) and i don't know how to take off the big chainring, so have pictures of the bolts.

Should this be tighter? i tried, but it's too slippery. there's about 2 threads outside of the frame.

What tools do i need to remove the outer chainring? no allen key i've tried has worked?

    1. no wonder the "old" saddle was uncomfortable. just look at the position!
    2. you can't take chainrings off from a cheapo suntour crank

    Thanks jay
you mean the angle? it isn't actually pointed down that much- it's on a slope, but it is tilted a bit, as it takes the pressure off areas where you don't want pressure, isf you know what i mean. i think there suntour xcm's or xct's, fairly budget stuff, so not too suprised that they're not removable. i'll get an slx double and bash chainset in about 6 months then. what do you think about the bottom bracket?

Depends how loose it is. You can buy the BB tool for about £6 and do it yourself - very simple job! :)

What is the BB? If it's just a standard 20 spline square taper then this is what you need:

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=14914

Count how many splines there are on the BB, and is it square taper? :)
