Another 10 minute job taking me all day. Replacing gear cables (inner and outers). Okay so I'm learning as I go. Got to the point where I realise I don't have cable cutters. Improvisation time.

Looking at the state of the old cables, it's no wonder my shifting has been so crap.

It wasn't crap. It was just plain embarasing.

Make sure after you cut outers you fit those ferets well, otherwise outer casing will split within few weeks. Happened to me, so now riding wife's bike.

Aha, just realised Dremel could be the cutting solution.

And yeah, got all the bits and pieces to protect the ends. Only thing is I'm reusing the adjusters. Cleaned them thoroughly and they seem okay. Also turns out the adjuster on the front mech had snapped the cable outer due to the crap way the suspension bends the cable at that point. Not sure what I can do about that. Wonder if I can do without it entirely and just have the adjusted on the lever.

Probably got a spare adjuster in my toolbox I'll check tomorrow. Didn't think front mechs had adjusters though.

They don't normally but mine does. Seems mostly just a point to route the cable but also adjusts tension. It's screwed into the rear triangle which is the part that moves.

The adjuster is okay, it's just the cable outer and end that sat in it had split all the way through due to bending action. Wouldn't have been long before the cable itself snapped probably.

@MbElf thel33ter and I will be at Swinley tomorrow, meet you there. I'm having a lie in in the morning, and bacon.

The A 322 is closed somewhere around Bagshot, so you might need a detour, best leave a bit of extra time.

Not sure, the l33ter just sent me a text. Between M3 and Swinley somewhere, presumably they'll have some diversion boards up. I'll be picking him up earlier and will give you a call if it looks like a problem.

    7am, 8am starts... !!!

Enjoy anyway. I'll be in bed. Then nice cooked breakfast.

So, next weekend, anyone up for Surrey Hills (at a sensible time)?

These people are obviously insane fanatics. Swinley only starts at 12, much more civilised.

Next week SH good for me. Normal 10ish start I presume?

A322 is closed here - Smaller clickly linky thingy

Diversions will send you all round the world so M3 junction 4 would be quicker.

    Copied from STW:

Directions: Take A331 signed for Camberley, Wokingham, Sandhurst. At The Meadows (where A30 crosses) take A321 past Tesco/M & S, looking for A3095 Bracknell. At large roundabout where B3430 (Nine Mile Ride) crosses, turn right signed The Look Out, and it will be on right hand side.

And SH next week sounds good, haven't been for ages. Maybe Rich will be around to show us all these new bit's he's been mentioning.

Hmm, 12 start. Might be possible. Just I can see me fiddling with the indexing for ages and then get out there and find it's not right. Will see.

    10ish next week sounds good.

@DK if you come send a text as it looks like there will be a lot of people in the carpark and a bit of a shortage of parking.
We are going to ride down as it's only about a 10 min ride from my flat. If you want to park here and ride down with us let me know.

Fantastic ride today. Someone decided we should join the fast group, cause they only had 3 people in the first place. So we rode, fast, and non-stop. I still outpaced people on my SS 8) It was a great route, with a few new bits. Although everything felt new on this bike.

Cooldad even pretty much kept up :)

    Pity you missed it DK.

Most excellent adventure in the woods today , our leader really knew his stuff !

We ( the MTB crowd ) were expecting 4 hours of stop start / standing around , so decided to go for a ' decent ' Tunnel Hill ride first .

Oh my word , how wrong were we ? That's one of the hardest rides a lot of us have done in Swinley in ages !

It took me 3hrs to get off my sofa afterwards !

Good to see you all .

Sounds like it was a good thing I missed it! First ride back after a break it would have killed me (okay I was skiing almost solid for two weeks, but different muscles).

Anyway, never got out in the end. A weekend of endless hassles. Trips to various places to get stuff, both bike and home related, only to find places out of stock, stuck in B&Q car park for ages trying to get out, and then doing the bike taking ages trying to get the damn cable into the front mech clamp (bad design making it near impossible to get fingers, pliers, etc in there), making mistakes and restarting, then finally onto indexing, which took ages as I expected. Still think the front mech is not going to drop to the granny though once I ride it.

Wish I could get out during the week to make up, but it would cost so much money. Tempted though, even if it screws them up at work.

Hope to get out both Sat and Sun though.

Eventually our lil mob of 3 started 7.30-14.00. While those lazy two crashed into sofas after ride, I had to attend B-day party of Mother-in-law. 2hour drive through London traffic to that place, partying and drive back. Home at 1am. Sick of feeling being superhuman. At least Popstarlet behaved well throughout all day.

Had another look at my brakes yesterday when I was doing the BBQ. Those formula pads must be made of butter. Totally ruined after what, 8-10 rides? If I was buying OEM pads that'd cost me something like £4 per ride in brake pads.
