So, now i find both sets of my pads are worn out, and the one spare set i had doesn't fit, so that means having to fork out more money out of my enduro savings for new pads, as well as having to pay the lbs to sort out my brakes. My current pads have a square little hole in the back, but the spare has a round hole, so doesn't fit, even though the piston is round :? Am i just doing it wrong?

how much will all that cost?

danr is selling shimano deore brakes for £70 for the pair

If they don't need a bleed, i'll only be paying about £20, because my Dad said he'll pay for pads. If they do need a bleed, i might ask dan about that- thanks for telling me. How good are deores?

Yes. It's about the shape of the pad, not the hole on the back.

Now I'm not meaning to be funny/having a dig but now you realise just how hard it's going to be to save all that money at your age for the Enduro, if buying brake pads is going to put you back on your saving. They are a small thing to buy normally for an MTBer.

Even regular maintenance/parts wearing out will dent your pocket, and that's an ongoing thing as long as you ride. So you have 2 areas of expenditure:

    1. Parts for the bike you have now, and things break and wear out constantly.
    2. Saving for your new build.

As an adult, and someone who has wages coming in, that still adds up, even on a monthly basis.

I can afford what I can because obviously it's easier as an adult, with regular income coming in etc etc. And even then it's not 'easy-easy'.......

As I said, I'm not pi55ing on your chips, just saying it could take 2-years to get that kind of money, and as echoed above, a lot of things in the meantime will get in the way.

i know it will take 2 or 3 years to save up for this, but that doesn't mean i'm not going too. with my paper round, pocket money and other stuff i get £10 a week. so that's £520 in a year, plus another £400 if i just get money from christmas and birthday. that's £920 a year, so £2760 in three years, so it's not impossible, but yes it will be hard

by that time you could get even more if you move somewhere else and get a paper round that pays more or something. also if i were you i wouldn't plan on what things to get but just say i will be building a enduro or a similar bike. you can't say i'm going to get an slx chainset or somehing because shimano might get a nuclear bomb dropped on them by sram

    just saying :P

and hopefully sram will bomb the shimano factory. sram rule!
i just did that to work out how much it would cost roughly.

went down to lbs this morning, and left the bike their. they said it would be £40 in total for new pads, which is a bloody rip off, and £15 in total to fit them, so that's £55, but luckily my Dad has agreed to pay for the pads, because it's 'maintenance costs' , but i'm paying the £15 to fit and adjust them. They should finish today or tommorow, but i won't be able to ride this weekend anyway, partly because i have 8 pieces of homework, and partly because it's mother's day.
Oh well, finding out that wellgo b-54's will be back in stock at crc on the 30th of april cheered me up!

i know - it was for both brakes though, so 2 pairs of pads but still
You can get them for about £6 each off superstar
the fitting cost (£15 for both brakes) was pretty reasonable though, considering all the problems i've had with alignment and stuff. I asked them why they couldn't get the pads cheaper, and they said it was because they used there 'own' pads, and the fitting cost would be higher if they used another brand they don't usually use. The only reason i took my bike in to get the pads fitted is because i couldn't get the spare pads i already had to fit, but it turned out they were the wrong ones - no wonder they wouldn't go in  I'll just get them from superstar next time, and fit them my self, then take it to the lbs if i have any problems with them rubbing and stuff

Yeah pads should cost (from superstar) around £12..... £40 is a bloody rip off!

And fitting is simply pushing them in the right way.....1 minute job

Aligning is pretty simple aswell, you just need some patience.

So all in all you got charged £55 for something which should cost between £10-20.

 I would leave you LBS! haha

fitting and aligning pads is one of the easiest jobs out there. you just go ripped off dude

I know. at superstar, you can get 4 pairs for £18. At my stupid lbs you only get one pair for more than that
I could of fitted them but the ones i had were the wrong ones, and i didn't have time to order them off superstar. With the alignment, they were rubbing constantly on both sides, so there was no space to move the old pads around. Anyway it doesn't matter, because my dad payed for the pads  i'm ordering a 4 pack of organic pads from superstar, so i have spares for next time, and it doesn't matter if they wear down quickly because they're organic - at that price, who cares?! and they'll be more powerful too, so it's all good :D

And i'm considering upping the front disc to a 180mm superstar rotor, so what adaptor would i need? the recons are IS mount, so would this work?

    what brakes have you got?

    JamesBrckmn Posts: 1,360
Jay, there juicy 3's, and they are post mount, but they have an adaptor because the forks are IS mount

and mrfmilo, i would leave my lbs, but the only other one around here, if you'd believe it, is even more overpriced  and all the people who work there are orange owning snobby idiots

on crc there isn't a front IS to PS adapter for 180mm rotors

    not everythings on crc  : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/+20mm-Disc-Rotor- ... 45fedcbef7
with this one you don't take off the is to pm adaptor, you just put it between the fork and original caliper adaptor, so it should work.

    Aren't Avid's 185mm not 180mm?!

dont use two adapters  that is really stupid, it over complicates things and voids both brake and fork warrenty. i have a is to pm 180mm i could send you for abit of cash

Any reason why you're upping your disc size?
I'm guessing at 14 you aint gonna weight that much, so you don't need the extra power.
All you're going to do is add weight whilst reducing the modulation, controll and feel of your brakes.
Just some food for thought, i'm around 10 stone and i just downsized from 180 to 160...

Yeah, Juicy 3's might lack adjustment and reliability, but once set-up right they have (generally) more than enough power

I suppose. But next time i get new pads i'll get superstar organic ones, for that extra bit of power and feel, and who cares if they don't last as long- they don't cost £20 each!

I've got my bike back from the lbs now, and the wheels run so well! I'm about half way through bedding them in- they're more powerful than they were before, but i still can't endo at all, and i can only skid if i use two fingers. How long should it take to bed in pads? i've been doing the thing when you accelarate to about 20mph, then brake hard with both brakes, but without locking up the wheels, at least 10 times- should it take this long?
