sorted my indexing out and managed to keep all my fingers intact. She normally bites.
  • Figured out why my Alfine hub has been riding like a bag of spanners. Some pillock left the wheel nuts only finger tight after taking the studded tyres off last week

could be worse some absolute moron unhooked my rear canti brake to easily reattach the mudguard when it came loose the other week outside the evans at st pauls only to think 'hmm there's a lot of play in my rear brake... fuuuuuuuuuuuu' as I was headed to monument a good 1/2 mile down the road approaching a set of lights.

luckily there was nothing about and my front brake works fine

Took 4 hours to strip the bike & get rid of all the salt & rubbish on all parts.

Even re-greased the bearings and made a list of replacements for my visit to the LBS (new chain, brake pads etc.).

Lovingly put all back together and test rode to make sure ready to commute.

Tuesday morning: first pedal stroke and chain broke in half

Fitted a tube, tyre and cassette back onto my summer bike as it has been sat in the corner of the bedsit for a couple of months minus the above plus swapped the Tiagra brakes for the spare set of 105 ones I had kicking about.

Well, not exactly fettling but i was intending to replace front mech on my ex freecycle and half knackered hybrid. (i took needing two hands to change gear to be a good sign of wear) so have spent an hour tonight rummaging through my garage:-

Two front chain rings, several rear mechs, lots of cables, several not matching brake calipers, set of hydraulic brakes, brackets, pedals, several lengths of chain, bits of lights, sevaral bearings, some spokes, mudguard stays, bolts, two separate halfs of front mechs that are different ones to the one i need, handebar tape, several tubes, and several empty bottles of bike lube.

Bugger it, need to buy a new one. :-(

Bike two (trek) Lemond Etape (dusty and not ridden much)

The rear hub on the Galaxy that has been a bit erm "rough" for the last few months  finally plucked up the courage to strip/clean/grease and try and put it back together again, feels great now, although now sure how long it will last, there was a lot of metal flakes in the old grease, but at least the bearings were still round :D

(first time its been done in 12k, not holding my breath for another 12k outta it!)

I washed my District today for the first time in months  . It's now very shiny again. After I let it air dry for a moment I adjusted my rear brake and lubed both calipers. Bike's coming apart in a couple of weeks for some proper cleaning/ maintenance.

took the marathon winters off the tricross (noticed I have a missing stud *grrr*) and put the borough cx sport tyres back on, no sense wearing the marathons down anymore until we got more bad weather, changing the tyres was easy too so I'll not be too fussed if I have to do it again in a week or two should the weather turn again.

Apparently, if you write to Schwalbe they will send you a bag of studs. Now there is an offer you can't refuse.

Hope so, I've lost 5 (or rather 4 as I found one of the lost ones!). Currently in a tyre choice pickle as the tourer is waiting for new wheels so I am using the MTB on slicks and wondering every day if I should be putting the Marathons back on.....

I changed the 32mm Borough CX tyres on mine to some cheap Michelin Speedium 2 25mm tyres (£6 each from CRC) and I'm absolutely flying - can't believe the difference! I'll not be going back to those 32s in a hurry...

On a fettling note, now I've got my workstand I can't stop tweaking stuff - my gears have never shifted smoother :D

Stripped, cleaned and rebuilt the headset on the Defy, as it was quite crunchy when the bars turned the past couple of rides.

It's smooth as the proverbial now, but there were quite a few metallic flakes in the old grease so I hope it's all OK.

    Test ride at the weekend.

Cleaned up the 105/Open 4CD front wheel that matches the rear on the Tricross SS and replaced the bearings but I managed to get 11x 3/16" in each side. Ten left too big a gap. Still to put it on the bike though.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

I did that once. The test ride showed up my mistake - sounded like a bag of spanners with each revolution.

I got my pompino back from the friend who had borrowed it...

Got the seatpost out which was jammed due to the seatclamp being put round the post.
Changed the tyres back to 23mm pro3 for the winter
    Fixed computer
Accidentally stripped, cleaned and rebuilt the freewheel, only 4 bearings left over!!!!!
  • Performed life-saving open heart surgery on the Orbea. Replaced the shifters, wheels and derailleurs with those which came with the BeOne, a new cassette, cables and chain and she's as good as new.

The seven speed stuff that was on there was in a terrible state and will be retired. The wheels are buckled front and back. The right shifter was only managing to reach three out of the seven gears. Frankly, trying to get decent quality seven speed parts was nigh on impossible, meaning I was paying for rubbish which jumped under load. Now we're on nice, modern Tiagra.

Needs a test ride before Monday, but it seems ace so far. Just wish I'd remembered to bring home the spare bar-tape I have in the office, as it is I'm going to be riding in with bare bars. It just doesn't look right.

Next stop to upgrade the BeOne to the Microshift Arsis groupset I bought.

Fitted XTR 951 brakes to the bike. I know there total overkill for a commuter bike but I was sick of not having a back brake.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Repositioned the cadence sensor as I somehow managed to dislodge it on the ride home last night, despite much fiddling on the way home it wasn't until I got into the living room that I saw it had moved 1/2" down the chainstay :? Also wiped the moisture from inside the lens of the helmet cam, one screw assembly with an official Contour instruction video.

  • Well, that's phase 2 of the weekend's fettling done, the BeOne now has new cables, chain and cassette. Oh, not to mention the rather nice Arsis groupset I fitted.

I am a fettling God! Despite what I may have mentioned in the fettling muppet thread.

Stripped, cleaned and regreased brakes, cables and drivetrain, indexed gears and fitted koolstop salmons. Now I know why I have been having brake trouble, the cables were almost fused to the inners.
