If you really want to try out a powermeter I have a spare wheel I can lend u. It might be useful as it may give you some information on your current form + how that stacks up with whats needed for the sort of ride you plan to make. (the watts from your VO2 test are of some interest regards, so if you have them post them. Caveat that they probably come from a max power test so will be better predictors of a short TT than an endurance event which is why doing some extended training with a powermeter would be useful).

That said, as others on this forum, there are those who take to powermeters and those that dont. You've done pretty well training without one so far, so it may just prove a distraction.

Anyway the offers open if you want to take it up.

As an aside re VO2 and what it may or may not mean here's an interesting note from Joe Friel's blog.

    http://mail.google.com/mail/h/1ctsagdct2vx6/?v=c&th=124bf6deabc689dd

Think a conclusion is that VO2 is a good indicator to differentiate a trained sub-group within an untrained population. But within this group it is not a very good indicator of relative performance.

  • Thanks bahzob for the very generous offer but I'd be happier renting one just in case something happened. I'm sure it wouldn't but who knows.

I think I will probably try one, I'm convinced power is a better training tool than HR. I'm sure it will be a distraction in some ways. I used to be happy with RPE or just speed! I'll see what my coach says of course.

I'm feeling confident today for no reason. I have started a blog the link is below, but time has been short as my little boy has been quite ill. Between being a nurse and training I haven't had much time to post.

Let me know what you think, I promise the posts will get better!

Are you planning to do very long 'distances' on the turbo... like 1/2 distance to see how you are track with the target time?

9 hours at 23mph... takes a bit getting your head around that
  • If it was up to me, Yes.

But it is all up to my coach. I decided when committing to getting a coach what he suggests goes. He isn't a big fan of the turbo, although I'm doing 4 sessions during the week, plus outdoor rides on Saturday and Sunday.

Finding appropiate rides near me is proving a little problematic, there are just too many traffic lights and junctions. At the moment I'm taking my chances but if I end up somewhere unsuitable I've wasted a session.

At the moment I've been doing a mixture of strength, lactate threshold and recovery. I've never been one for recovery rides, or weights, core work and stretching, but he has me doing them all. In fact being told what you are to do really takes the pressure off somehow.

I've never been more daunted by anything. I haven't ever put my name for down for something without some belief I could do it. 23mph feels okay for a while, but nine hours? It's going to be a long journey.

I had an e-mail from Ralph Dadswell, who has the tricycle record and he thinks the stretch from Marlbourgh to Bath is the most testing so I'm going to try and ride that section as a benchmark test early next year.

My Dad is out of hospital for Christmas which great.

    I'm still very daunted

240 miles in 9 hours = 26.66 MPH average, minimum(nonstop). On a bicycle.   Is anyone else doing the math? :? :?

Dennis, you've commented earlier in the thread so I'm surprised you haven't picked up that the aim has been amended to 226 miles. My maths reckons thats a tad over 25mph.

It will be one hell of an achievement and an unlikely one but we should encourage him - one thing that is an absolute certainty is that he won't do it if he doesn't try!
  • Don't forget the route isn't flat, plus traffic lights etc.

I'm not sure of the exact figues until I've done the dry run, but I'll be going a few mphs over the average when on the open roads. I can't get through London with an average speed anywhere near25mph.

O.K. - 226 miles in 9 hours = 25.111 average MPH minimum. This makes it more doable how???? I'm betting that shaved would have trouble completing a 25 mile time trial in less
than one hour let alone hold this speed for 8 more. Support him??? Sure. If he was attempting something that he might actually be capable of. By simply asking the question - can I do this? - he shows he has no idea of what's involved.

It is a record and as such has been done before and can be done again. If you are serious though might be worth looking into getting an escort and the police to close junctions for you, may be an effort to get this but realistically you will need it, you can't be stopping for modern traffic lights in London and have a chance.

LOL at the police closing junctions etc! They wouldn't even do that for the Tour of Britain when it passed through Yorkshire!

Delurking to say this thread is fascinating, particularly given your oxygen consumption figures

Good to hear about your Dad! Hope the icy weather is not curtailing your training plan too much.

    Good luck.

  • Hi All,

I've put together the Just Giving page, albeit in a rush. Remember it is for charity not me, and every penny counts.

Training has been going well, although there is no denying the mountain I have to climb.

My dad had a good Christmas and has been for some short walks.

    Best Wishes

    Alex,

Will you be doing this attempt on your TT bike or regular road bike?

Also you say on your website:
I will need to average 27mph over the 9 hours.

But I make 211 Mile in 9hr 3min 7 sec = 23.31MPH average which is still an outstanding feat, but a much more achievable target.

    Good Luck!

I would imagine the 27mph takes into account stopping at Traffic lights etc but I would think he would need to go a lot faster than 27mph average. It's amazing how much time can be wasted at traffic lights. It might be better to do this challenge on a turbo trainer and just try and cover the distance rather than the actual course or a VR Turbo Trainer and download the course from Google maps.

    Just popped in quickly.

So far I have only managed an average speed of 18 mph getting out of London. So a fair amount of the attempt will be spent well below anything approaching 24mph.

I did the East Surrey Hardriders 30m TT on Sunday at my predicted HR for the attempt. I clocked 1.16 something. Okay for 14th but still not fast enough for the attempt, the good news being I still had something left in my legs, so the base is coming along, now it's time for the speed.

What is the date of the attempt? Orig post said March, but I haven't read every update since then.
