p.s. 2.0 all round is ok isnt it? 1.8 is more for very extreme situations? Or should i go 1.8 rear and 2.0 front?

Hard to say. I go with wide my my Maxxis stuff. Seems to give better side grip, but depends on the tyre and what you ride. I run 2.35 on both front & rear.

I don't know if I'd benefit from thinner on the front. Just seems better to have something wide to roll over big roots than some stick like thing that could get caught in a rut. But don't know really. 1.8 would seem thin to me, but that's just me.

I've always just used the 2.0, they're not particularly big.

Well size wise it depends on the rider and the trails. In surrey hills the smallest i'd go is 2.2 a 2.3 or 2.4 would still roll well in winter but the big sizes in swinley will definetly slow you down.

And back on my XC bike in France very flat, fields i'd roll on michelin 1.7.. and same bike here in surrey hills michelins 2.1.

A 2.0 should roll fine every where, and still offer decent grip on slippery roots or rocks.

Fire XCs are good only for the bin, totally useless tyres. All IMO of course, you can ask 50 people and get 50 different answers, otherwise there wouldn't be so many tyres out there![/quote]

I agree with the above comment both about the fire xc's ( used to ride and now hate them ) and also about that everyone will try diffrent things and have diffrent opinions.

I ride Kenda nevgal front ( dual compound) and love these, they are an all rounder and only struggle in the super wet stuff. These are also good on the back.
I however run maxxis minion on the back simply because i have been through the sidewall on the Kendas on the back. i run 2.35 but I have a long travel bike.

For your bike i would suggest 1.8 to 2.2's more tyre more supension and more grip IMO.

The best things to do though is try a few things and then decide.

Ok guys, I take your point. What I actually need is two bikes :) One for my monthly xc rides and one for out and out trail fun - i don't ride enough trails.. must try harder! :) Only been to surrey hills once and pooped my pants as it was my first time on a bike in many years :)

or 2 sets of wheels, one for mud or trail one for xc, migt be an option.

Not really about MTFUing, the MTB would be the easy option, the road is better training, just CBA to spend hours cleaning the MTB when I'm going to sell it in the next month or so!

wedgy trail could be good to try again... as well as that super fast flowy one we took after the road climb at the bottom of wedgy.

And thel33ter need to do wedgy with only one stop this time.

just hope it ll be rather dry, like last weekend. 8)

  • Greetings all,

can only do sunday this week, keep the posts coming with times and all that.
Will be having a few bevvies saturday so wont be up for anything too tiring, saying that I'm never up for anything too tiring.

catch up with you all soon.
  • Ok Sunday meet Westcott 10am opposite Nirvana on the green, going to go Ranmore first then out towards peaslake probably winterfold, so may well be able to do wedgy on the way.

going to do some of the downhill bits over winterfold way( dependant on how we get on ) This could be a fairly long one just to warn you.
May well change the plan if the weather is poo all the way through till then, the weather forecast is looking fairly unsettled but possibly ok for Sunday
However if plans change we can still meet westcott as its a good location to go to several directions.

Is anyone able to ride Friday ( not thursday ) afternoon ?
