I have a trek 7.9fx (with the 7.5 running gear so 48 top cog ) 25 mm tyres would this be ok for an entry into some of these 100km sportitives or not? not looking to light up the time sheets just finish for fun and satisfaction or something like that.

Most do have a number of distances to try. For example, HOTA had a 50k route. There are a few flatter sportives but most pack in all the hills in the area for a 'challenge'.

A lot of cycling is about confidence. Once you know you can do the distance it all seems that much easier. Get out and start building up the weekend mileage bit by bit.

The early season sportives are actually a good place to start as most people are at best a bit rusty, as the season goes on the standard improves so probably gets progressively harder to start from scratch.

my first sportive (of the 3 I've done) was a 100 miler which possibly wasn't the brightest thing i've ever done

As JG says, most will have a 100k or shorter as well as the main route, so just pick one & go for it.

I don't think I'm fit enough, because doing some sportives is appealing. Longest I've ever ridden in one go is 70 miles though, and I suck on hills, so the longer or more challenging ones would be... um... a challenge.

However, there is one that starts just a few miles from my home, near Lancaster; Wrynose or Bust. Probably not the 115 mile version, but the late-starting 50 miler might be fun.

True enough. I really should get my old road bike fettled. (According to Cycling Weekly, having a grotty old steel framed bike with mudguards on for winter use = real cyclist.)

Rather fancy the idea of trying a Sportive. Have never cycled more than 50 miles in a day (and that was 20 years ago) BUT I'm currently commuting 140 miles per week, at reasonable speed and without much difficulty, so am hopefully fairly fit.

Assuming I don't get the chance to do any extra training (other than chasing small children around the house) what would be a sensible distance to attempt? I want a bit of a challenge, but I'd also like a sensible chance of completing the distance.

NB: I do have a proper road bike; I'm not planning to do this on a Brompton!
