So, I sold the Commie. Bit of a shame, but DH wasnt really working out for me. Nothing to do with the sport, more the logistics of my days off and stuff. Plus I need the money for my top secret build.
Aaaaanyway, this left me in a bit of a situation, after selling the commie, I'm bikeless. The initial plan was to sell all the bits off and buy a 2nd hand XC bike to get me through winter.
Then I saw the new 456 summer season and had a cunning plan! So here it is:
Pre-Ordered a 456 Summer season in Orange
Going to get a Deore V-brake groupset from Merlin. I'll use the v-brakes on the commuter and everything else on the 456.
Then, I'm keeping the following bits from the commie and sticking them on the 456
Marzocchi 66rc2x forks (150mm)
Diabolus bars and Vice stem
Freedom front and singletrack rear wheels
Mono M4 Front and Saint Rear Brakes with 203mm rotors.
New Headset
New Bel-Air RL saddle
New FSA FR-230 Freeride Seatpost
Job done!
Will get some pics up when the frame arrives.
Initial Comments/suggestions?

sadly no, Commie only lasted a month.
I bought it thinking I'd like to get into DH, and to be fair, the bike was perfect for it. Unfortunately though, DH just dosent fit in with my lifestyle (I know that sounds ghey). It's just that I like to wake up one morning and think, today I'll go for a ride, and then just go.
With DH I had to fnid out who was out and where, then make sure the wife didnt have the car and so on. Either way, at the moment, it's just not my bag. But I'm too hard on my bikes to go for another 100mm race bike like the pinnacle. As I'm not made of money, the 456 seemed like the sensible choice.0 -
CWNT......just think.......you could have had my old Enduro......shame0

i got a cheap cane creek headset on ebay for £15.20 - bargain! Should be a cracker!0

Change of plan!
Couldn't resist spending some more cash
Drive will now be full SLX.
Saddle may now be an On-one bignose. (sadly, I suffer terribly from numb boIIocks on long rides if the saddle isnt right  and the bignose looks quite comfy)
Seatpost will now be FSA FR-270 in white.
Already had some white Peaty grips which I'm in the process of cleaning up now.
Headset is a WTB Grease Guard. I like the idea of how they work, and for £20 it's worth a punt.
White V8 Pedals
Finally, just to tie it all together I ordered a White Alligator Sleek-Glide Sealed Gear Cableset.
Hope Freedom Front wheel with 2.35 Schwalbe Muddy Mary and DH tube
Sun Sungletrack Rear wheel with 2.35 Schwalbe Muddy Mary and DH Tube
With the Forks and the wheels, it's certainly not going to be light, but it should be able to take a good hammering.
Just can't wait for it to arrive and get it built up.0 -

Exactly, I was worried no-one else would get that. Having a DH bike would be awesome, dont get me wrong. But as it stands, with all my money going into my long term build, the commie was my only bike, and it was starting to get me down not having the freedom to just get up and go.
Even though a summer season with a 6" fork will be super slack, It's just what I'm looking for at the moment.0 -
-
Me too. But I've already got a set of V8s lying round in the garage that came off my old bike, so they are free0

Have you got handlebars? If you haven't, i'd get these: http://www.on-one-shop.co.uk/acatalog/i ... CGRCW.html0

Sorted for bars cheers. Using a set of these that I had already http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=328010

So, I had a think about it, checked up on the geometry of the 2, and have now changed my order from the 456 summer season to the regular 456 in Brown.

I might upgrade the forks and wheels at a later date, but to be honest, this is going to be a bike for ragging about. The wheels are very strong, but very heavy. The fork is the same.0 -
Update.
Lots of boxes turning up at my house in the last couple of days.
Last ones to arrive were my cranks, shifters and charge spoon saddle.
I now have all my bits apart from one, THE FRAME!!! GAH!!!!! SOOOOOOO FRUSTRATING! Ordered on Tuesday and the last update from the courier was that it had "arrived at hub". That was at 9pm last night so was hoping it would be here today. Guess I'm going to have to wait until Monday now, which means I'll not be able to get the BB and headset fitted until next Thursday (due to work).

Yeh, be good to see some pics of it built up. I was half considering it but then I thought what on earth goes with brown - apart from earth. The other bike on the list is the Cotic Soul in Orange which might go with white or black I guess, and those orange Crank Bros wheels!Commencal Meta 5.5.1

After opening my cranks, it appears I've been sent the wrong ones. Looks like they sent the 22-36-bash version instead of the 22-32-44 version I ordered.
Just trying to figure out what I want to do about it now.
The shifters I bought were the 9x3 versions, but I know they can be adapted by using the limit screws.
I'm just wondering how much I need the really big gears now as I've got most of the ratios covered by having the slightly bigger middle ring.
I'm tempted to just leave it and see how I get on. Does anyone know if I can just replace the bash with a big ring in future if I need to?0 -

Well, Goodridge braided gear cable outer can be had from CRC for £4.99 per meter, I ordered some last night if that's of any help.
Just waiting for my frame to arrive (should be here tomorrow) then I can crack on with getting it all together.
Hoping to have it all put together by Thursday night so I can go for a ride on Friday morning.0 -
Speccing & building one of these is fun as I'm sure it will be a great trail bike..
Be good to hear about how your 456 rides & where you'll be riding.
Yeah I might get some goodrich gear cable outer, the guides are not stopped on these frames which means continuous outer (keeps mud at bay)
I'll get some action pics when out there0 -
Got home tonight and my frame was waiting for me. All my bits are here so I couldnt help myself, Ihad to quickly throw it together to get a peek at how it's going to look when finished.
Obviously, it's not finished yet.
I have it booked in at the LBS tomorrow to get the headset and BB fitted. Then I'm going to get cracking putting her together properly. Got some more white braided gear outer on the way so I can have 2 continuous sealed units front and rear.
I want either some orange or white braided hoses for the brakes. Think I'm going to use white bars instead of the black ones too.
Steerer looks like it's going to be a little long at the moment, but I'll have a better idea when I get the headset fitted tomorrow.
Your thoughts and opinions are most welcome.0 -
the front end is very high with those forks
apart from that, it very very nice 8)0 -
-
So what do you reckon then, Orange brake hoses or white?
Just ordered a white 50mm Kore stem which will go with a set of white FSA Maximus bars and black grips with orange lock-rings.0 -
i think white brake hoses becase you have white gear cable outers0

+1 ALWAYS coordinate brake and gear lines. My 456 has braided for both and the poplock line.0 -
thats fantastic looking.0
-
nice ! with more "bounce" & burlier
I put white brake hoses on there 'cause that's what the factory elixir brakes had.. don't see the point with changing them. They look ok & are functional.
Gold braided hoses would look bling but a bit pointless (I don't think goodrich make gold - also goodrich aren't compatible yet with elixirs - pity)
tell me what tyres to fit for larger volume ?0 -
Well the tires I have on there are Schwalbe Muddy Mary 2.35 DH and I certainly wouldn't want any bigger than that.
Had an absolute stroke of luck with that chainset. I actually ordered the triple but was sent the double by mistake. Once I had a look at it, I decided I'd be much better off with the double and thankfully, I am allowed to keep it. Ebay seller is Bikebitz, thoroughly nice chap and some of the cheapest prices I've found for new stuff.
I built it to be a bit of a hard hitter. I have no need for an all round xc bike as I'm building another xc bike at the moment so I just wanted this to be strong and fun, which it should be
Can't wait for friday now to try her out properly.0 -
well, I think I'm going to try fitting the headset and BB myself
LBS have today told me that their mechanic is off sick, so it'll be Friday before they can fit the bike in. The other LBS can't fit me in until Thursday.
It looks like the threads for the HTII BB are clear, so I'll go get a BB spanner from the shop at lunch. As for the headset, couple of blocks of wood FTW!
Anyone had any problems screwing on the BB on a newer 456 frame?0 -
Cracking bike CWNT - awesome 8)
BB is a piece of piss, make sure you grease threads sparingly, it aids the fitting. Just take your time and go slowly....... and don't overtighten
Can't help you with headset, I bought a cheap press from CRC that gives me piece of mind, think it was about £35 or so...... but if you use wood, use softwood like spruce etc.0 -
cheers dude.
Bike was only booked in at LBS because the guy said that most On-one bikes they'd seen require reaming. Figured I may as well make use of their press while it's there.
Slow day at work today so I'll read some of the techincal stuff, watch some of the youtube guides etc and give it a crack later tonight.
Oh, and I decided on white hoses, but not sure how they work. For my Mono M4 do I just buy a length of hose and replace my existing hose with it, or do I need to get the fittings and stuff too?
What about the Saint Brake? same questions.
Sorry, it's all new ground for me is this building lark. Fun though :P0
