Watching Cadel Evans' heightened emotions on the podium, good for him. And good for Australia too. 8)

It would have been a pity had Evans finished his career without a big victory (OK, he got the TdF stage, but was cheated out of standing on the podium).

I'd like to see him take Lombardy or L-B-L in the rainbow jersey, preferably after a solo attack.

I was rooting for Cancellara but happy to see Evans get it.

+1 Again on both scores there.

Cancellara is easily the most exciting rider in the peleton. By miles. He gets me all giddy with excitement when he starts pumping at the pedals and throwing out some ridiculously large amount of watts. Great to watch.

I've said before here I think Evans should focus more on 1-dayers. He did well, as did the rest of the team!

  • Thanks Nap D... was thinking that would be another first.

In fact, that was possibly the best one day race of the year!

    Quite.

    Shame about Melbourne!

  • That last lap was a cracker, a good reason to keep it at 200+ Km!
    A real surprise from Evans.

A very good race, a real war of attrition. The best Worlds are always on tough circuits where the bunch is slowly worn down until the last hour when it becomes open warfare.

Congratulations to Evans, a stunning move and he won in style. Although several riders could have won today, Evans took his chance but he might not have been the strongest.

Were trade team tactics at play? Breschel seemed to be happy to work for Cancellara and t think Gilbert covered for Evans once.

'ere, I thought the Worlds was a rubbish sprinters race?
Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.

Same trade team, so probably the case. I don't think Silence-Lotto would've been happy if he'd brought the other riders back to Evans.
  • JC didn't even let Eurosport stay to put the results on the screen, and the studio after didn't cut back to Mendrisio pictures for the results.

    Two Brits finished. Cummings in 52nd @ 5'20" and Hammond in 92nd @ 10'54".
  • Have to say that, in terms of Team GB, this has been a pretty disappointing World's campaign.
It's a long road DB has to travel.

Cadel's run of bad luck is finally ended by gaining a curse!

Gotta wonder what would have happened if Millar had done the TT and Wiggins the RR. Kennaugh the only decent performance of the week.
  • Alexander Kolobnev once again left his more famous team mates eating dust - that's three years in a row he has outperformed the world's best. Is this how good he is when he is not having to follow team orders? The Worlds, the Olympics and now again at the Worlds. Yet with Saxo Bank he is the forgotten man where all the attention is on the Schlecks and Cancellera.

Perhaps he would be better off finding a team with a few less stars?

Kudos to Cadel. Interesting implications for all of those who think they have to leave La Vuelta to prepare for this race.
  • great race, well done evans. Outside the brits there's probably only gilbert or cancellara who would have had me out of my seat cheering for them.

I don't like Cadel, but I don't dislike him either, he's an honest hardworking rider, but give me Valverde any day :P

  • Cancellara was immense on the last climb, ripped the legs off everyone I think, just a shame that everyone then marked him...

    Chapeau Evans though!

If I recall Cancellera kicked to pull back Kolobnev on that climb but he was spent after that. Kolobnev still had the energy to get away again and stay away. As I said above, I don't think Kolobnev gets the recognition he deserves. He consistently makes the telling break and, unlike the Spanish and Italians, has no one to work with him.

Cancellara was so strong but I dont understand why they were all marking him when they knew they could cover him on the climbs. Great win for Evans though especially as he always says "I try to attack if I am able to". All people who race know that if you are on the rivet you can not attack and at best just grapple to follow wheels in the hope the pace will then ease up.

Also the people normally he is supposed to attack have fairly tainted reputations e.g the chicken in the tour and Rebellion in the classics.

  • Full marks to David Harmon. Imagine commentating for over six hours and then being told you're going to miss the five minutes it's all led up to. I would have used much more colourful language at that point... Rainbow coloured might just sum it up.
  • I didn't see any of it 'cos I was working (gona watch back on iplayer :) ) so can someone explain what happened on Eurosport for me? Who's JC? And why did Harmon swear?

I watched Eurosport so didn't hear if Hugh Porter was waxing lyrical this year about Kolobnev's calves?
PS Harmon's right, we should see the podiums not go back to the studio. I've loved it this week when Sean has had to do some fill in while Harmon has a 'natural break' - I can picture him looking like a rabbit in the headlights!
BTW does anyone else think Sean Yates is ringer for Albert Lee?
And Tony Gibb pinched my Hagen Das thing!
