  •

    must... resist... impulse... purchase!

Seriously though, will have to think about that. Don't want to overdo it with the orange. Will sort out the wheels, forks etc first, then see how it looks. Also been looking at getting the silver bit on the SLX cranks anodized orange if it's possible.

Cheers for the link though :)

get some crankskins for your cranks, they come in loads of diferent colours and keep your cranks looking good. as for the wheels, good lord they are expensive but deffinitly worth it, one day i might be able to afford some, unless the LBS get them in
  • i think the colour of the bike lends itself Very nicely to Bright orange cables!! would look awesome!!!
am struggling to resist buying the Blue version for mine (builders tea coloured Soul) so wrong but just So right!!!

Oooooo, thanks for that, I'd not thought of them. Not so keen on the patterned ones, but the translucent orange ones look like just what I need.
Do you happen to know where I can order a set in the UK? or do they have to be ordered from the US crankskins.com site?
  • I'm thinking, keep the white bars/stem/seatpost. Get the white rims with the orange hubs/spokes. Black Pikes with orange decals. Orange cables. Orange Crankskins Then maybe look at a set of Orange superstar Grips.
  • that will look stunning!

  • oooooh, priiiddddy!

I find the problem is finding orange bits that are the same kind of orange. Chris King seem to have their own definition of what Orange is, and some manufacturers try to match that, others try to match the Crank Bros Orange they use on their Iodine bits, others use varying different shades of orange from almost brown to almost gold. Then there is the plastic bits, like cables, which will be what most people would consider to be a "proper" orange colour.
    Proper PITA at times.

That said, you may get away with it a bit more on your frame because it looks like the shade of orange changes slightly depending on the light.

was never keen on orange but anodised orange is rather lovely. i was gonna buy them i9 ex team wheels mentioned above to go on it but cant justify building it as i dont think id use it much. i do love mad looking bikes though and this brown 456 is going to look extremely mad methinks.

reckon these built up with white halo hubs would look nice and cost a fraction of the i9,s
to be honest the thing that stopped me buying them ex team ones was the fact they seem to have had quite heavy use and with the rims being dented it put me right off

  • I know what you mean. I was looking at those wheels last night on the JRA website and on the enlarged picture, you can see the the rear rim has at least couple of big (well, I'd say they were big) dents in it.
Course, I could always ask them to fit a new rim to the rear. £71 for a ZTR flow rim.

My other option is DT Swiss EX1750. Not worth £600 imho but I know I can get them for a bit less than that.

  • Just spoken to JRA. They have agreed to replace the rear rim on the ex-team wheelset without any labour charges. They've been serviced before being put up for sale, and any worn parts were replaced.
This means I can get the wheelset for £479 delivered.
Decision has been made. If they're still there by Payday, they are all mine.

Oh yeah, come to papa!! :D

BTW did you ask them to check the bearings? That's the only thing that I would ask them to check/replace.

Good idea! Email sent off to JRA now to see if they'll do that for me.
Those bronze hubs are pretty tasty. They'll look good on the Ragley.

They told me everything has been serviced and they are running smooth as a smooth thing covered in baby oil.

Edit: Update from JRA. They wont take a deposit. Pay in full or not at all.
Fair enough response tbh. They've got no reason to hold them a couple of weeks for me when they could well sell them tomorrow.

Just so you all know. If you buy these wheels before me, I'll hunt you down and set fire to your dog!

  • Yeh, I actually ordered the saddle before christmas when they were waiting for stock. Was told 3-4 weeks, which turned into more like 12. Then I gave up and got my brown one instead. As for the grips, they do look nice, but I decided against them because white grips end up looking hacky really fast.

I see you had an issue with your Thor Forks. I'm still trying to make my mind up which ones I should go for.

I do like the look of this DT Swiss EXC 150 which is massively reduced at the moment, but I think I'd have compatibility issues as I'm pretty sure it works on the 15mm system (my new hubs are 20mm). Maybe they'd be suited for your build though? Not sure if they are any good. Most reviews say they are great, but too pricey.

Should all be coming together in the next 2-3 weeks if I can ever decide on the forks
  • Well, it's all coming together now.

I've been saving up my pennies like a good boy and have now ordered the following upgrades:

Pike 454 coil u-turn forks and some custom orange decals.
    DT Swiss EX1750 wheelset
    X-0 Tango Shifters
    X-0 Tango Rear mech
Avid Code Brakes (white) with 185mm rotors
RaceFace AM Chainset (orange) with team chainrings
    RaceFace Atlas FR Bars (orange)
    KMC X-10 SL chain (silver)
    xt cassette
    FSA Orbit MX Headset
    Ergon GA1 (white) Enduro Grips
    Schwalbe Fat Albert Tyres

It should all be arriving bit-by-bit over the next week or so and I'll be fitting it as it arrives.

To say I'm rather excited may be an understatement. :D

Ha ha - I bet you're like a big kid now arent you?

God wish list of parts - going to be sweet when it all arrives and is fitted.

I still maintain that waiting for shiny new parts to arrive is like being 8 years old on Xmas Eve.... :D

nice kit 8) love the look of x0, would love some for the maxlight, in redwin red
  • Those bars are VERY wide! (785mm)

I'm fairly broad in the shoulders so I'll give them a go. Raceface have put markings on each end showing you where to cut for different lengths though should I need to.
