Does anyone use frame protection for cable rub? I know there's usually no paint to protect on a Ti frame, but I'm thinking that maybe the cables will rub on the frame and damage the metal in some small way? I tried to put some patches on put they wouldn't stick to the metal 8)
If there are any long time Ti frame owners here who can testify that there is no build up of damage then I won't bothere.

I've had my frame for about 7 weeks and I've already scratched up the head tube where the cables touch the frame.

I do have protectors wrapped around the cables where they touch the frame, but the cables have managed to touch the frame in other places too.

I'm not too bothered though. I'm more annoyed when I scratch my shifters.

Thanks to NapD I now know these frames are unpainted. Have they no coating at all? Are they just the polished raw material?

I only ask because I'm interested and they are lovely looking bikes.

Most ti frames are unpainted, not even coated with anything. If you're unlucky to scuff one you can just buff it out with some fine emery cloth.

I use helicopter tape patches to prevent cable rub, your frame will probably have some sort of oil coating use IPA or some such to clean the frame before apllying the pads and they'll stick no bother

most aren't polished, they tend to have a brushed finish, that way if they get marked you can use a scotch abrasive pad and get it looking like new again.

Depends what finish you have. If you have a bead blasted finish the frame has a dull grey finish. If you then sand that it'll just make the frame shiny rather than return it to the bead blasted finish.

Use clear fablon from your local DIY shop and cut up patches as needed.
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

  • Here's my Ti bike. Frame by Marco Bertoletti (Italy). Wheels DT Swiss rims with WR Compositi hubs and a Campag Chorus triple chainset because I need every bit of help I can get these days!

Ermmm... Care to give me your professional view on this type of outdoor pursuit

  • Yes hopper1 the taller headtube was a specified part of the custom build as I have to be a bit careful with my back, so it allows a more upright position for riding. It's accentuated by the fact that the cross bar is set a bit lower as well so that the step over isn't too high. It does look a bit odd but it fits me perfectly and I absolutely love it!

We should do a club kit....

Although it does advertise to thieving types that our metal bikes are really plush exotica.

I'd love a ti club cycling top. Just got my free C+ one and it is the first and only insignia type top I have (S/S cylce jersey I mean).
All my other ones are tesco/no brand cheapies.

    I want some personalised ones!!!!

(anyone care to design one and look at a group buy?? Must fit the modern metal chic theme).

thanks Barrie, don't know how I missed this reply. I will try cleaning the area by the cables thoroughly and try reapplying the patches :D

I also have a sheet of fablon that I bought to protect the inner sides of the forks and downtube of my carbon bike, but would prefer to use the thicker frame patches for the cable rub.

What are those cables? They look a bit unusual.

Not a lot to report on that really... which can only be a good thing - it's tiny, stupidly light, looks good, fairly cheap and holds the seatpost in place. Bonzer 8)

I did not go to the bother of removing the cable to fit them I simply split them down one seam and used aircraft grade double sided tape to keep them from sliding down the housing, so far works a charm.

My google powers are weak today, got a product name for them? Searched for Jagwire stuff but that particular product doesn't come up.

    thanks :)

I think these are the newer version, already have a split in them that securely refastens around the cables - http://www.sprockets.uk.com/576/Jagwire-Tube-Tops.html
