That’s my dilemma. I’ve already fitted a slimmer Zipp post with a shim despite Scott’s advice to the contrary, so i’d Be worried this would be a backward step

Just replaced a zero100 for this. Happy with cockpit so it stays. Cheaper than the alu predecessor.

Never underestimate the difference a good seatpost can make, swapping out my alu 3T for alu Zipp has been night and day, i was ready to stop riding my Scott SL before that change, also a good quality alu will be better than a cheap carbon hands down.

How the hell is that supposed to work if seatposts are the same diameter?
And is your bike an offspring of Scott CR1 and Fuji SL ?

Diameter may be the same but the materials and therefore their properties will be different, not only alloy to CF, but alloy to alloy, cheap posts will use lower grade alloys.

Carbon seatposts will vary in wall thickness, fibre alignment, fibre modulus, matrix (resin) properties etc.
Aluminium seatposts are actually made from one of a large number of different aluminium alloys, which can have quite different properties; check out this link for a flavour. Wall thickness will also vary.

Some nice Shimano hydraulic prices at Merlin? eg. £260 for a set of 505 levers and calipers, post or flat mount.

Almost makes it worth sourcing a nice frame and building up a bike yourself, if you already have some kit in your "spares box/shed," or buy a bargain road bike with non-hydraulic disc and convert it.

    https://www.merlincycles.com/merlin-axe ... 95581.html £800 for 105 hydraulic alloy frame bike

For anyone who is interested, at £49.20, the CycleOps Wind Trainer is currently the cheapest turbo trainer at Halfords - http://www.halfords.com/cycling/turbo-trainers/trainers/cycleops-wind-trainer

This trainer is £40 and more expensive elsewhere. The price will likely go up if they sell a few.

Possibly a perfect starter set for my caadx that's coming with no wheels which has 135 rear spacing. Seems like they come with skewers, any reason these won't fit?

Wheels are apparently 4.5Kg with tyres
    Front - 2160 gr
    Rear - 2360 gr

    Tyres are 700g each, that's still a 3kg wheelset
    At least they're only £70.

And your CAADX will come with a Road groupset. I'd guess this has a MTB hub so that could scupper things unless you go for a 11-34 road cassette that fits on a MTB hub but works on road gears. But you'd spend as much on the cassette as the wheelset.

3kg is about double what I'd like and even realistically I'd be keener on 1700g or less, I'll keep looking I think.

Just in case you aren't on their mailing list, London Road and XLA bikes are £600 for the basic model at DFS, good luck getting a seat post that doesn't slip on a LR. ;)

Maybe, just maybe worth buying and then grabbing a pair of hydraulics from Merlin in their sale? Oh, except it's just dawned on me as I type that Merlin's hydraulic disc sale is Shimano and these bikes are SRAM Apex... Might not work together very well!

Oh, good spot, thank you - will stock up in this heat, after the commute in, I appreciate a half tab /100ml mix. Probably overkill, but I notice the difference when I don't have them.

Just bought this and it is a fair bit longer than the original on my bike (bianchi impulse) . It fits fine and I can set it for my saddle height. Any issue with using a longer seat post (other than excess weight?)

Only if you have loads of post in the seat tube, watch for the post going below the top cage bolt hole and then tightening the bolt, risking damage to the post.

Still can't decide whether to order one for my Voodoo, been thinking of a carbon post upgrade for over a year, but it's never been high on the "must have" priority list.

As long as you maintain the minimum engagement. Measure from the bottom to the line, then back the same from your tube to the new cut. Add a bit on for ease of mind.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Didn't have no issues with that on both of mine, had a Selcof seatpost on the one I broke and have an FSA on the other.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Note that the minimum insertion spec for a seatpost can be different from the minimum insertion spec for the frame.

I did manage to kill a frame once and it looked like running too short a seatpost was a contributory factor - the alu developed a fatigue crack shortly below the seatpost clamp - it seemed like a longer seatpost would have spread the load and reinforced the frame in that area.

Fortunately, the bike's manual specified a surprisingly small amount of seatpost as the minimum insertion and it was covered by warranty, and I now run a considerably longer seatpost in the replacement frame.

As I recall that seatpost had about 9cm of insertion, and the manual specified a minimum of 6cm.
