Doubt we'll be organised tomorrow before early afternoon so will probably just rest and let stuff dry out a bit (hopefully) for Sunday.

Footy'n'beer and can't be arsed meant lazy day and sorting out the creaking bushings instead. Hopefully it's sorted else it's a full strip down and do a proper service on all the pivots and links. Put it off as damn SC grease gun is a git and not got it working yet. Reading around seems loads have the same problem.

Tomorrow, no one round Surrey Hills?

SH was pretty good - still some muddy boggy bits but plenty that aren't and the rain held off all day.

Will do Swinley and see if I can get out one evening for some SH stuff. Some bits I want to check out.

Expecting a fair bog at Swinley but maybe it's dried out a bit over the last day or so.

Excellent ride, lots of mud and slime. Biggest group we've had for a while, even had some glamour for a change.

Good stuff, and that rare creature the Lesser Spotted Popstar was to be seen out there at times.

Did a few loops round Deerstalker and Babymaker after we lost you, went and gawped at my drop, one person actually did it (not me of course), then trundled back.

@sobol - missed you Sat, but didn't have the car until after 1 and only got out there 2.30. Bumped into others though and had a quick session.

You didn't really lose me, unless that was the intention, took Jessica up Labyrinth and then the scenic route back to the carpark.
I thought I mentioned it to someone when you guys said you were planning a few ups and downs.

Yeah, knew you'd headed off, hence sent her that way. Weren't sure if we'd catch up with you so ended up doing a few loops. Ended up pretty shattered not long after.

I managed to get out at 7:00 in the end. It was great, while the rest of the area watched 22 footballers fall over, fein injury and generally try and cheat their way into the Euro semis, I had the trails all to myself. I literally didn't see another person on the trails.

What's going on with those trees being cut down around gully? Are they mad?

Yep. When I was there Thursday the entrance by the manhole was closed off, as was the muddy short cut.

As for mad - it's just forestry work. They've come to maturity and they're harvesting the trees.

  • Hi everyone it's been a while since I've been out with you guys for a ride, can't wait to join you for a Surrey Hills blast soon. I've nearly solved all the problems I had with my XC bike, the one remaining problem being indexing the gears which I attempted and made a right balls up of (I swear I did exactly what the bloke off of the video did!). I can get it done at the Cycle Surgery near my work for £20 but I was just wondering if it's the sort of thing one of you guys could do really easily before a ride? If not no worries I'll drop it by the shop soon.

One thing I'm really worried about though is my fitness, I haven't cycled up a hill for a few months now since I got my DH bike! You guys are going to kill me! I'm missing Surrey Hills though and riding with you guys so hopefully I'll make it out sometime soon.

Should be some of us who can fiddle with gears reasonably well, but allow a bit of time. Was a bit of that going on this weekend during out long fettling and waiting before we finally set off (only for me to stack it nicely shortly after).

Howard at P&S or one of his little helpers should be able to do it as well for a small fee or donation I suspect.

Still need to do mine properly. I'm just tweaking mine at present, but will probably strip it and redo the gears with new cable etc as the outers at least are splitting & fraying at the shifter end and things aren't quite right on the front mech on the big bike (tempting me still to go 1x10, but the 2x10 chain guide has made things a lot better).

Thing I've found is undo the cable entirely, reset and start from scratch is the best way to index.

With your DH/freestylie skills there's some interesting stuff developing in the hills that you'd have fun on.
  • Sounds good, this weekend I'm Forest of Deaning (all welcome to join) Saturday and then it's Silverstone on Sunday and maybe get out for a bit after that so I might see if can make it the week after. What sort of stuff are you talking? New trails or jumps and drops added to existing trails?

Had a great run around Swinley last Saturday with my 12yr old Son. When we went a few weeks ago, he was too scared to do Corkscrew, but this time he MTFU and loved it - had to do it 5 times in the end! I was really proud of him later as he went round Stickler and Tank Traps at really good speed. Was particularly glad to see him standing up and moving the bike around more and feathering the brakes on the loose/gravelly downhill bits.

Also found an area between Corkscrew and Seagull which was like a circular mound with loads of steep runs down the mound into the middle where there was a tabletop type area - does this bit have a name?

Think we are now at a level where we could join you on a run and not embarass ourselves too much...!

Havent yet gone all the way down to Deer Stalker and Labyrinth though - thats on the agenda soon.

Evans Rideit at Dorking for me this Saturday - will be my first time round Leith Hill. Hopefully the following weekend I will get a pass for Swinley again, then the week after I am off to White Peak in Derbyshire with my son for a Saddle Skedaddle MTB weekend.
